Ramstein Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 (edited) I made some missions with weather.... and found several things out,,, the first one is funny... when it rains it rains everywhere, in the hangers it rains too... lolol  In wind it basically impossible to fly the P-51D, well at least landing it is... in one piece.. Well maybe with a slight breeze,,, but any more and forget it.. :joystick: I added a bunch of other aircraft and when the spawn in and out.. my computer freezes for a few seconds, which makes terrifying takeoffs... hopefully, someday I can get a computer that can keep up with the flight sims... it runs ok if there are not many objects spawning.... just can't have many thing happening at one time.. or have someone else host... graphics are very nice. Very hard to see and line up on targets, as I also thought it is very twitchy, and others have also told me it is twitchy, I will have to look into tuning the axis ont he joystick. It is very fast.... Edited May 21, 2012 by Ramstein ASUS Strix Z790-H, i9-13900, WartHog HOTAS and MFG Crosswind G.Skill 64 GB Ram, 2TB SSD EVGA Nvidia RTX 2080-TI (trying to hang on for a bit longer) 55" Sony OLED TV, Oculus VR
159th_Viper Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 In wind it basically impossible to fly the P-51D, well at least landing it is... in one piece.. Well maybe with a slight breeze,,, but any more and forget it.. No it's not. All it takes is practice and time :) Herewith quick track taking off and landing at 68% fuel, 30 knot cross-wind. Now I must state at the outset that it is definitely not the desired approach and should not be taken as such. I did not have TrackIr and as a consequence I severely cocked up the turn to finals.......In any event, the principle is sound, ie you can take-off and land fine in a wee bitty of a breeze. Mission: New Mission.miz Track: 30 knot crosswind take-off and land.trk Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Click me to commence your Journey of Pillage and Plunder! bluepilot76 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Is it Dynamic weather? A while back the dynamic weather was totally overdoing the turbulence effects. Havent tried it for a long time though. I fancy a challenge. off to try Vipers Track. I bet the crosswind limit is 15knots though..thats fairly normal. Doesnt mean it cant be done in more though... 159th_Viper Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 No, not dynamic weather. Left turbulence as I thought that I'd best stay at home with a 30knot crosswind AND turbulence :P Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? ED Team JimMack Posted May 22, 2012 ED Team Posted May 22, 2012 No, not dynamic weather. Left turbulence as I thought that I'd best stay at home with a 30knot crosswind AND turbulence :P At Duxford we use 20kts as the max for a cross-wind landing for Spits, P51s etc. Obviously it can be higher for other aircraft - Skyraider etc. Having problems? Just for kicks I flew another mission with a 30knot cross-wind and a factor of 5m/s *0.1 turbulence and whilst doable insofar as take-off and landing is concerned, there is absolutely no way on God's Green earth that I will even attempt to open the hangar doors in those conditions had I not been sitting in the comfort of my study behind a monitor. Here's the track: I mean, the wind has me everywhere but here, the landing necessitates a huge offset to the left in order to be blown onto the numbers and the turbulence on touchdown has me floating about everywhichway........ Track: Turbulence#1.trk Respect to the Pilots who are necessitated, through circumstance, to do just that for real. I would need a change of Flight-Suite and a cockpit valet! Svend_Dellepude Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 yesterday i took off and landed in 50 m/s headwind. its a challenge but not impossible. You just have to be quick to correct roll or slip caused by the wind. The P-51 just stands still in the air on landing. :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Win10 64, Asus Maximus VIII Formula, i5 6600K, Geforce 980 GTX Ti, 32 GB Ram, Samsung EVO SSD.
leafer Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Man, I wish I could visit Duxford. Do you let people sit in the pits? ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Smokin Hole Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 ...Respect to the Pilots who are necessitated, through circumstance, to do just that for real. I would need a change of Flight-Suite and a cockpit valet! Respect yes. But don't judge the difficulty by how its done in the sim, even a good one. The real world gives you a thousand senses to read and correct a challenging situation.
159th_Viper Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 The real world gives you a thousand senses to read and correct a challenging situation. Aye - I agree completely. The irritating niggle I however have with that is that no matter how many thousands of senses you have to read and correct, at some stage you will still only have one chance at correction, which in itself increases my respect ten-fold. Not sure I have the willingness nor the ability to attempt that for real, not at this stage of my life. Twenty years ago, most definitely! Now? Not so sure - I'm more comfortable behind my monitor thank you :) Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Click me to commence your Journey of Pillage and Plunder! PeterP Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 (edited) Sorry for OT but I had a very good laugh by imagining how this would look if someone makes a good British TV sketch about "Empty your pockets before entering the Cockpit !"... No,no Timmy! You must have misinterpreted JimMack.... He sure means : Put as much change (probably notes too - much more lighter and more convenient) as you can in your pockets. -Drive to Duxford. Leave the the content of your pockets at the manager, ...than you will see a cockpit from inside. And than drive home again(with empty pockets)! :D Yes - provided you contact one of the management, and empty your pockets of loose change, keys etc! Edited May 22, 2012 by PeterP

Headspace Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I plan on visiting Duxford next time I'm in the UK. I had to go to London the second time. But we will be going to Duxford the next time for sure.
bluepilot76 Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 When I was learning to fly I used to fly into Duxford and spend the whole day walking around whilst my instructor did air experience flights in a Dragon Rapide or Tiger Moth. Despite going several times in a week, I never got bored there. its a brilliant place. Another time years later my GF was asleep as we drove down the motorway, and she woke up as we pulled into the carpark (we were actually heading for France) Even she liked it. There is often a Spitfire or two flying there. Brilliant brilliant place! Technical Specs: Asus G73JW gaming laptop... i7-740QM 1.73GHz ... GTX460m 1.5GB ... 8GB DDR5 RAM ... Win7 64 ... TIR5 ...
