i was curious how this will work for quite some time now. got some strange looks from wife as i dragged our family TV upstairs tonight. while bigger might seem automatically better from what i can tell it is not that simple. i moved back untill i could not see individual pixels and then a bit more to alleviate pressure on the eyes. at that point the field of view is not that engulfing but still very nice. with that my flying setup was not planned around large TV. reaching out to Kbd/mouse was really distracting. frankly i think that 47 setup as shown is a bit much. it really calls for another monitor situated closer to display instruments and MFCDs. i think i will be looking at 42 inch set for next setup

feel free to show off your HDTV setup :)

PS,

i also tried out the 3d feature. discovered that my TV can do 1080P in 3d with up to 24 frame rate. dizziness and eye fatigue - check. low, barely sufficient in-game framerate @1080P (gtx470) - check. awkward 3d glasses not sitting comfortably with headset - check. all that for very subtle 3d effect experienced IMO barely worth it

Here's my setup, with my cousin at the controls. This is a Samsung 46" LCD. Really happy with the results (going from a 1024x768 projector).

hey hassata,

from the picture of your pit it seems that you sit very close to the screen. is it not hard on your eyes? what about after an hour or so flight? i would imagine you dimmed that screen somewhat to make it bearable that up close.

PS,

ordered that 42" LED TV newegg had for cyber-monday deal. going to be fun.

I'm sitting 140-150 cm away from my 42inch tv. I'll probably make pics this weekend. For a 47 inch, you should be sitting 2 meters away.

Dedicated triple monitor setup is too expensive for me, i use my telly and speaker setup for everything.

Here is a slightly older picture as I now have proper stands for the monitors. They are 3x42"

I dont find them blurry at all, an excellent upgrade from 3x24" monitors for flight simming. I have had to do all my FPS games on another computer though, I found them too large for that.

that is a very nice setup (i assume touchscreen up front?). with 42" TVs being affordable i hope i will eventually pick 2 more units (perhaps used craiglist) and do the same.

but being to large for FPS? hmm that is somewhat a concern. i guess i can always have a desk with ordinary monitor nearby and use connect that for battlefield and such...

For me, there is no strain at all. Brightness is at normal levels. Sitting that close actually approximates what I imagine sitting in a real pit would look like, and the immersion is great. That said, I think you'll be more than happy with a 42 inch (even with just a single display).

I often run with just the HUD display, which works well and gives me approximately 10 more FPS. I just wish ED would provide a 'bathtub' view so that you could actually see the wings and tail when looking in that direction.

I just bought a 39" LCD TV 1080p, but I'm taking it back to get a 40" LED one that has built in WiFi, as the TV will double as gaming monitor and TV. My pit will be in my room, with the wife's blessing, she was the one that said put it in there.

Well, that's kind of a catch 22 isn't it? Start a new thread and people bitch about not searching, or resurrect an old one and get chastised for threadomancy...

Well, since it's back, I'll add that I play on a 32" 1080p IPS screen and find it very nice. Viewing distance is about 3-4 feet.

Browsing old threads when you found this one eh? :)

No, used the search function to see what people said about LCD vs LED. Like I said, I just bought a LCD and taking it back to get a LED one. Wanted to know what people thought of them. I have a little time cause the store where i bought it from doesn't have the one I want in yet, I have 90 days to trade it in.

Lcd and led tvs are basically the same both use LCD to display color. The only difference is LCDs use a fluorescent lamp for backlight and leds use leds for backlight. So other than energy efficiency and maybe backlight life they are the same.

Oh, in that case I think they are good. You need to make sure that you have it in game mode although the exact name of that mode might vary from makers. PC mode is another possibility.

If the picture looks good then you are set, just make sure that it is running at the correct resolution and that the text on your desktop is nice and crisp to confirm this. you dont want black borders around the desktop and the display.

Lastly, and this relates to having the tv in game mode, make sure that there is no noticable lag, i.e. when you do something in game it actually happens right away on the tv without any delay.

There will be some as there is with everything but you just want to double check that you didnt get a model that is bad for this. Something like focus on firing the cannon and seeing that there isnt a tiny delay before it happens on screen. With todays TV's this shouldnt really be an issue though.

Only other comment on LCD vs LED. The LED can have better black levels and contrasts, this is because it can have better control on the backlighting and manage it in different regions, i.e. turn down the leds in areas with black on screen while keeping other areas on the screen at a lighter level. Once again this depends on the TV and if you just got a budget one for the computer you may not be missing out on a lot for LCD vs LED.

Don't you need a 'movie theater' license to have a TV over 35 inches where you live? :D
