Hello, first of all im new on this forum but have owned DCS black shark quite a while now (but haven't really gotten around to seriously learning this sim yet, so i have been doing that the last few weeks)

Theres just one thing that keeps me confused, i can fly the helicopter quite reasonably now and am practicing for combat. i can use the shkval and know how to target stuff and send a missle their way. no problem at all.

The problem that i keep having is, how do you know where something is located? i was flying somewhere and suddenly i got shot down by a missile, i watched the LWS most of the time, untill a missile was fired the lights went on. is there some kind of information thing in the cockpit itself that gives me a heads up that i am in range of an enemy target?, i just can't find the targets or know where they are (hidden on map). i'm quite confused how people do this.

PS: i have watched the training videos but find it hard to memorize everything that has been said, so i might have been missing something obvious

If anyone gets my question (might be a bit hard to understand what im trying to say), any help is greatly appreciated.

Loving the sim so far, there's no sim as cool as this one :D

Greetings,

Yuri

I am in wonderous awe of anyone who can play this sim without labels being turned on!

If you're a beginner it definitely helps to turn the labels on.

Read the briefing on where to expect enemy positions. Don't go close, even tanks can nail you with their main guns out to 2 km. Train with labels on. If you're being lased, get the heck out.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Mm, turning the labels on would help greatly, but doens't that beat the idea of extreme realism?. so what you do without labels is know where the enemy could be hiding and just go in slow and carefully?. i thought maybe the KA-50 Had some sort of super duper target finder haha.

Thanks for the help anyways though, i will see if i can practice finding targets without labels.

Welcome to modern combat.. The LWS will warn u if being lased but apart from that your eyes are the next best warning system... Tanks, radar guided missiles etc will not alarm any systems on the KA50. Mission awareness is the key, know the mission and where u are likely to come across enemy as sobek stated.. You will always come across enemy's u didn't see so don't be afraid to bug out... Stay low and use zoom if u like to spot any long range enemy's.... Avoid flying over citys and clumps of trees where enemy might be hiding.. If you see a SAM launch take it seriously ASAP even if you think it's heading for someone else..

Thanks for the tips, just the eyes and shkval then, should be fun aswell. just tried going over a mountain but somehow my rotor blade broke, over revved it on the last bit over :(, flying in mountains at altitudes of 4000 or so gets harder with the KA-50.

Divide your Ingress into 'Stages'. Only fly from Point A to Point B if you are 100% satisfied that it is Threat-Free. And how do you ascertain that?

Use your Eyes/Shkval to ID units and sort accordingly. And yeah....Head out of the Cockpit in a High-Threat environment. It will come to you - all it takes is Flight-Hours :)

If it helps you training, it's a good thing. Just don't get too comfy with labels on ;)

It does have that, it's called the MK I Eyball ;)

I also use the waypoints and the target list from the briefing both of which can displayed on the ABRIS map. The programmed targets will give you a good idea where you should be looking. That's not to say you can fly blindly along the route, you still have to keep an eye out for other threats.

When practicing, I sometimes pause and look around with the outside views to whats going on. I think it's better than using labels since labels destroy my immersion.

Mapping out the battle area is critical I thinks, in the mind as well as in the Abris so as to have an idea of where it's safe to go (this process continues throughout the mission for me). If I (or a wingman) fly over "uncharted" territory, I use preemptive flaring and make sure I/him has overwatch if possible.

it takes PATIENCE...

things you should get used to doing are..

a) like the guy said, read briefing to get an idea of the area to expect targets.

b) zoom in to the HUD so that you can spot the little black dots

c) fly forward slow and scan your sector.. hover as necessary to use Shkval to scan sector..use terrain also or cover while scanning

d) take your time.. its about staying alive rather than to do quake...

i came out of the battlefield2 world, and my impatient-ness to engage brings me to more and many startup procedures...

bonus: fly with a squad.. TS, a plus..

Absolutely, you work like a sniper. I once took out an entire battallion of friendlies who were just waiting for me to attack a town. I cleaned them AND the town. Felt bad... it has been said before but specially for a helo in CAS, you really need a FAC or at least ground comms. On another mission it would have saved my life to know that Apaches were nearby...

Pretty new to the game and flight sims, had it about 2 weeks so know what you mean. I find that pushing R while following the waypoints when you're at your desired speed and height helps, you can zoom in and scan horizon and use shkval easier while the machine is flying the route for you.

Also if you're playing the campaigns missions, you usually seem to get a wingman or 3 (i have only played through first campaign though, not sure of the rest), sending them our in recce mode fairly regularly along your line of travel seems good because they will report back hostiles, or atleast get shot down so you know to be extra vigilent.

Most trouble I get is from enemy helicopters, can't see em, can't target them and defaintely can't shoot them,....might come with practise I guess but for now if wingman says bandits I do a 180 and go hide :)

Oh yeah, and reading the briefings properly is real helpful, the pictures usually show targets and threats as viewed from the ingress point.

^^ excellent advice Typhon ...

THe KA50 is the only attack heli in the world that is Single Seated, and as a result, the pilot NEEDS to use the tools he has (such as route AP mode) to allow him a chance at having battlefield SA instead of beeing totally focus'd on keeping the bird in the air.

I think too many of us fly manual, as it fels a bit like "cheating" to use Route mode, whereas , in reality, it may mean the difference between life and death in a hostile environment.

Your right, if you can choose between getting shot down because youre too busy with the chopper instead of just doing it the safe way and focusing on combat, i think the choice is simple.

Im getting the hang of this sim more and more, and getting better with the shkval too!, gotta love helmet mounted sight + trackir ;)

Thanks for the help everyone, this forum is great.
