Or get both?!

Well here is my current preference/experience. I have FSX, FalconAF and FF5, IL2 UP2.0n, and of course DCS BS. I have LockOn MAC, but have not installed it on my current hardware (i7950, GTX295, 12gb ram, Vista U, TrackIR 4+) as I really did not get into LOMAC on my old hardware, as it was kind of slow, and did not have clickable cockpits for all the modern aircraft controls.

Since DCS BS, I am a huge fan and spoiled by the high fidelity cockpit experience. FalconAF also has it, even if I have to switch to the 2D to click switches and buttons (though FF5 has 3D clickable), as well as FSX, though FSX is kind of squirrelly and I rarely fly it. IL2 UP2.0 is great even if I can not click anything, in the WWII planes there are not many key combos to remember since the planes are "easy to fly" without all the electronics of modern aircraft. UP2.0n also have 6DOF which is really nice.

So, along comes FC2.0. I am tempted to get it, but am wondering if I will be disappointed since I will I need to learn a bunch of key combos, and cannot click switches/buttons onscreen? The visuals look awesome, but I get a similar experience in DCS BS and IL2 UP2.0n.

Note, I am definitely getting DCS A-10C as soon as it is available! However, for the "spoiled" simmer from all the 6DOF, clickable pit sims out there, should I get FC2.0 as well? Is learning all the key combos worth it?

If you can tolerate the evil abomination of Il-2, you'd probably like FC 2, just a guess :)

Lomac FC2 is a delight. I'd unreservedly recommend it. Personally, I think it has just the right systems immersion - you can concentrate on flying the aircraft and managing weapons employment without the overhead of having to learn systems & subsystems. LOMAC remains a platform where I can go away for six months, spend an hour coming back, and be back in the groove.

Easy to learn, difficult to master. Perfect in my eyes.

Have you downloaded all three files? There's the setup, the 300ish mb one, and the 1.8GB one.

FC2 downloaded and installed with no issues for me, without having to insert the LOMAC disk or point it to the directory.....not sure why the problem for Peter....maybe LOMAC is not installed in the default directory?

I'm so with you.

I'm a big fan of 3D clickable (realistic) cockpits to the point where anything otherwise would feel like a "game". To each their own, but I like flying simulators, not games.

So I'll be the one who doesn't jump on the FC2 bandwagon (nothing against it, it just doesn't offer what DCS does).

I'm waiting for the A-10 & equally have no regrets for not getting FC2.

Flamming Cliffs is plenty simulator for you if you are at all interested in trying to realistically engage in air to air combat. The lack of buttons to push doesn't change that. The important parts of air to air combat are all there, if you want to explore them. How you actually fight and employ your aircraft is the focus, not how you operate a piece of machinery. The machinery is incindental.

Posted

Peter22, you need all three files in the same directory, not just the setup.exe

Flaming Cliffs 2 is definitely worth the money. The eye candy is worth it. The realism improvements are worth it. Being able to play online with everyone else is also worth it (not many of the larger servers will bother with FC1.12 for much longer I think, since FC2 is a significant improvement).

I couldn't wait... Just downloading FC2 :) It's been a while and I cannot wait to try it again. I don't miss a clickable cockpit at all. For me clicking on all the buttons with a mouse while in an air to air engagement would lead me to quick and certain death :P I'd rather assign all important functions to my hotas system anyway.

I now my slogan gets old....

but everybody that loves the simgenre and is able to spend some money, should buy FC2 just to support ED and the future of sims. :smartass:

Obviously my suggestion is: go for FC2!

Otoh I'm not a bombtruck-driver, so DCS:A-10 in the pipe doesn't get me excited at all. ;)

I ordered a copy of LO:MAC, waiting for it to come in. Then getting the FC2 next week hopefully. Also DCS A-10 when it comes out hehe. I have Blackshark already.

Even though I have had some issues getting FC2 to run on my computer I recommend this SIM 1000 times over IL-2! Buy it, if you love SIM’s you won’t regret it.

FC2 might not be a full on hardcore sim because it lacks high fidelity of systems and clickable cockpit (like DCS Ka-50) but in terms of air combat it does a job pretty good and for that reason only I find it very much worth it... also to support the developers so they keep making future DCS modules there you have a second good reason to get it ;)
