GGTharos Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 This damage doesn't tell you anything. Here's the type of damage you can expect to see from just about any missile proximity detonation: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Loaded_Dice Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 You are probably right, but if we can agree that the damage on this A-10 has been inflicted by a manpads or strela type of missile with a warhead weighting only a few couple of pounds, the shrapnels exploding from the warhead of a SA-3, SA-6 or S-200 missile will be accordingly much larger, depending on the distance from the target. As we all have seen in documentaries, a direct hit from one of these missiles will not only penetrate the target with that large holes on it, but it will probably completely disintegrate it in mid air :-(
GGTharos Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 If the shrapnel from those large warheads didn't kill the pilots or outright cut the plane in two (like it did with that F-16 some time ago), then I think that's exactly the sort of damage you'd see. The same type of pattern, just larger holes were also apparent on the F-117 that was shot down as well. The fragments of those warheads aren't very large. They will vary in size, but they're not very large. An expanding rod type warhead might show a different damage pattern, but still not what was seen on that plane IMHO. Further, AFAIK the initial strike should have taken out all of those SAM sites anyway. Steel Jaw Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 F22s are not needed over Lybia. Theere is no interceptor threat that cannot be handled by conventional fighter jets. nscode Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 They have LOTS of inop equipment, that means they have lots of targets to offer, making it easier to hide pieces that do work. Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
hassata Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 (edited) Why would you send an air dominance fighter to pound ground? Pretty stupid inquiry. Could you be any ruder? Edit: I assumed you were directing that at the poster. I now realize the comment probably applies to the linked article. In that case, go postal. Edited March 22, 2011 by hassata 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Cp Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 (edited) Wow! The Libyans have set up their radar exactly like in this video uploaded in 2007! Even the trucks are in the same position relative to the radar, And the tracks on the ground are identical! I didn't know the libyans were into war reenactment. :D (also strange tomahawk, guided by a cursor, I'd say its more likely an AGM-130) (this post was in no way intended as an insult against anyone except the one who reuploaded that clip on youtube with a false title. There's enough misinformation in this and most other conflicts as there is, thank you.) Edited March 22, 2011 by Cp 3

In that case, go postal. I didn't feel insulted. The possibility of F-22 participation was hinted at by Hillary Clinton and mentioned to the press by senior USAF officials, notably Gen. Norton Schwartz. He at least did not find it a stupid inquiry, given the fact the F-22 is also advertised as a capable SEAD platform. http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/03/libya-may-give-the-f-22-its-first-wartime-test/ I have no opinion on this except that it would have been thrilling to wittness the first combat assignment of F-22. jpm1 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 i wanted to edit my post and man 5 posts in 20s :D . i wanted to say that even if they aren't considered by most as necessary , it's very probable that the F-22 get their baptism of fire in Libya SU-25 missions [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

GGTharos Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I didn't feel insulted. You shouldn't be, it wasn't directed at you. I have no opinion on this except that it would have been thrilling to wittness the first combat assignment of F-22. On that we agree. It would have been an interesting debut, though I think they deemed it unnecessary thanks to the massive cruise missile strike. They're also using the newer tactical tomahawk, though they didn't use the loiter capability.
