personnally i prefer to make some restrictions over my electricity consumption for some time than putting my life in danger

Well that's great you can. But look around you, do you have any idea how many eletricity was used when creating all those platic things lying around your table (and don't start to think about where the oil came from, mexican gulf maybe). Do you have any idea how many electricity is required for electrolysis when making alluminium. Everything you see around you required electricity to make.

According to eurostat, only 28.2% of all electricity produced is consumed by households.

My country gets 55% of electricity from atom (France gets around 78 from atom), and thats when using the less efficient (but safer) VVER reactors. Even if we disconnected all households from power, there still wouldn't be anough power without atomic power plants.

It`s that simple:

You want an agricultural country = no nuclear power.

You want a country with a powerful industry, manufacturing, trade, etc. = nuclear power.

While some countries may go mainly agricultural, many cannot for a number of reasons. Nuclear energy gives you inmense power with lower cost and reasonable safety. Reasonable I say because how many deaths nuclear power plants have caused since they`ve been introduced? Yes there have been accidents and yes there have been radiation leaks but when you draw the line nuclear power has brought much more good than bad. Our technology for good or bad, our very existence is highly dependent on energy. And the demands for energy are ever increasing. There are places even whole countries where due to geophysical factors nuclear power is the only solution to this high demand.

It is enough for some people to hear the scary word "nuclear" to make them feel uncomfortable. It`s not a curse, it`s a bless to be able to get so many energy from so little. We just need to use it properly and control it.

Now about Fukushima, IMO some media are not trying to be realistic, but just for the sake of the news they are spreading the hype. I`m not interested in conspiracy theories, or how the government is lying to its people, how doom`s day has come, or some other editor fantasies. I`m interested in facts and expert opinions.

One thing I highly admire is the discipline of japanese. Anywhere else (certainly here), and you would hear stories about plundering, people taking advantage of the situation, increasing fuel/food/water prices...etc

But not in Japan. I think the whole world can learn a lot from them.

fine . why don't you take a ticket to Japan and go help the people out there inside the plant . then i would like to have your feedbacks about nuclear industry . EthearealN , you're right on one point my comments may be fearmonging but the fact is i don't like nuclear industry . and i consider that that technology is an extremely hasardous one (i don't come back over the 200 000 years waste) , and that has not been said enough . my last wish is to increase Japan trauma and for that reason since few posts i'm more ponderate in my interventions .

@Ethereal,winz and topol : to be short , if you're trying to defend nuclear industry , i disapprove , if you're trying not to add to japanese trauma i'm with you . i canno't know but well , i said what i had to say about nuclear industry , point .

What about coal/oil powerplants then? :music_whistling:

And those also release radioactive particles into the atmosphere...

Reactor 4 is on fire again

How can a reactor be on fire? What exactly is burning?

While I am qualified to help out in some of the work, I don't speak the language. I wouldn't help: I'd be in the way.

then i would like to have your feedbacks about nuclear industry .

Ah, so I have to go into an ongoing nuclear emergency to be allowed to comment - but you don't? ;)

EthearealN , you're right on one point my comments may be fearmonging but the fact is i don't like nuclear industry . and i consider that that technology is an extremely hasardous one (i don't come back over the 200 000 years waste)

Not liking something doesn't give you a blank check on fearmongering. In fact, fearmongering is never ever okey no matter what the topic is. You give people solid facts and then they can make up their mind. Allude to things that are simply untrue (like you've done with your "humanity dead" etcetera things) and no matter what your intent: you are wrong. There's even a name for it - "pious fraud" - where people find it acceptable to say something that is not true or "skirts the edges" in defence of a just cause. Other examples would be exhaggerating the "red threat" in order to help gain support for a good defence policy; even if the policy is good, it's just not okey to do that exhaggeration. In fact, the tactic of fearmongering is exactly the same thing as when a government or corporation conducts a "coverup", and I really hate it when people complain about "powerful lobbies" while doing the exact same thing. (EDIT: A good proverb I picked up from the american skeptical movement: "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but no-one is entitled to their own facts.")

@Ethereal,winz and topol : to be short , if you're trying to defend nuclear industry , i disapprove

What I have mainly been doing is to give some counterweight to deplorable and ugly (in my opinion) attempts at using the misfortune of the Japanese to support an agenda. There's people fighting for their lives and livelihoods over there, yet people are spending their time in their comfy sofas trying to use the situation to help their own ideological agenda. That is something of which I really disapprove.

So please: discuss the ongoing situation at Fukushima NPP factually. If nothing else, at least out of respect for the Japanese wounded at the plant. People who fight hard, with their lives on the line, to protect their fellow man deserve at least that level of respect.

@Ethereal : i thought my precedent post put a final point to the discussion . whatever you say you won't convince me that 200 000 waste is good for humanity . from now on if you want to continue that discussion let's do it by MP . concerning situation in Japan yes i admit some infos may be more alarmist than they really are

Those who left Japan, who landed in germany for example, say, that the goverment lies, underrating the issue where they can, to prevent mass panics. This situation is out of control, now the workers left the plant, some are returned, but I guess this is getting worse period!

Exactly. :D

Well, to be honest, I am qualified to run pipes (really advanced stuff! :P ), so as long as there's someone with experience of the exact machinery I could help out in either repairs or doing emergency cooling stuff. But since I don't speak the language, the risk of me thinking they told me to do A, while they in fact told me to absolutely not do A, is too big. :P
