GGTharos Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 (edited) Perhaps the sim should come with a ... HOTAS sim :D It is essential to understand the HOTAS first - in fact, the military version of the sim is specifically geared to help people learn it among other things in the cockpit. It is absolutely essential that you set up your HOTAS first. At first, you WILL have some issues because you won't be able to remember which hat does what, but this goes away with a little practice. After that, the training should be easy enough to understand - frankly, I find the in-game training and the manual fairly good, and this is supplemented by user contributed training materials and checklists and other documents as well. Unfortunately, there's also only so much space in the manual: The aircraft has a good number of thick manuals that come with it, and you'd have to read the -1 and -34 to know absolutely everything /just/ about operation of the aircraft. There's also limited time in which to make training missions - can't really teach you every mode of failure there is. But the neat thing is ... ok, so you run into a few snags with this sim, but the knowledge you'll gain here will transfer readily to other simulators, including, obviously, future DCS modules. Combat Flight simulation is a very complex thing - and like Oleg said, training can always be improved ... but please do keep in mind there's a limit to the amount of training that can be provided by ED. This is why you have this forum to come to ask questions on as well - so you're not left with zero resources, all on your own. Still learning things like that. Thanks, I hadn't noticed it. The manual is fine and good and whatnot, but it doesn't actually teach you much, and some of the tutorial videos don't tell you how to do some things, they often assume you know what's what and how to achieve the final goal, but not necessarily how to perform the steps leading up to that goal so you end up chasing your tail trying to understand what the tutor means. The training missions built into the sim aren't that much help either. RobAnt Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 (edited) Thanks guys, your input is greatly appreciated. FYI, and not really pertinent, the first simulator I flew was the original Jaguar simulator at the OCU, RAF Lossiemouth in the '70's. I didn't get much help and simply took off and followed verbal turning cues that took me down to for a bombing run on the Severn bridge near Bristol. It always seemed to last just a minute or two. I only flew it once with the full motion system engaged. Of course it doesn't mean I know anything except how to take off and fly straight and level. :D:D Apparently they always needed someone to sit in the hot seat during calibration settings at night. Of course I don't remember his name now, but I'd like to thank the guy who invited me to do a couple of them. We're talking about the mid-1970's. Edited June 25, 2011 by RobAnt

Frostiken Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 (edited) That trademark is that of 3D Realms, right? Wait, didn't work out very well for them :D I hate getting these changelogs early because I'm always all excited and shit waiting for it :) Really can't wait for the ME changes. Also about the IFFCC BIT... anyone ever think about actually making the BIT interactive? ('Set EAC switch to arm...' etc.) Totally pointless and useless, but the very first time I ran the BIT I actually followed the movements around until I realized it went on without me. Frostiken Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 (edited) Well most important to me is having the correct changelog when the patch does come out, since features get added and dropped, not knowing that something was changed in say, how GBUs are handled by the physics could cause confusion. This isn't too bad in this but in other games can cause a real headache, especially balance changes where it's unclear if it's a bug or not. Regardless... one thing that would be nice is a sort of 'special attention' page of the Patcher that will draw attention to particularly important changes. After the last patch where all the idiots came on here to try to figure out why EAC wouldn't engage, it's clear that too many people are NOT reading the changelog, so perhaps a special pop-up or semi-unskippable page that will detail the major control / functional changes only would alleviate some of it... ie: "Axis of engines sound was reversed" wouldn't be on there, but "Emergency handles now only actuate on right-clicks" would be, so at least SOME people who just blindly apply patches would realize there's actually a changes in the changelog :D In this case: - "The Shore" and "Devil's Cross" campaigns removed. These 3rd party campaigns are available on the File Exchange. http://files.lockon.ru/en/ - Magnetic heading indication in HARS mode was made functional. Excessive HARS attitude gyro precession was fixed. HARS Fast Erect button should work correctly now. - Manual MFCD power knob implemented. Must turn on during ramp start. - GAU-8 Clearing Cycle was modeled. If GUN ARM switch is set to OFF less than 2.5 seconds after gun trigger was released, GUN UNSAFE will be lit on Caution Light Panel. Gun will jam on the next fire attempt. Probably should be the big notes, though maybe not the last one since I imagine it's fairly rare that that happens. Edited July 5, 2011 by Frostiken [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Frostiken Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Fair enough, but in my opinion if you install a piece of software on your computer without attempting to even try to find out what it does, that makes you, well... I mean the only case could be made for Steam but it even gives you a link directly to changes when it updates. There's really zero excuse except simple ignorance. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EtherealN Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Well, one obvious example would be the Steam autopatcher? ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
