411kaplan Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 hi,shaggy.how do you do these(from up) pictures? thx!
shaggy Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 (edited) Well I usually start out with a screenshot from a simulator. In this case 2 separate screenshots from FSX. Then I use teh pen tool in photoshop to cut out the aircraft from teh screenshot. When I have done this with both teh screenshots "planes" I search for a suitable background to fit the scene. Sometimes I use up to 3 separate real images and merge them together into making the background. After im satisfied with the BG and plane cutouts, I start on the global lightning. It´s easy to find good image resources on the net, but not easy to find images with the same angle on the lightning as in your screenshots. So you need to correct this to make everything look correct. How I fixed it in the tornado picture above can be seen in the bottom left corner. There you will see a truck casting a shadow on the ground, in the same angle as the plane wings casts shadows on the fuselage and fuel tanks. This is just a small detail that makes the whole image fit together. So when the lightning is done you need to focus on the shadowing. You can go pretty far with these as military planes usually has allot that casts shadows... Antennas, Weapons etc.. When this is done I focus on the weathering and plane graphics, not fun to have 2 planes looking identical, so I usually just go over the planes a little different with the burn tool to add weathering here and there. To get a much bigger weathering effect you can also go to blending mode and add a pattern filter. In the tornado edit I added a cloud filter, switched the blending mode to soft light and reduced the opacity. that way I got some areas brighter then other, making the plane look a little more dirty and weathered. I always say there is a million and one ways to do things in photoshop. What I just explained im sure another person would do differently. Its the way I choose to work in PS ;) it takes some time to get used to the tools and menus, as with any computer program, but when you are comfortable and used to it there isent much to it really :) Im happy you all like my work and I will continue to post stuff here.
