Just Because You Can

I had a mission quite like this for v1.02 and the Su33 - wanted to see how well it worked with the Su27.

No guided weapons, no electronic goodies . . . . just the RWR, two rocket pods, and some 500kg bombs.

Extremely good fun . . . . I almost prefer dropping bombs in the Su27 to anything else.

On with the screenies

Getting to this point is the most difficult aspect of the mission - given that I started about 50km away and this is an Excellent S300 site.

Now it's possible to dodge the missiles . . . but if you hide in the ground clutter and pop up every now and again, you can get steady bearings from the RWR and be back in the clutter long before the missiles they fire can get you. However, as you close, the missiles start to safety-detonate disturbingly close to you . . . . a giant fireball above you is quite spooky.

Rockets to take out the radar trucks - there's a minimum launch range for the S300, and by going vertical you can keep well within it. So much turn and so much power on this baby . . . .

Smoked one . . . .

And another . . . . shockwaves, mmmn.

ScreenShot_507.jpg

Two down . . .

ScreenShot_508.jpg

Switch to 500 kilo bombs - a pair of FABs and a pair of RBKs, loaded asymmetrically on the fuselage pylons to allow dropping of single weapons.

ScreenShot_514.jpg

"The finest ECM in the world is a 500lb bomb down the feedhorn of the tracking radar"

Someone famous said that . . . .

ScreenShot_515.jpg

There it goes . . .

ScreenShot_518.jpg

A single RBK500 will happily take out a pair of launchers in the standard S300 layout - just line them up.

ScreenShot_524.jpg

Oooh, all those little explosions, aren't they pretty?

ScreenShot_528.jpg

Make a strafing run on one of the remaining launchers . . . .

ScreenShot_530.jpg

And head home - could stay here strafing all day, but since the radars and most of the launchers are gone, the site's effectively dead.

ScreenShot_535.jpg

Obligatory flyby on the tower - Maverick would be proud.

ScreenShot_536.jpg

Love the dust trails in v1.1 . . . .

ScreenShot_531.jpg

Approach.

ScreenShot_533.jpg

Final.

ScreenShot_534.jpg

Landing.

One Excellent S300 site, gone. Job done.

Next time: Taking on a Hawk complex protected by AAA - once you get within the min range of the SAM, you're within range of a nasty little stream of tracer.

Sweet shots...always enjoy reading, or err looking at, picture stories like this.

Howabout making a few more?

Just nitpicking...but it looks like you forgot your flaps on the landing. Tsk tsk ;)

Well somewhere on Ubi there are a couple of threads entitled "A Radeon, a Gig of RAM and . . . . " which followed the same general layout - try digging those up if you have the time :)

And pfffft about flaps. Everyone knows the Su27 looks sexier landing without them . . . . . check out the Sukhoi demonstration videos for confirmation of that :D

heh...well if you want to talk about Sexy Flankers..IMHO Flaps down on a flanker IS prettier.

I just like how it looks when the flanker is at High AOA, like in my sig, with the flaps down. The sun reflects off them with a different angle than to the rest of the plane. Puuurrrdy!

I know you didnt really intend for me to respond to that, but how can I help it?? :]

Uh, BGP? The Colonel wants to talk to you. Seems to be mumbling something about straying from the glideslope. :P

I think he said: "Negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full". :D

Lucky you, your cockpit zoom works. Mine is gimped, cant zoom in or out, makes gunzo gay, guided and unguided A-G weaponry is a no-go, all I can do is paint some fighters with my radar and fire some missiles to scare the AI.

That's why I fly the su-25T now, I have an airport surrounded by manpads, this creates realistic "emergency situations", so I can practice dead stick landings and more (the damage model makes things really interesting)
