Ice9ine Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Hi all, Firstly I would like to say hello. I am new here but have spent the last few days surfing the forums after my purchase of A-10c Warthog. A bit about me. I am 41, live in Australia, happily married and in a professional career. I am also an avid gamer and have been for well over 30 years. Commodore 64, cassette tapes and syntax errors anyone? I would say I am also a sim enthusiast to some degree (no not those Sims games) with a period where I was totally hooked on FSX and always had a fascination for most good flight sims. I purchased DCS: A-10c warthog from steam after reading up on it and I must say, you guys have yourselves one hell of a amazing sim here. This begs the question as the title of this post sort of implies....Are there any players of this sim that generally do not have a passion of aircraft? I mean...a real passion? Yes, I like planes. I am a male after all, however this sim is just so real and so amazing that I am wondering whether it attracts mostly military buffs and plane enthusiasts. I mean it would almost be like asking an Atheist to study the Bible. However, I find myself completely compelled to stick out this long learning curve and I am constantly encouraged to tame this wonderful beast. I am a gamer that is not a pilot, enthusiast, plane engineer or military buff. I am however a mature gamer that is one hundred percent, completely in love with this simulatiion. I hope many others are not frightened off by the initial complexity. After only two days, I see reward in my efforts to memorize start up procedures and navigation. I am fortunate to be able to play this on the highest possible settings and res, which totally engulfs me in terms of immersion and eye candy. May I finally commend all of you. I have surfed this board numerous times and have read nothing but supportive and helpful replies to fellow members. You have a wonderful, mature community here and I look foward to the time I may be able to offer some assistance and productive feedback also to our fellow Warthog pilots. Cheers and happy flying. 3 AMD 1100T Phenom II x 6 / Gigabyte HD 6970 / 8 gig DDR3 / WIN7 64 / ASUS VH242H LCD 24" @ 1080p / ASUS M4A88TD-M / Thermaltake 750w / Logitech G35 7.1 headphones
Mud Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 The sim is a gem, and I absolutely agree on the great community we have here. Cibit Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I am not really a propeller head. I played OFP when it came out and IL2 and generally in a MP enviroment. bluepilot76 Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Hi Ice! Congratulations on finding DCS A10C! I am sure this is the best sim you can fly at the moment.. When I discovered it I took like one shot on my iMAC, deliberated for about 5 minutes, and went and bought a gaming machine instead, (all previous plans of going Mac probook and probably leaving sims behind me went out the window). As for your question, I have always been into aviation and flight sims. I would love not to have to fly flight sims, but you just cant do these things in the real world. Enjoy! latearrival Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Are there any players of this sim that generally do not have a passion of aircraft? I mean...a real passion? Welcome to the forums! I'm in a near identical demographic to you, except I grew up with the Sinclair ZX Spectrum rather than the Commodore 64 (My first flight sim was Nightflight, which required a massive 16K to run. The "night" bit was because the only thing you could see out the 'cockpit' was a few pixels to mark the runway!). Anyway, to your question -I have no interest in (real) flying, planes of any type or the military. Most of the technical references to real life stuff here on these forums goes over my head. However, I have dabbled with sims in the past (Combat Flight Simulator, FSX, Falcon 4 AF) and, following a multi-year break, I stumbled across this magnificent sim by chance. The first time I sat in the cockpit and started her up, hearing everything coming to life, I was hooked... automag928 Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I guess I was the opposite. I've been into planes since I can remember. My grandfather and uncle were both in the USAF, and I have other families in other branches. My brother in law is a maintenance test pilot for the Apache, another uncle in the Army as well. My step dad flies for the FAA, my mom has her private pilots license. I've flown some in private planes, seaplanes, corporate jets...I love flying and planes. I've had pretty much bought every flight sim I could find since I could remember, and like you have found this to be an amazing simulation. We've come a long way in terms of details, graphics, immersion. Everytime I climb into my virtual A-10C cockpit, I smile :)
KKR75 Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'm 35, have 2 very young kids (2yrs old and 2 months old), and still clock in at least an hour or 2 every day. I've learned so much over the past month, it's finally starting to all come together. 1
sungsam Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 (edited) I'm also 40 and I must admit this isn't a rare age for flight simers. I find the explanations on your favours very natural for our age. I think we have been attracted by the complicated and demanding nature of combat flight sims that is also very natural for our age, especially at the educational level you also mention for your self. I think silly action/arcade games does not satisfy you ! At list this is my case here ! ...and Yes ..... deep inside you ... you were always enthusiast of flight and been a pilot ! If challenge is your second name, you must master Ka50 BlackShark also ! The only difference with you is that I had an Amstrad 464 cassetee syntax error ! Welcome to the best software ever made for PC based Combat Flight simulation ! Edited June 27, 2011 by sungsam DCS F16C 52+ w JHMCS ! DCS AH64D Longbow !
