159th_Viper Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 OK - sitting in front of the PC this afternoon for a quick battle on Battlefield 3 when all of a sudden the PC just switched off with absolutely no power, as if the power tripped. Household power was fine - no power to PC though - nothing! Have a surge-protector which was still on so it's not external I would think. No smells, no warning, no sounds, no nothing - just Poof, one second power, the next absolutely sweet-blow-f*all........ Any ideas? Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? EtherealN Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Might be the fuze is the power supply that tripped. You'd probably have to open it to find out (and even then, it might not be visible without bit of probing with a voltmeter). Could theoretically also be a rail that died, in which case the PSU is pretty much done for. (Usually costs more to repair than to just get a new PSU - and if you stilö have warranty you could get it replaced; some high-end PSU's have up to 7 years warranty.) If you are really unlucky, it's power cirquitry in the mobo (and in many cases, this is hard to check even with a volt-meter). My suggestion, if possible, would be to switch out PSU for another unit and test if things work then. If the PSU you test with is underpowered for your equipment though, I'd suggest doing it with the graphics card(s) removed. If the machine Posts at that point, you'll know it was your CPU and most likely the rest of the machine is still fine (unless you get interesting POST-code errors - check manual if you get constant beeping or, if you have a numeric display on the mobo, what the numbers mean). sobek Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 If the machine Posts at that point, you'll know it was your CPU I suspect you meant to say PSU :) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!

MTFDarkEagle Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Yes there is.. Does your PC start up at all? Or is it dead? Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
159th_Viper Posted October 30, 2011 Author Posted October 30, 2011 Does your PC start up at all? Or is it dead? I dragged it out of it's nest and opened it up to breath a wee bitty and then I ran outta steam. I'll put it back in the morning and see if it'll crank over. Sort of hoping it's just a 'heat time-out' (need to move it to a bigger case in any event). I'll see in the morning. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? cichlidfan Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 (edited) CorsairTX 750W Well, if it is the PSU, you should have a good warranty (not sure of the exact terns for the TX series). Unfortunately, they are not the fastest but if the unit is dead they will take care of it. I'll be sure to climb into it in the morrow with a wee dram, a set of pliers, screwdriver and a particularly large mallet! cichlidfan Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 (edited) @ Viper. If you already have it out of its case try . To check the PSU. At least he has a TX for which that procedure works. Corsair told me to do that but you need different instructions for the AX since all the wires are black. I have them somewhere...;) EDIT: In case someone needs the instructions for the AX series. 104th_Crunch Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I have house power that fluctuates and cuts off all the time. I lost a Power Supply before. Bought a battery back up and never had an issue since. It does more than a surge protector. It will regulate power better and if there any drop outs of power, even for a millisecond, it keeps power supplied form the battery. I don't even consider the battery backup as something to keep my PC going in case of a power outage. More of a power regulator.
EtherealN Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 In any event - a thought just occured. Could it be heat-related? Is there a 'auto-switch-off' mechanism that will shut it down automatically if things get too hot in the case? Yes, the processor and motherboard has such cirquits. PSU's might as well, I haven't actually looked at heat protections for them, just the pure volts and amps side. Such a protection would be less catastrophically symptomatic than a PSU or Mobo power system failure, though, in that you should be able to immediately reboot and still get a good POST and clean OS initialization.
