Long Time Flight Simmer's Review of DCS: A10C

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have been a long time flight simmer. I have flown everything from the first Falcon on a black white screen to the entire Jane's series. The entire Flanker series and so forth. I have flown IL2 since its very first release and was a founding member of a very large IL2 Community. I was the first guy to drop an A10 model into the hacked version of Jane's F18. Worked with a great bunch of guys but without change to the flight model it was kind of a bust. I guess what I am saying is I LOVE FLIGHT Sims. I really love Military Flight Sims. I have flown some civilian stuff, but Military has been my niche. I mean what good is it to fly around when you can't blow stuff up. I have taken a long break from simming just returning less then 6 months ago. My job was a pain, and I had a severe illness that required my attention.

On that note! I am a ground pounder. In IL2 I love the P47 and fly it when ever I boot that sim. The A10 is right up my alley and have come to love it more with the Lomac series. I have them all including Black Shark.

To get down to it! I am really growing fond of the new DCS A10C. The graphics are a tad better then FC2, even though it's still a beta. There are some glitches, and missing items, once again, I read the forum, I know....it's a beta. Things in my opinion are off, roll rate, Mav locks, and what not. ....I know it's a beta! Overall fellas I am giving you a total thumbs up on the sim. You need to refer to the manual a lot, then you must use a lot of practical application to get it down. This is not a read the book and then fly perfect sim, it takes practice, and in that is where this sim is so rewarding. The longevity of the sim out paces the user. I downloaded the beta and after a lot of reading, configuring, practicing, and upgrading my Hardware...get into that in a minute, the sim is a total Win! Adapting to the more sophisticated systems and weapon sights was fairly quick, and very satisfying. Nothing like running a ribbon of 30 mm on a column of BMP's. The recoil really is nice when applying a strip of rounds. Starting up is great! It's one of the reason I bought this sim. There is nothing like sitting in the cockpit and bringing that beast to life. The startup procedure alone was worth the price of the sim. Landing and shutdown are right up there with is the startup. So far I haven't got into communication systems do to it's beta form. I have been spending time on weapons and emergency situations.

In the quick start menu this weekend I loaded up the first one and headed out to do some damage. Took out my targets and headed for a bridge to take out. There are two ZSu's and a SAM site at this target. I had my wingy go for the SAM, I figured he would be better then me with not a lot of time in the sim. He takes two SAM hits and misses the target. I got my ZSU's. One with a MAV and the other with guns, but when I turned out from the second ZSU the SAM tagged me. Blew a chunk out of my left rear Stab, and the rudder of the right one. It also took out about 2 feet of my right wing tip and my left engine. Left engine was on fire so I shut down fuel to left engine, shut down left engine and hit the Fire Ext. It all worked great. Once the fire was out, I trimmed the aircraft and looked for a parking space. Flew it 30 ks or so to the nearest runway and put her on the tarmac. It was one of the most, if not the most remembered moment I have ever had flight simming. I was in a total sweat and getting her on the ground was just so rewarding. Total Thumbs up fellas!

I have changed my video card and ordered more ram. I started with a lower end ATI video card and with all the tweaking I was squeezing maybe 15 average in just normal flight. ATI Cards seem to have a problem. I hope it works out for final release. I purchased a Nvidia card this week. GTS450 w/1GB of DDR5. It reall smokes. I have been playing full settings. I love the HDR. It does have some Vaseline moments but overall it looks good. I should have my new RAM today and looking forward to some better load times and stutter fixes. ATI builds a good card but I think the Nvidia really works with the developers. ATI seems a bit recluse. Who knows, it s a Chevy Ford argument. I am running a DUO Core ES5400 2.7 processor, overclocked to 3.7. It runs the sim awesome with no overheating issues. The sim runs fairly well on 2 gigs of ram but I would suggest going to 4. You will see better load times with terrain texture when climbing or descending quickly. I am sure a lot of that will clean up with optimizing.

All in All ED I am very pleased with the Sim and if you are a flight sim junkie like me, it's a must! Waiting on the next Beta release but it's headed in the right direction. The learning curve is steep and it takes a lot of "in-game" to master, but hell that's why were all here isn't it?

Pssst.... If the thing you are reviewing is not yet released, it's called "preview" ;)

You are correct Sir! I will change that! :smilewink:

Nice one Greb i enjoyed reading that. As a long time flight simmer myself i have to say this sim is really doing it for me. Just wish i had more time though to get my teeth into it. What with a full time job kids and wife who works full time i can just about get an hour a day if i am lucky. As for the weekends well lets just say the grass is getting long in the yard :)

I am thinking of a review once it's released. Exactly who may care is the question...LOL. Last review I did on the net was for LOMAC circa 2005.

