Is Multi Threading the new 'Default'? And what are the latest AA modes?

This began at the last update to the OB version (for me anyway). I noticed I was having some glitches when starting a mission, and then noticed when I was launching into DCS OB the version was being shown as multi threading. This was launching via the shortcut on my desktop, which first checks with the updater, then on into DCS. Quick workaround and point the shortcut at the main non MT version.

However, since the last stable patch this now happens in that version also?

So, have the shortcuts been set now to default to the MT exe

In addition having issues with the latest AA modes in MT. Is there a full and frank description of pros/cons of each, what works best with Nvidia or AMD etc. Away from the PC at the moment but when I flashed it up the other day got some weird hallucegenic ghosting of MFD readouts on a black screen - but cannot remember what settings were. If it happens again will take some photos to upload.

Short answer is YES.

DLSS can cause artifacts, if you’re seeing anything odd try switching it off.

You can still run ST mode of DCS by launching it off dcs.exe directly, but since ED is slowly phasing out this version anyway (as shown by the aforementioned new updater shortcut behaviour introduced with v2.9), sooner or later you'll have to get used to MT, warts and all.

As for the best upscaling and AA methods, well, simply put, all these AI-driven, "smart" technologies will always cause visual side effects (usually various forms of ghosting) as a price to pay for increased FPS. "There is no free lunch" as they say. Whether you're willing to pay this price is up to you, and hugely depends on your hardware, framerate-vs-eyecandy expectations, aircraft you fly, if you use 2D or VR etc. I, for example, as pancake user with NVidia card, skipped DLSS completely (still have sufficient performance without it), but happily adopted DLAA (ultimate shimmering killer without murdering FPS like MSAA does, at a price of some ghosting here and there - an acceptable tradeoff for me).

For this reason, I don't hink there's a single thread anywhere on the forum with full description of pros and cons of each mode, because pros and cons are different for different people. You'll just have to browse through multiple threads which popped up when 2.9 OB was first released, and/or take a look at comparison vids like the one Jabbers did (picture is worth thousand words after all).

All temporal AA create some ghosting, that includes DLSS/DLAA. But imo with some sharpening is good enough especially in VR cause it removes the shimering

Think I have nailed the above! 🤣 WIth NIS I just get an image of the monocle display (in AH) that blooms to bright green on a black background.  TAA with FSR I get no world - just dark screens with floating/ghosting instrumentation.

So this just leaves me with MSAA or DLSS. Any ideas?

Whoa, that's some psychedelic s..t right there 😄 . I don't own either Apache or AMD card so can't advise. I do recall people being not quite happy with 2.9 FSR implementation, though. Multple posts on the subject in October, scattered over bugs section, but didn't follow them much after settling with DLAA. You better search and ask around over there.

maybe i am missing something but MSAA is deprecated. it does not show in graphics options on my system.

If you select an upscaling option like DLSS or antialiasing like DLAA it will disable the use of MSAA.

You can not use them together

MSAA is under the antialiasing option

FSR is for AMD as I understand it.

Hello,

this is intended, if you are using the updater shortcut it will restart using the multithreading DCS.exe.

You can still create your own shortcuts if you wish to for the single threading DCS.exe and bypass the updater but just remember that you will need to use the updater to update 🙂

Eventually single threading DCS will be removed from DCS, so it is a good idea to use the MT DCS and let us know if you see any issues.

thank you

Personally I find MT to work very well. Getting maybe a 20fps boost from it comparing Stable 2.8 ST to 2.9 MT in heavy CPU situation like flying over Cairo. DLAA is very nice as well.

If so that explains why it doesn't work (I hope) - but then also get the same/similar on NIS (Nvidia Image Scaling) - where the only thing displayed is the instruments on a black screen as per my video.
