I right now am using a very old headset that went with my PS2, and the padding on the one side of the headphone is gone. So it's ancient. But what are some good reccomendations for a cheap but great quality headset/mic to use with teamspeak 3?

I've found a Sennheiser PC 26 USB Single-Sided Monaural Headset with Microphone

and Logitech PlayStation 3 Vantage USB Headset

Well if as me you can t afford to play on speaker, consider a 5.1 headset with mic.

Zalmann has a good one but the mic system sucks.

I m seeking some headset mic witohut speaker but its really hard, if not impossible to find. Headset + far away mic= Screaming, so its a no go.

Depends on your budget, to be honest. I use a Razer Piranha which I am very happy with for it's price point (~60 dollars plus VAT, if applicable), though it is slightly uncomfortable if you end up using it for 8 hours straight.

That boom mic-only rig is one I have recommended in the past, from experience, for speaker users.

I have seen some folks sing praises for using non-mic'd headphones in combination with this Zalman clip-on mic:

It looks like a pretty good solution for folks who are very demanding about their headphone's sound quality, etc. They can pick whatever headphone they prefer, and just clip the mic on to the cord within reasonable proximity of their mouth.

I have this mic, it comes with the headset, it is great for speaking, but it ain t good enought for VAC (Voice activated controls).

Being griped on the headset cord, it end up far from the mouth on the left or right, so it get many external noises, and having no noise filtering, many times the command given have to be skopen real loud to overcome background noises, without counting that with a headset your skeaking volume goes usually louder than normal.

This problem give me 2 choices, high % of botched/wrong commands or my wife screaming a STFU a she wan t to sleep. And PC aint on the bedroom.

I have never tried a high-end headset. All the ones I've tried cost around 10 bucks and they all do put strain on my ears after less than an hour of continuous usage.

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

Many reviewer use to review 5.1 headphone quality over surround headphone. This so wrong, both have diferrent intents and diferent market. Why the hell would you hear music on 5.1 if they have never been recorded with such an intent.

I m glad to see someone have diferent sets for diferent purposes.

And yes investing in a good headset if you use them a lot is a must.

Its like buying a top bike and saving on the tires, gonna buy you a headache.

Any headset geared for "gaming" in my experiance are just pieces of overpriced junk especially the 5.1 type.

If you could really make surround sound work inside an earpiece of a set of cans then most music/sound technicians and audiophiles would use them. Its just a gimmick and you are best using your souncards/AV units built in software produced surround.

Do yourself and your ears a big favour and invest in a descent pair of Stereo headphones from the likes of Sennheiser, AKG, Denon or Beyerdynamic and then buy a 3.5 male to female stereo lead and a notebook mic.

Use a couple of cable ties to mount mic to side of your cans and you have a headset that will far outlast most of the "gaming" toys you can purchase and give you far superior sound quality plus you also have an excellent set of music headphone for chilling out with.

Some notes;):

Audiofiles don t use so called 5.1 + headset because:

1) Music arent recorded to be surround so its pointless to hear them on such a system, and almost pointless on a home theater.

2) Industry ain t willing to put quality headfones on 5.1 because of the production cost and estimnated market size.

So any kind or argumentation based on such a declaration ain t very serious.

There s no way a 2.X system being able to reproduce even a 4.X system, no matter what, you only have to know basic principle on sound propagation to know that.

There must be a minimum space beetween speaker on the hearfone for them to work fairly, especially a 5.1, that why so much of them are BS, speaker are too close to each others and on those you don t really notice a diference.

So 5.X phones are for gaming and 2.X phones are for listening to "flat" recorded sounds aka music. If this wasn t true then Hometheater would be BS, and no, there s no may a headset can perform as good as a wide spreaded system, that for sure.

If your not able to detect spacial holes in your gaming with your 2.X headset in proper games, that because your internal sound processor or your hears aint that good or both.

2X system have huge hole in front or on the rear and in some degree of heights, it doesn t matter how expensive your set is.

Now i concur that you don t need this kind of stuff in a lot of games, but in the few it makes diference the game is really more enjoyable.

I'm just curious as to why some people use headsets- I've never used them for gaming/sims before? I have a full 5.1 surround system- so I can't imagine putting on a headset and missing out on the sound... unless people are trying to avoid rocking their houses. Do headsets add anything additional to the sim- that gets lost without them?

Explain? You need a headset for that? It doesn't work through normal speakers and microphone?

You don't need it per sé, but it's much much better to be able to listen to comms (teamspeak) through your headset.

Thanks for the reply. I don't use multiplayer features... I only plan on using the microphone for VAC commands. I mainly wanted to see if a headset was necessary- or whether it was optional.
