"Trailer Magic" is why we're getting into these discussions over and over again 😅 Trailers and screenshots are so slick and polished that many players get the wrong idea of how the Early Access will look on Day 1 of release. And if we're lucky to get an actual gameplay preview it's 90% of the time set at dusk.

I get that it is part of marketing, but It's a little bit unfair to blame players for having unrealistic expectations considering the marketing materials.

That's why I LOVE Grim Reapers previews and reviews. They just jump in and sort hamfist the DLC's without any worries about the production looking "slick". What you see is what you get.

Very good pickup. I've just gone back and looked at the Afghanistan map trailer. Doesn't appear to be any tree's popping in there either:

0:51-1:00

 

I don't have the Afghanistan map, but just wondering if anyone can confirm if tree's don't pop in like the above trailer too or not?

(Reason I ask is I'm wanting to clarify whether the Afghanistan map and Iraq map trailers are real expectations of what we can expect to achieve - and if so what settings we need to stop the tree's / shrubs from popping in).

Sounds promising, can this be applied to the Afghanistan map as pop in is awful down low in a helo.

Are you saying they pop in 'in your game', or in the Afghanistan video I posted?

I can't see them popping in on the video (unless I'm missing something) - which has me wondering what settings GA was using when he recorded the trailer video's, or if he's using a closed internal build?

It pops up in the sim when low and slow and the rendering distance is even less than it used to be for me. I am using max settings there are.

Thank you @BIGNEWY I will preorder then as this is much nicer this way so it seems Iraq is going to be nicer than Afghanistan

So your experience is different to the Afghanistan trailer video that was posted. 

That doesn't bode well for me having confidence that we won't have the same issues with Iraq then if people are having issues with Afghanistan but the Afghanistan trailer didn't have pop-ins either. Either GA is using a build for his video's we don't have access to - or it would be good to find out what settings he has so that we can replicate with our own gaming.

Of course GA is using dev build - how else would he have access to the unreleased map? He may see the same DCS settings as we do but the map may have its own internal settings, and there's no guarantee they won't change later in the development - reality check.

The Afghan trailer does not show any flying from within the cockpit of any helicopter flying low that I can find so it doesn't show the pop in that occurs.

All these trailers are very scripted in that they pick angles so that this pop in does not show up at all, my guess is that Iraq will be the same as Afghanistan as it uses the same tech

As far as the screenshots go, it seems to be better than Afghanistan, so hopefully it doesn't turn out to be like Afghanistan when it was released

I've picked the above out of a number of comments so not singling anything out.  Both trailers show a wonderous landscape and, in effect an equal quality. If anything, Id say the Afghan trailer possibly has the small shrubs removed as the tend to be everywhere and are not present in some of the CA scenes. In any case, the sea of small trees shown are not the the small bush type which plague the desert maps.  Both trailers would give the impression that the general vista are widespread yet we know from what we have on our PCs that isnt the case. Same for the mountains, though not seen in close up where, in Afghanistan they fall apart miserably, they do look equally good in both trailers. 

For now at least, I'll mark the Iraq up as  more "Trailer Magic" over any miraculous step forward and hope to be proven wrong. 

Deep down Im hoping that there is some master plan where the potential of the maps is going to be realised with developments to the game's engine somewhere down the line. If that were the case I'd be totally cool with the current state of the map. But there is no indication of that from ED at this time.

The point being - that if the Afghanistan map also didn't have pop-in's on his video - but does for the rest of us - the build might be a build we still don't have access to - not necessarily a build associated with that map. If I'm watching a trailer - I'd like to know that I can achieve the same graphics when the map is released - and not get different results because they're recorded on a special build designed for better graphics, as opposed to what we can achieve with a top end system.

I think that foliage in trailer is then based on the "trees" and not ground clutter "tech". 

Ok. I will find out myself. Preordered the whole thing now, if it turns out like Afghan then at least it is going to accommodate CSG which is already a better value for me.

Whilst I totally agree we must accept that ALL advertising involves an element of subterfuge.  The aim of promotional advertising is to build awareness of a product, increase a product's sales and boost overall revenue, to that end a certain amount of 'artistic licence' is incorporated.  I make DCS cinematic videos, in the course of 'production' I often eliminate elements that detract from the overall 'enjoyment' of the video or that break the immersion.  The only difference is that I am not selling anything...

And its a fair game. 

I wish that options in game actually reflected on the rendering of ground clutter - people who accept lower FPS or can beef up PCs, get what they ask for. At the moment it seems that terrain optimizations are enforced on all users. 

Then I thought, why we fight? If ED wants the TDK to work in specific way and offer specific visuals, our pitchforks won't affect those decisions significantly. I want ED to succeed. Despite my reservations and bitter taste of recent maps, I pre-ordered Iraq. Not even just North, but full, and whatever. If it is just the valley that looks like it does, so be it. I will fly there and destroy Scuds on that very road.

Prices are likely to go up to be honest. I am shocked of some games prices these days but still buy them.

Prices reflect the work being put into them, we feel it is fair. We do offer lots of discount at pre-purchase, early access, and then eventually in normal sales, which are often.
