About to buy Flaming Cliffs. Mistake?

Well, I have the cash in my virtual hand, but I wanted your opinions before I buy FC. I'm not a die-hard simmer. I used to be obsessed with flight sims (FS2002) so I know how to actually fly the plane (after a week of having this game, I haven't botched a landing yet!) and I'm getting the hang of the systems alright (I am still a bit confused, but it gets better with every mission). However, I only mess around in this sim for a couple of hours a day. I mean, I even fly using a mouse! Quite comfortable, actually. I set the left mouse button to fire, right mouse button to target, middle button for flares/chaff and the wheel is for throttle. That leaves a hand free for numlock - looking around.

In any case, I have some questions.

1) Does FC add physics to all planes, or just the new SU-25T?

2) From what I gathered, there is some definite FPS increase but it's miniscule. Am I correct?

3) I know there are some small fixes and improvements to avionics for the original planes, but are they anything major? Crucial?

4) I take it that the new weapons are all for SU-25T, right?

That seems to be all that pops into my head right now. If you answered yes to most of these questions, then why the hell am I bothering? I can't help but feel like I'm shelling out money for a patch, and the devs just added an extra plane so they don't feel as guilty.

I'm getting the download version, by the way. I'm too impatient for CDs, and Starforce doesn't bother me.

welcome to the forums!

1) It adds physics for the SU 25 and SU 25T

2) I havent seen any FPS increase

3) BVR engadements is changed with the new "jammer system" . New radar modes for fighters , and it fixed some buggs.

4) New weapons yes.. ( i think? i'm not a Frog pilot )

It's up to you . . . . but anyway, answers ahead:

1. Su25 and Su25T have an entirely new physics model (which rules), some small upgrades to the others.

2. Didn't notice any significant change in FPS.

3. The avionics changes change the BVR fight completely. The new radar modes for the Russian aircraft are more realistic, more challenging, and if you're a proper flightsimmer then yes, they are crucial.

4. The new weapons are for the Su25T, yes.

The addon has a distinctly Russian flavour - if you are certain you're only going to fly the American aircraft, it might not be for you.

If you like the Russian aircraft, then you will love FC. The Su25T is a wonderful challenge, the tweaked Su25 is another exercise in steam-gauge flying (and possibly a bigger challenge, although more in flying and navigating than the Su25T's systems employment challenges). The new radar modes make A2A combat more realistic, the Su27 can attack ground targets with dumb weapons, the Su33 A2A refuelling has to be flown entirely by hand, the glideslope stuff changes . . . .

The new seasons and ground targets make it all look and feel better - it really was worth the money to me.

If you want to start taking Lock On seriously, then buy FC and buy a HOTAS system. If you're happy to keep gently buzzing around with a mouse . . . . then maybe you're better off saving your money.

oh and while the SU-25's recieved new Scientific flight model all other aircraft recieved some tweaks as well. Both Su-27/33 just feel much better and smoother, and roll rate has changed.

A-10 also feels better.

Best £50 I've ever spent on a sim ... worth every penny!

Lol, I hated the Starforce slowdowns (well, actually halts, as everything stopped working, even the mouse cursor) on startup of the DL version, now I bought and installed the CD version, and now it even shows an annoying window, and the pc still comes to a dead stop, which makes listening to music horrible.

Great game, bad (well, don't know if it's bad, but it sure is annoying) copy protection

WHat are your specs and we can tell you your suggested settings.

As for joystick, I use a simple Microsoft joystick with twist handle and I do alright.

--> the Ground Units LODs Fix that you can download for FC1.1 dramatically improves performance.

No, also the vanilla Su-25 sports new, interesting weapons like the S-25L laser-guided rocket and the SPPU-22-1 gunpods. The Su-25 can carry four of them, and they can be tilted so as to "spray" ground targets from level flight.

Combined with the “Klyon-PS” laser rangefinder/target designator you can lock the guns on a specific target point that will get some hot bullet shower.

Of course, all this is also available on the heavier Su-25T

I can fully back Mr Wolf up on what he stated here, he's notouriously known to be a PITA when it comes to online playing this sim. :icon_jook
