ED Team Yo-Yo Posted June 7, 2012 ED Team Posted June 7, 2012 I've had the privilege of flying in a '51 on the three occassions. Beside the rock solid feel of purposefulness, the strongest impression is the noise. My last flight was in Su Su, and Nazzi had the best noise-canceling headsets money can buy. They made it possible for us to talk almost effortlessly. I realized from prior experience, though, that something was missing. When I pulled out the ear cup I knew instantly what it was. The sound is, quite literally, deafening. Like simulated race cars (and even real ones), a huge part of the experience is the sound. What we enjoy now in the DCS P-51 is more like what I heard with noise canceling headsets. If there was a poll, I'd sure cast my vote in favor of having in cockpit engine sounds on an options slider. Just open a canopy! :) Or boost your amlifier to gain 100 dBa in your ears. To be serious, the sound level is not the thing I want to increase when flying P-51 for hours a day. I love my ears and when I put off the headphones and notice that the ears are "clogged" I know that it's a bad sign... :) The incockpit sound in DCS presumed to be heard through a helmet and a headset. So it arranged properly. Ніщо так сильно не ранить мозок, як уламки скла від розбитих рожевих окулярів There is nothing so hurtful for the brain as splinters of broken rose-coloured spectacles. sobek Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 love my ears and when I put off the headphones and notice that the ears are "clogged" I know that it's a bad sign... :) WTH, you get that from gaming? At that point, i would be seriously concerned about permanent ear damage. Take better care of your ears Yo-Yo, they are only going to get worse. :) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
sobek Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 I happen to have a ~75year old Singer in the house. Perhaps I should fire it up. If you rev that one up to 3000RPM, it's gonna sound angry too. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
ICDO Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 (edited) It's caused by the gunports 'fluting' with AoA at high speed and is one of the reasons I love watching a Pony being put through it's paces. Even heard a Mk IXe Spit do it once but it's really got to be thrown about to get a slight noise. Get's the hairs on my arms and the back of my neck up everytime... Sorry for sounding so abrupt but I've heard this as the reason before, but it's wrong. When I hear/read people stating it as a fact it get's the hairs on my arms and the back of my neck up every time. ;) No I don't have the real reason for the whistle. :) Here is a video link to a Miss America flyby. The whistle is there, even though it has the gun ports blanked out. See the image here of the blanked out gun ports, then listen the that beautiful whistle in the video. http://www.airportjournals.com/Photos/0710/X/0710013_9.jpg Edited June 7, 2012 by ICDO

Ali Fish Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 i think what we hear here is infact something else similar relating to an engine component rather than the screeching howl that clearly comes from high AoA manoevers Sorry for sounding so abrupt but I've heard this as the reason before, but it's wrong. Sharpe Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 (edited) ${1} I still miss that engine growl like sound you can hear here. Edited June 7, 2012 by Sharpe correction required

Blaze Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 The sound of the Mustang is just perfect, I'm hitting F3 all the time. Don't get me wrong the sounds are excellent and all, but they just don't sound quite like the P-51's I've heard countless times IRL. Too deep, but that's just my opinion. :) i7 7700K | 32GB RAM | GTX 1080Ti | Rift CV1 | TM Warthog | Win 10 "There will always be people with a false sense of entitlement. fatchance Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 (edited) I agree the sounds in the video posted are very much like the P51C I have heard a few times at the local airport. I'd like to see it as a mod. The stock sounds are very good and might be more accurate but the powerful and aggresive sound of the modded sound just seems more to my liking. Tailspin45 Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Dan Friedkin of the Horsemen said the inside the cockpit of a P-51 "sounds like an angry sewing machine." Best and most accurate description I've heard. :) Spot on! Best description I've heard too! Perfect! So a Cub would be, let's see, a happy coffee pot? Yes, see - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFYRKKffkF8 As in real life, the pilot can not hear it, only external watchers. It happens at a narrow band of speed and angle of attack. Having problems? TimmyD Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 (edited) Jim Mack, I can confirm that the whistle can be heard inside the aircraft. I know the Mechanic who works on Ferocious Frankie and when he goes up in the Dickie seat for trial flights he has told me it can be heard. This is what he told me: Hi Tim I will end ever to answer your questions. Yes you can hear the whistle inside but it only works when pulling positive G , Pilots always ware a Shute 10 fighter of flap is always used on take off but on a short runway is normal JK Edited June 21, 2012 by TimmyD [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/signaturepics/sigpic90244_1.gif[/sIGPIC]Windows 7 Ultimate 64 on OCZ SSD, (AM3)AMD955BE x4 3.2GHz - GPU AMD6950 x2Gb - 16Gb Ripjaw G-Skill DDR3 PC12800 1600MHz https://www.facebook.com/#!/FerociousFrankie
