Russian top brass are overjoyed with the PAK FA, the Russian fifth generation fighter that made its maiden flight recently. The chief of general staff said the machine is so good it will have “almost human intelligence.”

General Nikolay Makarov was describing to journalists the advantages of the PAK FA over its opposite number in the US Air Force, the F-22 Raptor. The Russian model is expected to be much cheaper and superior in terms of cost-to-performance ratio.

The senior officer did not elaborate on his mysterious comment, neither revealing a top secret military project for artificial intelligence nor saying that it was a metaphor to describe the aircraft’s advanced electronic equipment.

The Sukhoi PAK FA, also known as T-50, made its maiden flight on January 29 at the testing range near Komsomolsk-on-Amur. First deliveries of the aircraft to the Russian Air Force are expected between 2015 and 2017.

Yeah right, "Evil mini-skynet" is on the way... Give the journalists an elephant bone and they will make it look like it`s from a T. Rex.

Yep, CluelessKopp strikes again :)

I like how he tries to equate failure to 'risk management', or how he ignores the F-35's insane SA :)

As usual, he's pulling assumptions from where the sun don't shine.

My little sister describing Harry Potter's flying broom has come closer to reality than Mr kopp's own fantasy dillusions. :)

According to Carlo Su-35S can supercruise...I bet if Russians put a VLO paint on Su-35S it would also become 5th gen fighter which makes PAK-FA unnecessary.

Guys, invest your rubles in me instead in PAK-FA!

Even with RAM paint Su-35 can`t be 5th gen and it won`t be as stealthy as PAK-FA or F-22/F-35. It will reduce its RCS but it will never become a stealth aircraft, simply cause it is not designed with that idea.

Every major military aircraft has radar absorbing paint. Most likely even the standard Su-27 has radar absorbing paint. But by no means it reduces RCS to that point. So there is no such thing as "if russian apply LO paint". Its science fiction :)

But one should expect F-22 to have a more sophisticated paint compared to the one used on F-16s for instance ;)

The Su-35 already has a significantly reduced RCS compared to other planes of the Flanker family.

Even so it`s is not reduced enough to call it a stealth aircraft.

I know, but maybe Carlo needs a hint for his next article...

Thing is, if it was so stealthy and everything, what's the point of spending so much in the PAK-FA? It would be totally pointless, anyway...

AFAIK, the main difference between Su-35 and T-50 is the later being stealthy! Not too many weapons and avionics differences there, as we all know most of the systems to be used with PAK-FA were being tested and we can freely say shall be inherited from S/SK versions of Flanker!

PAK-FA will use more advanced avionics. Some of them might be used in some future modifications of Su-35 but definitely not all. After all Su-35 will soon be available to foreign customers and PAK-FA has just began flight testing and will be used by Russia and India only, at least in the near future. Many of its systems are to be tested in 2010-2015, including the new 1500 modules AESA radar which later may or may not be used on Su-35s. Basically the testing of different PAK-FA systems on Su-35 doesn`t necessarily mean they will be used for immediate Su-35 modernisation. I personally expect it to be much more advanced than Su-35 actually, can`t wait to see its cockpit... :) And the new HUD is also intriguing, suggesting different kind/amount of information will be projected on it.

I think i know the bias of the article even before reading it. Go for it Carlo :D !

I'm just not sure what's he going after!

Persuading US MoD to buy cheaper PAK-FA instead F-35 and F-22A, perhaps?"

AMEN!

I like russian jets a lot, but this guy is being very pessimistic about the f-35 performance. As other said before this guy wants the f-22. the f-35 has better avionics than the raptor, the raptor has a lot of performance but its avionics are 90s design, the f-35 has the advantage of being under development.
