believe it or not, spotting in this game is worse than my real eyes.
It does not need to be over done.

Well that's all games, no monitor or even VR can truly capture just how good the human eye is.

It's not an argument:
I made some time ago a pool: ~30% guys have some sort of Dirt -Fetish
~32% tolerates dirt on windshield, but would like to remove it
~37% hates it

2.9 will fix your spotting difficulties. It's top of the agenda. Lol 😆😆

I'm glad I've got Petro and George to see for me and of course jester . Who does a great job .

Drop your monitor resolution down to 1080p and your see targets.

Imho clearing clearing canopy would elevate overall spotting capabilities, it would not give axis or allied planes advantage over enemy so, why divert any effort to model scratches and reflections.

And my statement about reflections is that until we get true (like ray traced reflections), there is no point in doing baked reflection. It is just pure waste of time and resources.

Some modules has option to turn off those baked in reflection is more the enough proof that baked reflections are just pain in the a.. .

Real eye can focus on distant things completely blurring out things very close to eye. Ofc it can't be modeled in game it is hard to determine on what should focus should go.

I'll be honest here 2.5 brought in some weird light and shade reflections. And still remain to this day .

I mentioned this thing many times, that your screen size and your game resolution plays big role in spotting capabilities. If you have 27inch monitor and you are running 4k single pixel size is so small that you will have hard time to see it. So by having 48 inch monitor and running 1080p, this would improve spotting by a lot, because single pixel would have significant size.

Then the approach to the issue should be different than in IRL.

Yes a mod came out to tackle the spotting issues it made all contacts a 1080p pixel .

I fly 90% online in competitive servers .

This mod made a huge difference . The WWII server had 100 players the most ive seen in a long time for weeks running maybe due to new map updates or maybe due to this mod working , But As soon as the Devs realised it was passing security checks , they stop all mods running in the next patch , it took them only a  few weeks to quash that mod . .!!! ?

Yet we still wait for a proper solution years down the line . Really dont understand DCS some times .

Flying in VR is amazing and it looks great in DCS but this sim needs a good solution .

From ny understanding, DCS makes spotting (especially close range spotting and IDing much harder than it needs to be) sometimes about shaders and lighting (basically planes and colours are darker than they should be)

I fly 3 ww2 sims in VR, and the difference in how easy it is to ID a plane in a furball is extreme to say the least. In the best sim I can see the yellow noses of the German planes for probably 10 times the distance of DCS.

The canopies aren't the problem. The spitfire canopy scratches wouldn't be a problem if the planes didn't have that "stealth effect"

Totally transparent and invisible canopies look very fake though. There’s gotta be some texture or reflections.

I think its the lighting effects that 2.5 brought in . If i remember there was lots of people complaining about the Gamma and light effects as soon as 2.5 was released .

Also if you use Re-shade that makes hell of a difference in Visuals . This cleans up and makes things look sharp and crisp with good colour effects  .
