astrospud Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 IMO the reason why a A-10 pilot wouldn't want to play this game is because it's work. I'm sure bank tellers wouldn't want to play a bank teller simulator. ;) I don't personally know any pilots, but if my addiction to aviation is anything to go by, I imagine that they love their jobs. Work or not work, it's cool factor is obvious, as anyone here is trying "to get a piece of the action" via simulation. I have no doubt that a RL hog pilot would give it a crack, at least once... Moa Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 At VNAO they have a retired US Navy instructor "Pop" with around 10,000 flight hours. Loves flying this sim and others too. Once it is in your blood I suppose it is hard to get out. I would not be surprised if A-10C pilots give it a go if they find out about it (not that they can always comment on some things).

Probably like a group I fly with on occasion in FSX. Am sure some of you have encountered the same type of individuals. I've been with bush pilots, commercial airliine pilots, retired civilian and military pilots. We have one fellow in our group that flew the Thud (Is that the F-105?) and another that was in B-52's. Another that flew for the government carrying sub type cabinet members all over the USA and North America. Many of these are well beyond their years and can't pass a flight physical to get up in a Cessna, so they take on where they were 10-20 or more years earlier. We probably have a hog driver among us. But I know that if it was me, I would stay on the quiet side. You can imagine how many questions we would have for him. We would drive him nuts. Someday one will surface "To most people, the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home."-----anonymous

Scout Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I was a F-16 Crew Chief for 6 years, I was stationed at Shaw AFB, SC for 3 and I was at Eielson AFB for the last 3. While at Eielson, I worked in the phase dock and the A-10 phase shared the hangar with us. I haven't never crewed them on a daily basis, but I've assisted with many phase inspections (against my will LOL) It was a very cool ACFT but it can very a big pain in the ass sometimes. Especially on de-panel and panel up day. SKULLBANGER Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Re: Looking for an A-10 pilot? I spoke with several of my squadron's A-10 pilots today about the game and downloaded and showed them the manual. We are all VERY impressed with the realism of the C-Model Warthog game from DCS. It should come as no surprise though since they already have developed and built our HOTAS trainer for the C-Model. It is spot on and the realism is beyond what you might expect. Enjoy the game! I can answer many questions but will not go into anything classified at all. I fly in this game as SKULL01 and my wingman is SKULL02 See you all over the battlefield! 1

BBall Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Also BBall and some of the commuter driver crowd (Flim?). BBall is one wild and crazy guy: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3115890/Crosswind_Landings.html#Post3115890 LOL... Crazy is as crazy does Forrest. Actually, I was once asked by the evening news lady while our LAN group in MSP was being interviewed, why I "do flight simulations" when I fly for a living. The obvious answer was that when I'm at work, I don't get to blow stuff up, fly inverted under the railroad bridge, and "get tone" on other airliners! Seriously though, over the years, the RL pilots I've turned on to flight sims have all loved them. Before he moved away, our LAN group was proud to have Lloyd "Bozo" Abel as one of our members. Bozo is a good friend of mine (we were roomies when I was based in Boston flying the DC-10), and he's most famous for doing a lot of the F-14 Tomcat flying in the movie "Top Gun". Super guy, flew Jane's F/A-18 with us and loved it. I was flying a trip a few years ago with an ex-Hawg driver, so I fired up my laptop to demo LO:MAC to him. When the loading splash screen came up, he announced that he had flown that very machine! LOL...go figure. I showed him the sim, and he thought it was "cool". I obviously didn't have any sort of HOTAS gear with me on the road, so he didn't get a chance to do any flying, but nonetheless, he liked what he saw. Not sure why more "RL" pilot types aren't into flight sims. Probably the time involved, the expense (PLEASE don't tell my wife about me asking Santa for a new "Warthog" HOTAS for Christmas), and the like. I would guess that, as much as nearly every pilot I've ever met is (at heart) just a kid that never grew up, I'm thinking that if you plop them down in front of a screaming gaming machine, let them caress a nice HOTAS (wait, that didn't sound right)... they'd be in heaven. Have a great day all! BBall 1
Rusty_M Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Hey lay off us bank Tellers!:D I think i'd rather be some sort of pilot, but that's easier said than done :pilotfly: Some people love their job and I suppose simulating aspects of it is fun for them. In the same way many musicians enjoy playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero! I suppose if RL Hog pilots like this sim, that's one hell of a seal of approval! The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming
czarnyolek Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 There was RL Mig-29 pilot on polish LO forum. And guess what, he got something like few dozens of questions from other people every day. No wonder RL pilots refuse to come out ;)
jctrnacty Posted October 23, 2010 Author Posted October 23, 2010 OK Ok question for skullbanger :-) I just wanna know if the startup sequence in DCS is 10 % or 50% or 90% realistic ? And what about the weapons checklists if you compare them to real life counterpart? isoul Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I was thinking... A real A-10 pilot leaves his airbase in his car to go home and relax... playing DCS: A-10C..! That would sound ... at least weird to me! He has a real one at work, why bothering flying a simulator of the exact same aircraft he flies at work? Do you believe a bus driver would play Bus Simulator? I doubt that. Seriously... A few years ago... when Falcon 4.0 AF was one of the best (and the few) simulators out there I was talking with an active F-16 pilot. I told him that there is a PC simulator about the aircraft he is flying and he was amazed that some people are willing to get used to procedures etc etc needed to fly an F-16 but he never sounded interested to evaluate the game at home. He mentioned that even the Lockheed Martin military simulator doesn't make you feel the same as when you are up in the sky in real or practice missions! I believe that real pilots already know the feeling and wont change that for a PC simulator. Maybe someone who is willing to evaluate how close the simulator is to the real stuff but not to consume his spare time with the same stuff he does at work!
mvsgas Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 just out of interest, how does one become a crew chief? or more likely why? im sure it is a very interesting job, and very important too, but i would cry bloody tears every time i saw someone take off knowing that i'll never fly one :( for me, it would be a torture! being so close, but still so far. Like any other military job, ether you choose to be one or they tell you your are going to be one. To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..

bumfire Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Yes Viper, it was lock on and back when I was stationed in Alaska. Weather you believe me or not I really don't care. The 16 pilot I knew got out of the AF and went to fly at Tuscon. The A-10 guy stayed up there and I don't know where he is at now, but I can find out if he is still in. They both only flew it a few times, since enlisted and officers aren't suppose to hung out together. So go ahead and have a good chuckle, remember this was lock on 1.01-1.02. Me in Alaska, after 9-11 Haven't flown in a hog, but I did give the Viper a try You lucky man Cali, getting to work with all those boys toys would be a dream job ;)