Oh yeah Mule! I don't have the kids but my wife has me busy. I usually fly at night after 8 or so. I may get one in early before the house wakes up. Friday night this last week I was up until 3 am, and Saturday I crashed at 5 am. I had to force myself to quit. Very immersible!

Do it Mower! I'll read it for sure.

Online is next for me. Haven't done any online flying in quite a long time. IL2 and Flanker Gunfights. This sim really has great potential for online squad flying. Don't know what is implemented or whats to come but a Controller in Online would be nice. Meaning having a squad or several aircraft's flying online and one guy controlling airfield and combat. He would be the Man behind the curtain so to speak. He would be ground forces and throw up obstacles.

Gonna be a fun winter!

Greb, nice feedback there. I think you hit the nail on the head - the reward of mastering a piece of sim like this is very addictive.

I hope some of the guys at ED catches your preview here :)

Online is next for me.

Really enjoying the DCS A10C online play, even in beta.

Have tried a few servers, including our own at the 1 VFW and (dont tell them...LOL) over at 16th ACCW.

It is a review of a beta, which obviously has been released. XD Man some of you guys are picky up in here. LOL.

But he is previewing a product which has been released. If you reeeealy wanna be technical, it's a review of a beta preview of the final release.

at any rate, good review, makes me wanna hit my wife up (no I'm not a wife beater, it's an expression) for a new computer that might have a chance of running this. Still on fc1.12 sadly, focusing on form flying.

Greb,

Nice, concise overview. I hope a lot of people find there way to it and that it helps more consider jumping into the DCS A-10C.

There is a 'first bra strap' fumbling moment. Sweaty anticipation, a pause, then..a massive explosion in the tgp. Bullseye. Rounds on target.

Can't be beat.

Great reading Greb. :thumbup::thumbup:

You hit it Bullseye. I am also a long time simmer and a profesional pilot for living and I am experiencing the same feelings than you do about this sim.

I suggest you get the new TM HOTAS Warthog to get the "full experience" and lets start really enjoying serious simulation!!!!!! (beta or not)

Just the awesome manual it is worth the price of the sim, let alone configuring your own weapons profiles or managing your CDU.

Simply awesome!!

Was very nice reading your "preview"

I often forget it's in beta form, I'm reminded whenever I watch a training video on youtube users post. THey are quite helpful, Tyger's steps on the maverick have made me an expert marksman with them and there's another guy out there who did the trim/multi target jdam vids who's also great.

Anyway back on topic I guess...

Nice post Greb, I too had taken quite a few years off from simming (1999-2006) simply because I went mac for work and flight sim titles were spares. Since intel joined the picture I was able to come back...at a no better time mind you with the pending release of Black Shark. I got Black Shark, LOMAC and IL-2 inside of 2 weeks, new HOTAS and tracker IR as well. Needless to say I spent the next couple of months "catching up" from my Janes days ;). Surprised how much i retained.

Thanks for all the reply's fellas!

Panzertard!

Yeah I hope they read it. It would be nice to know your work is appreciated. I mean it's a paying job, but as someone that has been modding on stuff since EA F1. It's a labor of love for sure.

Furia!

Yeah I would love to have that new Hotas, but I need to nail down a Trackir. I keep saying out loud I don't need that Hog Hotas, but my inner voice is running the numbers on how to snag it without winding up divorced...although sometimes I think the Hotas would be more enjoyable! LOL!!! .......(Greb looks over shoulder checking for wife)

Element!

Same here! I was really surprised to find how much I kept in my head. The hard thing for me now is playing FC2. After spending hours in the A10C flying FC2 is almost comical. I find myself taking naps between waypoints! WAKE me when the shooting starts! The A10C is fun because you are always doing something. You have to get organized before you get on target. Very rewarding!

I just flew over groom lake today..no bs. I'm sitting in a 5star vegas hotel.. I just read this post and and it made me SO fing sad I can't even convey. I drank free scotch for two hours and now it's counteracted by this post... !? Dude.. counseling.. really. Red flashing lights. Danger Will Robenson. Danger... Sweet funky Moses that killed my buzz......!!!!

It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

Hey Spectre!

Good to see you again! How are the pigs? I've been meaning to call Wing'N but its been a long time. Yeah I got real sick in 06' and almost croaked. Thought about you guys from time to time. Life has a funny way of dragging you of in weird directions. I have done a couple of huge Bike Runs these past couple of years. God knows I love me Harley's!

Sorry to here about that. I used to love reading your stuff!

Dimebag!

You sound like a working stiff like myself. I would love to chuck down 3 grand or so and build a nice end machine. I usually buy and build to the needs of my most demanding sim. Buy it in steps bro'! Buy the CPU and board put it together, next month grab a video card, and so on. You don't need 8 gigs of Ram or the highest end CPU. Buy what ya need not what looks good on your forum sig. Shop around! If you want to get it done, you'll find away and be patient ....you got time!
