CONFIRMED: Next aircraft will be a fixed wing US FIGHTER!

Not sure why the F-35 isn't getting some love in this forum. It is designed for multiple roles and is very versatile. Is it because it has never been battle tested? We could have many liveries from all US services and many NATO nations. The only question would be will DCS design all 3 variants or just go with one?

The Boeing F/A-18E/F is an ultra-modern, well documented aircraft that is exported throughout the world, so nothing about it is too secret to be modeled on a computer simulation. It is basically a legacy hornet with increased-sized fuel tanks, greater payload capacity, beefed-up engines, provisions for the same awesome radar of the F-14, a very responsive and precise FCS (flight control system) that allows it to perform maneuvers that a legacy hornet only dreamed of, and a modernized cockpit that is very user-friendly.

Not entirely accurate to call it "a legacy hornet with increased tanks..." etc. It's essentially a new airplane. Very little in common with the "legacy" hornet.

4' taller, 4' wider, 10,000 pounds heavier empty...

And as to the radar...Where did you see provisions for the F-14 radar? I don't think the F-18 platform has any more capability to carry the F-14's radar system than my car does. It'd be irrelevant, too...the F-14's radar was built around attacking bomber formations with the Phoenix missile.

Because its still on the prototype stage, and there is no way that Eagle Dynamics will be able to get all the documentation needed to make a high fidelity F-35 sim.

+1 for this

Why, o why can't people understand that F-22 or F-35 or any of those are way too "new"

Pffft, why not the one that broke up in a 3g turn? You're not even trying.

O_o What was that

Despite the sweet mudhen model...

Where do you people get the name 'mudhen' from? I work on them and have for several years and never once have I ever heard this term until I saw it on this forum. It's a Strike Eagle, nothing more. Or a 'piece of shit' as we affectionately refer to them.

I'm pretty sure it's not a military nickname, or if it was it's obsolete... which to me means it doesn't really apply. Sounds more like a civilian term than anything else...

Next time I see our pilots I'll ask them but this term is totally foreign to me. I guess F/A-18 ground crews actually do call it the 'Rhino', or at least they did in some places. Three bases (which means 75% of the places there are F-15Es), never once heard 'Mudhen'.

I'm not surprised you don't hear it in the F-15E community.

One definite non-civilian place I've heard it - Dos Gringos. F-16 pilot musical group. Song "I wish I had a gun just like the A-10"

http://www.dosgringosrocks.com/music-14.html

The superhornets are referred to as Rhino in lots of official places. Among other things, the separate name is to make sure the cat / arrestor crews don't set the carrier systems up for the lighter jet. That would get ugly.

It might be a foreign air force nickname. In the UK, ground attack aircraft were called 'mud movers'. So MUD & HEN (instead of eagle) fits the bill (hehe) nicely.

Uh...the F-20 never made it past prototype.

They tried to sell it but nobody wanted to buy, foreign or domestic. I think that can be safely ruled out.

Despite the sweet mudhen model, I see a lot of problems implementing something like that in a detail-sim.

So according to the new statement of GGTharos http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1149170&postcount=175 , the list is now without the F18E/F:

I feel sad removing the F20 because this is an updated F-5 and may not be more complex than a F15 or F16 to make (if ED has the data of the F20 of course!, but a big IF I agree...)

You can't get reliable data on the F-20. It was never produced, so all you have is a prototype that no one really remembers.

There are advanced F-5 versions out there.

And how does me telling a guy that he doesn't know what he's talking about eliminate the F/A-18E/F? I've said elsewhere that I don't believe the shornet to be a likely candidate, but you picked up the wrong post.

Though the F20 was F-5 with some systems taken from F-16 or something like that, so it would be an interesting mix...

To me, F-5 technology is too old if we compare to the system in the A10. Why not take some old WW2 fighters, if so ? There are also US fixed wing fighters .. :smilewink:

This is DCS, not 'let's throw together some airframe with some choice avionics'. ;)

I see you don't know ... there is one F-5 version out there with MFCDs, AMRAAMs, and all kinds of other stuff. I'd say it's about as useless as a MiG-21 with the same features, but what do I know :D It's got shinies and stuff!

The Superhornet can do the Pirouette which is a preprogrammed Teken style move in the FCS for dogfights. Its actually executed by Full aft stick + full lateral stick + full pedal.

Another minor point to consider. Thrustmaster would love it if DCS would do the F-16C .... since that would likely boost sales of their Cougar HOTAS.

Love it or hate it .. but I think enough good points have boiled things down that in all likelihood it will end up being the F-16C. Actually, that aircraft is NEEDED here compared to the F-15C. The existing DCS aircraft cannot carry HARMs. Nor can the F-15C. And with more and more complex air defenses in missions being done by DCS, and by player-generated missions, we are going to need that capability for the SEAD role.

GG only disputed the statement that the superbug was an "ultra-modern, well-documented" aircraft.

The F-20, on the other hand, was a prototype. Only 3 were ever built. 2 of them were crashed. The final curtain on the plane was closed 25 years ago. I'd be stunned if anyone at ED even sat in a meeting and actually threw it out as a possible candidate....let alone actually deciding to do it.

It, and its F-5 parents, are beautiful aircraft...but they're still not gonna sim it.
