The Black Sea is not "Land Locked" so in theory a Nimitz Class Carrier could sail into it...

However, If you look closely at the map provided, you'll find a couple of relatively low hanging suspension bridges that would have to be "dealt"with before it could happen.

Not sure about the height of Soviet, British or perhaps one of the US Assault carriers (Wasp Class LDH?) Might fit but I don't know.

Interesting point... It would seem that Carrier based assets used in a mission would be better depicted coming across the Black Sea from the Med rather than from a carrier in/on the Med itself.

(Now to figure our how much Fuel a Super Hornet can carry from the Med, flight time... loiter time...)

Where's the Carrier?

Anywhere you want..

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

also, i believe they would self remove any security zone around themselves and put themselves into the most strategically unsound position you could imagine.

Ya know on one hand I'd agree, However, we operate Carrier Batle groups in the Persian Gulf all the time and it's about the same size... Black Sea might be a little wider in spots, not sure. (I >THINK< there may be 3 Carrier Groups in the Persian at present...) However, that is against the threats poised by Iran and... Well Iran...So strategically we have the upper hand.

The Black Sea might be a little more "Roomy" but there be a whole different class of unfriendlies to deal with.

Actually, the russians don't have any right to limit who enters. They have to abide by the treaty just like everyone else.

Incidentally, one reason why the russians, in the soviet days especially, never made a "supercarrier" (though they did have concepts and plans), is that it was necessary to have the ship classified as a cruiser (or lighter) in order to use the treaty to pass freely through the bosphorus.

So a US supercarrier would, under the treaty and as far as I understand the currently upheld version, actually not be legally allowed to pass through. However, considering that Turkey is a NATO country, I don't consider it to be completely outside the realms of possiblity that they'd look between their fingers if it was needed. (I'm sure the americans would come with a good offer, or for that matter the Turks themselves might just be called to honor the pact and in that case treaties be damned.)

Would be interesting to know whether the bridges would have to be removed though, never thought about that aspect. But the Kuz has passed through quite a few times, though as mentioned being able to pass was part of it's design requirements even down to it's classification.

Ive been through the Suez on the Vinson. I never would have imagined such a stupid idea. Its the only time I've ever seen a carrier in a position to easily be killed. It was a little scary for a day or two. No more than 50-100 feet of water on each side I could swear. Its probably more but it looked darn close. I thought I could throw a piece of styrofoam and hit the coast.

But yeah they'll fit those things wherever the heck they want.
