Well, all we know for sure is that on the day we finally get DCS: Fast Mover, alot of people are going to do this to their A-10s:

(Me included. How can one have a call sign like "Speed" and fly an A-10? I'm a flying oxymoron :()

Any chance we could stop this "kiddie" game and actually just tell us what the aircraft is?

Honestly, this is one of the most ridiculous jokes I have ever seen...a press release saying that a developer wants to work with a community, yet won't even explain what the next product is.

It is obvious that DCS knows, so if you care about your community, say what the next American fixed-wing aircraft is. All you do by withholding this information is make people angry and frustrated!

You'll know when it's announced. There's no kiddie game, just the inability to understand 'it's announced on ED's schedule, period'.

Well, if that is true, then why state how you want to work with a community, but then refuse to give out the information that the entire community would like to know?

Are you saying that is not hypocritical? Anyone who has an "It is done when I/we say so" is going to alienate people. You cannot have it both ways, whichever is convenient for you at that moment. If they do care of the community, then it seems highly counter-productive to keep this game continuing...and it is a game that is being played.

What possible harm could it do to say "We are working on "X" plane"? Instead, we get information saying that a game will be released 1st half of 2012, and the other game is being done concurrently, so that obviously means they are working on it now. I see no way that could be harmful, yet it would be very helpful to just say F/A-18C (or whatever it ends up being).

I'm not trying to jump down your throat, but this thread was started fairly close to 2 years ago. Is not that a ridiculously long time to keep people waiting. No one is demanding a release date, but almost 2 years of "Why should we bother to speak about it" shows a real lack of respect to the consumer/gamer.

That is not ED not working with the community. That is your pet peeve. ED has their reasons, some of which have been mentioned in this thread, some of which you are not privy to. There's really nothing more to this.

how dare you question the all knowing ED, sounds like a power trip to me "I know something you don't know :P "

I agree, if they know what they are developing then they should just say it. I know this is going to bring on the flames from the brown nosers and ED "testers" but besides the complaining from those that don't like the plane they've chosen I think it would be good for the community.

P.S.

I know if i don't like it, don't buy it and/or participate in the forums.

put it this way.

ED says its the F/A-18C then a few months later they hit a wall and it's gonna be another airframe.

The way they are doing this by keeping stoom is a better way. IMHO

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

it would be very helpful to just say F/A-18C (or whatever it ends up being).

I don't actually think it would be. Announcing the airframe only gives you a small indication of what you'll be able to do. For example if they say they're doing a Hornet variant, immediate (and important) questions will be: will there be carrier ops? will it have HARMs? if it's going to have HARMs does that mean there'll be an IADS? will it have AMRAAMs? if so will air-to-air combat be a major focus? etc. etc. Lots of things that can't be answered until it's actually implemented and working.

Right now, there's only one question: "what's the next aircraft going to be?" If they announce the aircraft, they replace that with hundreds of questions that they definitely can't answer yet.

History shows that if ED were to say "we hope to have carrier launches + landings" many people read it as "we absolutely promise the most detailed simulation of carrier operations ever in a computer game" and get very upset when they don't get what they think they were promised.

That's not necessarily the fault of the person misinterpreting the statement, either. We all have our own ideas of the particular features we'd like to see in the sim, and so there's a natural tendency to assume ED will have the same desires (as well as the ability to implement them). So I'd rather they delay announcing the aircraft until they can also announce the actual game features.

There's also the possibility that they're not allowed to announce what it is until after some set date, or after completion of works for their "sponsor", or what-have-you. And there's also the possibility they're not allowed to publish any details of their contracts, no matter how trivial... :music_whistling:

Erm, that very announcement not only says what the next product is, it mentions the next 4 products. The specific DCS Legends aircraft has not yet been realeased but Nevada, Combined Ops, and FC3 have all been announced. What else do you want?

But even ignoring the above, why on earth should ED/TFC tell you what products they are planning a year in advance? Do you go banging on the door of every other company you purchase products from demanding to know what they are working on?

Honestly the unjustified sense of entitlement expressed by some in this community astounds me.

I will say it's sort of annoying not knowing even a timeframe of when we *could* know.

The thing is, the information isn't being withheld for the fun of it. It's likely being withheld because there is no solid information to give.

As A16 said, not even the test team know what the 'fixed wing fighter' will be. And the chances are you won't see it until late 2012 at the earliest imo.

And here's food for thought for all the moaners out there, did you ever stop to consider that perhaps the ED team are working on more than one DCS aircraft and that maybe at this point they can't be sure which will be the next module. I'm not saying this is the case, as has been said, we don't know any more than anyone else in this case. But much like A-10C was originally PLANNED to be A-10A, things change and ED would rather wait until they can provide information that is as close to definate as can be.

There are many reasons not to release information to the public regarding WiP projects. None of those reasons involve ego boosting or playing games.

Working on several aircraft at once, With none of them garaunteed to be released seems extremely risky with the possibility of wasting all your hard work when it turns out you cant release said aircraft. It worries me if they dont have a definite idea of which aircraft they are working on.

That is rather unlikely. What i think could be a plausible scenario is that they have secured another contract with the military but the specifics have not been sorted out, e.g. As long as any major things about the project are not laid out perfectly, it would be unprofessional of ED to make an announcement.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

What's the old saying? Give the customer what they want? :) I appreciate all the hard work though. Future I hope is bright.

I am so looking forward to DCS Fighter. (Broken Record mode on) Personally, I don't want FC3 and the same planes with the avionics modelled pretty much with the same detail from 2003 (Broken Record mode off). I know however, there are many great improvements in FC2 and I bet there will be in FC3.

But who else does things like this? You dont see other game developers saying "we're working on something, but we're not going to tell you what it is, or when it's going to be released". I would think that announcing the next DCS aircraft would generate quite a bit of buzz around ED and the DCS-series. At least more than yet another version of Flaming Cliffs, a paid Black Shark update, and another aircraft that they wont tell anyone what is... I just think this is a weird way of doing business, another DCS-aircraft will probably attract more people to the series (especially if its a popular aircraft like the Hornet) and they might even check out Warthog and Black Shark while they are waiting, a new Flaming Cliffs version wont...