redfish Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Welcome Ice to the community. Nice to see another from the other side of the planet. I'm a big fan of the aircraft, the weapons, and the complexity DCS have created. My first sim's I remember were from the 1990's - F-19 Stealth Fighter by Microprose and Tornado by Digital integration. The complexity wasn't available then. Neither was the processing power, graphics power, ram requirements, 64bit instructions etc... Its been a long time between drinks for me and I am a convert from the other side of the fence *black ops* Every now and then you just have to return some lead to the earth. Playing black ops, I did this for three hundred hours saving the planet on steam. With A-10C , I get to do the same thing , just returning it in different way- usually CM, HEI, DU, laser guided, PGM, Slaved to MAV etc. etc. etc... When I get my 1.1.0.8 crash problem's solved (install Win7 64bit), I look forward to a few MP games with you fellow AUS & NZers around the traps. Alexrey Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I love everything there is about aircraft and how they fly, it just amazes me that aircraft can actually fly using Newton's 3rd Law and some pressure difference magic! I'm 22 years old (quite young for this place although I'm sure there are people here who are younger than me) and actually plan on joining the RAF as aircrew once I'm done with university (if there are still any jobs left after all the defence cuts). I'm currently doing my final undergraduate year studying maths and geography and will be doing honours in maths, JUST so I can hopefully one day fly (I know, I should have done aeronautical engineering instead of pure maths). As long as I can have a career that allows me to deal with aircraft design or flight, I'll be happy for the rest of my life. So in short, yes I kinda like planes
Headspace Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 My first sim's I remember were from the 1990's - F-19 Stealth Fighter by Microprose and Tornado by Digital integration. The complexity wasn't available then. Neither was the processing power, graphics power, ram requirements, 64bit instructions etc... MS Flight Simulator 5 was my first. F-19 was my second. I'm pretty happy there are a few people who had that game. Cobrabase had a shot of it in one of his YouTube movies so I know he had it too. Still looking for more people who played A-10 Cuba, there has to be more than just me and the few others I've seen on the board.
Arrowhead Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I'm a private pilot in real life since 2003. I fly a Piper Cherokee. But I'm not that obsessed with planes like I was when I was a kid. I think about other things too. ;) Intel i9 12900K ROG Ryujin II Hydro Cooler PNY GeForce RTX 5090 OC EpicX 64GB RAM DDR5-6000

Zomba Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I'm probably a bit of a youngin at 32! Not a plane enthusiast at all. Certainly didn't know the fundimental rules of airmanship. So not only did I have to learn the details of the A-10c, I had to learn the basics of flight as well. I've been flying the sim consistently since B1 and It's been awesome. I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.
Ice9ine Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 Thanks for the welcomes and great replies. It seems there is a healthy diversity of gamers / simers / enthusiasts / pilots etc here. Awesome stuff people. Is it perfectly normal to go to bed picturing the cockpit and running through start up procedures in your head after three days on this baby? :) ...wait....I'm sure I was actually dreaming about it too. ....wait....I'm at work managing a business and I'm on the forums. automag928 Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Absolutely Hooked. This sim has a tendency to do that...Any free moment I have between 2 kids/wife, a puppy, work...its spent on flying the A-10 :) 1

Hell yeah F-16 combat pilot !!!! Was hooked from the get-go ! That was an amazing game for the time. Spent countless hours on it.... memories !!!
Cali Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Loved jets and flying since I can remember. Mechanic in the US Air Force, worked on A-10A, F-16's and now working on B-52's. I miss working on fighters, had a chance to fly an F-16 a few years back.....what a ride. I'm 34, married with 4 kids and starting school in a few weeks. I try to fly as much as I can, most of my flying is Friday and Saturday nights. First fighter jet I saw up close was the F-18 when I was.......well I can't remember how old I was. Nufsed Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Wait until you are flying in formation on one of the multiplayer servers, your hands are sweating as you try and match speed and altitude or trying to hook-up with the tanker....I tell ya it doesn't get much more real than this sim! You can almost smell the jet fuel........And for a "real challenge" try the 74th's Induction flight......just make sure you have a change of trousers handy!...:megalol: The four things a Wingman is allowed to say...
