EDIT: Ive answered my own question, you set the freq for the JTAC to more than 300MHz in the mission editor. then you can use the UHF radio.

Tom

For future reference, here are the frequencies ranges for the radios:

VHF-FM 30.000 MHz - 87.975 MHz

VHF-AM 108.000 MHz - 151.975 MHz

UHF-AM 225.000 MHz - 399.975 MHz

So setting the JTAC frequency to anything from 225.000 through 399.975 will put him on the UHF radio.

Thanks for that, I did try a quick scenario with JTAC on 300MHz and strangly I could contact him what ever freq the UHF radio was tuned to, when calling up the radio menu it correctly showed his freq as 300MHz but my radio was set to 225Mhz (Manual tune not preset)

Possible bug?

Wouldn't in-game voice be interesting! Not something I'd want ED to put effort into, but an interesting concept none the less.

Is anyone working on something like this for the DCS Series? ACRE v1.0 - Advanced Combat Radio Environment - Official Thread (ArmA2 to TS3 Plugin)

The Readers Digest Condensed version of what it does:

It allows for realistic radio communications between players using ingame radio objects and Teamspeak 3. Broadcast distance is determined by several factors such as distance between radio stations, terrain, or objects (ie Buildings) between stations, and power output and frequency of selected radios.

Everyone remains in the same Teamspeak Channel, and depending on the ingame radio settings you have you are able to communicate with only the people on the same frequency. If you change frequency, or select a different radio, then you can communicate with a different set of people.

I hope the radios and ATC is gonna be functional in multiplayer. Like if multiple players are all tuned to the tower, they will be able to hear each other's requests for TO/landing over the radio, and the tower will direct people to hold short or whatever if need be. This could also reduce accidents compared to if the airport is just a free-for-all!

You could also have everyone join Ventrilo or Team Speak and designate one person to act as air traffic controller over vent channel XD

The "Easy Communication" Option in the Gameplay Options allows this to work. The bug is that the effect is backwards from intended. If you have "Easy Communication" selected, you have to manually ensure that your frequencies are set properly. If "Easy Communication" is NOT selected, the radios will "auto-tune" to the proper frequency of the intended recipient. This issue has already been resolved, but not in time for the current version of the Open Beta.

Sorry if this is a bit out of topic, but my question si quite about radio too:

How can we know the frequencies to use for communication with tower of the airports, how can we know the frequencies for ILS landings.

Ii've read the manual it says need to adjust frequency with two switches and the frequency is 3 digits but you can only change the tens and hundreds, and X or Y.

this sounds so weird to me, even if I know what button to turn, I don't understand what value to choose ?

Any help very appreciated.

also sorry if my question is about something not actually working in the beta or not mentionnend in the beta manual

You can check ATC frequencies in the map view (F10) - just click on the selected airport and you will see some basic info (including ATC freq.).

Thanks for the tip with the F10 view!

Do you have any idea regrding the frequencies for ILS landing ?

From manual p462:

"The ILS operates between 108.1 and 111.95 MHz and has 40 possible channels selected from the ILS control panel.

Select ILS Frequency

1. On the ILS Control Panel, use the left and right dials to set the frequency of the ILS station you wish to receive from."

"TACANs and ILSs in the game

 Batumi. Runway 14 ILS channel 38Y (110.15 Mhz). TACAN 16X "BTM"

 Senaki. Runway 09 ILS channel 26X (108.90 Mhz). TACAN 31X "TSK"

 Kobuleti. Runway 07 ILS channel 40X (110.30 Mhz). TACAN 67X "KBL"

 Kopitnaryi. Runway 07 ILS channel 34Y (109.75 Mhz). TACAN 44X "KTS""

How to get the list of all tacan frequencies in the game?

IVC is an absolute must for hardcore. Falcon OF has it and it adds so much to the emersion aspect. I was really disapppointed Ed didn't incorporate ivc. They could have quite easily used ts3 SDK for this, which would have completed the sim IMHO.

I've noticed that when I select "Available ATCs" in the \ menu, it shows the freq next to each field. Also, once you communicate with that field, it does currently autotune.

It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

There was already an experimental Mumble IVC connection for DCS:BS. In-game voice is a HUGELY NECESSARY feature but asking the 1st party devs to make it from scratch is a bit of a waste of time. If ED programmed a lovely TS3 and/or Mumble (or whatever else programs are capable of all that fancy pants stuff) it should save them tons of effort and produce a better end result.

VOIP over DCS has always been discussed, and I think will never happen cause when you connect a public server, how many often do you join the TS channel if there's one?

In Arma2 there is VOIP through the game, and noone uses it to save bandwith and framerate on the server.

I think it's waste of time, where we surely need a dedicated server instead (but that's not the subject here)

A dev group has developed a TS3 plugin for Arma 2 called ACRE which is absolutely incredible. It models terrain masking, different radios, frequencies, ranges and modes. Something like this really needs to happen for DCS, we just need the right people with the know-how.

IVC is desirable from what I have seen in OF, but not a deal breaker for mois.

I would think that no one uses ArmA's VON because it's dreadfully inflexible.

Exactly, a more sophisticated ACRE for DCS, one that automatically makes your program join the voice server based on information supplied through the MP session details. Automatic and painless.

Does ILS even work? I'm trying to set the kHz frequency using the right knob, but unlike the left knob, I cannot select the base part with mouse to control the kHz section -- it only controls the volume :S

+1 for an ACRE like mod for DCS A-10C!

Yes, I did an ILS approach into Kobuleti the other night plus several touch and goes. The set up of the radios takes a bit of getting used to, but you should be able to do it. Check that you are getting the decimal point in the correct place on the ILS panel and that you have it powered.

How come there is only one set of ILS beacons per airfield? Is there a reason for this? You'd think there would be one at either end of the runway?...

I have been having problems with the radios as well, but I realized that I was forgetting the Mic Switch functionality that is modeled in this sim.

Now the use of the Mic Switch has not fixed all my radio problems, but im pretty sure it plays a part, and should be used.
