SimFreak Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 (edited) There is a reason for a wind speed limit on a crosswind landings. And all of us are HOTEL SIERRA pilots here so here's a moderate difficulty challenge. Land on a runway without breaking anything. Simple enough, right? Post your track as proof of your HOTEL SIERRA status :D Here's a mission. Runway 11 Winds are from 171 at 56knots. Crosswind limit exceeded by 21 knots! It doesn't have to be pretty...see my tracks as prove of that. :D And always enjoy and have fun!Bad_weather_bad day.zipmytrack.zip Edited January 15, 2011 by SimFreak
tusler Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 great fun thanks for the miz. here is my track, what I did was split the throttles and flew most of the approach on the #2 eng to counter the wind vane effect and I tried to slip onto the rwy at the last second but it did not work that well. But I did get it down without blowing the tires :PTusler.zip Ask Jesus for Forgiveness before you takeoff :pilotfly:! Puma Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Hotel Sierra or Sierra Hotel? There is a reason for a wind speed limit on a crosswind landings. And all of us are HOTEL SIERRA pilots here so here's a moderate difficulty challenge. Land on a runway without breaking anything. Simple enough, right? Post your track as proof of your HOTEL SIERRA status :D ! Sorry to be that anal dude who jumps on something out of topic... but isn't the term "Sierra Hotel"? I read once that it was a navy pilot term abbreviating "SH$T HOT". Can anyone else confirm that? Stretch Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Hotel Sierra could just as easily be "HOT SH*T" which is equally acceptable. SimFreak Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 Alright. It seemed that was too easy. (Or we have too many Hotel Sierra or Sierra Hotel pilots here) Next mission is the same thing except weather is +5 knots. Tolerance on side-way movement during touchdown is not as lenient and will cause a burst tire. Good luck. great fun thanks for the miz. here is my track, what I did was split the throttles and flew most of the approach on the #2 eng to counter the wind vane effect and I tried to slip onto the rwy at the last second but it did not work that well. But I did get it down without blowing the tires :P That was a heck of an approach! But touchdown was very nice. It seems landing under that angle will be useful in next +5 knots attempt. Lange_666 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Yup, great fun. Cool little mission this one. But i wonder if the tires getting blown upon landing are simulated realisticly? If i look at crosswing landing video's of other types of aircraft i guess not. It seems they always blow if you still swing the nose around on touchdown even if that landing is switft and smooth. After few tries a got this nice landing :) altough i slightly over run the runway, not sure about my brakes. (i'm running Beta 3) okeyy in the +5knots mission i couldn't land whitout breaking all the tires. I tried to replay your track in beta4 and you cratered few feet away from the runway. I think replays are not cross-beta comparable. Ok, this landing is really ugly one. Not sure how to help you....you should be able to download my mission and remove rain.... How can open a track file by clicking on the link on this forum? I get an error message (MissionEditor/lua not working). When you click link on a forum, it downloads the track file to specified location. Place it in //dcs a-10c beta/missions/tracks. Then start the sim and click "replay" on main menu. Well, I've made it. Not nice but in one piece. That sure was a hard landing (shock absorbers cried there for a moment) but your tires didn't explode. Am I doing this right? Wow. I haven't laughed so much in a while. Cunning approach there :D That does give me an idea of next "silly" challenge. Superslide after touchdown... Drifting in A10. Too bad you busted tires during it.
