asparagin Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 (edited) First of all I set coordinates of my native village :P We have a river running through our town, but in Outerra was no river, not even a town :( But hills that surroundind our town are very well recognizable  Im thinking about spending 15$ to try the ful version functionability... from their forum: The demo currently comes with just a single biome - northern type forests. There are no rivers and lakes implemented yet, and no weather yet. Almost all the areas are work in progress. Installed also. Yep, it has a lot of potential for an alpha. Boberro Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Replace Apache by Ka-50 and we have great looking environment. Nice colors, not soo "depressing", mountains are mountains.... But I'd like to see full city view. So far they only put one-two units around nowhere except trees and that's all.... Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... leafer Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 (edited) First of all I set coordinates of my native village :P We have a river running through our town, but in Outerra was no river, not even a town :( from the release note Limitations of current alpha state of the technology This alpha release comes out to show the potential of the engine, but it still lacks many features commonly found in other engines, and especially the effects are postponed until the major features are implemented. 213 Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 from what i can tell, it's adept at rendering natural environment, but when it comes to man-made formations... this is supposed to be la harbor:
leafer Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I tried to download the Outera but I kept getting cut off. My question is am I missing something that offers months of fun by not installing it? ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
rainbird Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 (edited) just a 2 second perusal of this guys work (the landscape generation, in particular) suggests it is not particularly impossible. it boils down to a different programming paradigm. this guy is procedurally generating his worlds, whereas most programmers only know how to utilize monolithic prebuilt maps created by artists using Maya/Max. i'm sure it would be entirely possible today with appropriate programming techniques. but it would be a big renovation task to turn something like DCS into a procedural engine. it's basically this: http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=2940 an old technique Edited February 27, 2012 by rainbird
Sanch0 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Three different looks: Outerra, ED Nevada and Google Earth PVAF "A fighter without a gun... is like an airplane without a wing" dedicated to F-4 Phantom
Suchacz Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 If the Outerra picture has the correct texture, than it will be the best of them :smilewink: Correct textures, rivers and lakes will be added in later versions... Sanch0 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 If the Outerra picture has the correct texture, than it will be the best of them :smilewink: Yes, but Nevada looks very good for me on this screenshot - there are a lot of details and hi-res textures. PVAF "A fighter without a gun... is like an airplane without a wing" dedicated to F-4 Phantom
Boberro Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Ground texture is still smudged, not sharp like Outterra is. But mountains look nice though. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
sobek Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 That's probably because there is no noise on the nevada textures. Or the textures are too far away to see the noise. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
Moa Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 What are you guys smoking? :) ED Nevada looks great, and it is populated with 3-dimensional stuff too! and clouds, and objects to destroy, and has a nice sky gradient that varies with time, and lamps, and dynamic illumination (not shown), and utility vehicles/starter units, and ... and ... From those pictures it is clear that the ED stuff is the more advanced terrain system.
asparagin Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 We're not smoking anything, but have the habit of reading release notes. ;) Spoiler AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, MSI MEG X570 UNIFY (AM4, AMD X570, ATX), Noctua NH-DH14, EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti XC3 ULTRA, Seasonic Focus PX (850W), Kingston HyperX 240GB, Samsung 970 EVO Plus (1000GB, M.2 2280), 32GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600 DIMM CL16, Cooler Master 932 HAF, Samsung Odyssey G5; 34", Win 10 X64 Pro, Track IR, TM Warthog, TM MFDs, Saitek Pro Flight Rudders
213 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 no, it's not basically that. but you're right, it's an old technique. and it has nothing to do with artists. the programmer has to write the engine. the artist can do whatever they want to the extent granted by it.
rainbird Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 it is fundamentally a mathematical procedural description of landscapes. so it is "basically that". sure, his terrain project is more related to describing features of the terrain using vector graphics. the idea of "fitting" a river between two points on a map with infinite LOD is a procedural problem. but i have not even read his papers, merely looked at his screen shots. maybe you could tell me what it basically all boils down too if not the basic procedural techniques illustrated by the link in my last post?
Krunkskimo Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 i knew i could find a thread to revive. http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=637.0 Alpha is released This alpha release features: A complete, real scale planet Earth that can be explored Created from real elevation data with resolution 90m where available, 1km resolution for oceans; data are dynamically downloaded as you go Further refined by fractal-based procedural techniques down to centimeter-level details Vector-based road system that integrates with the procedurally generated terrain Ability to place static stock objects and drive provided vehicles It's been a long time coming I'm sure there's a few of you who have been waiting for this.
