rextar Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Guys am i missing something here but is the input for the tail wheel the rudder input? Just seems this bird wont turn on a dime at all! Thx Intel i5 3.2 ghz 8 GB crucial ram gtx 660 superclocked 2gb 500watt corsair psu win7 64bit extreme pro track ir5 Turtle beach x12
effte Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 The tail wheel is linked to the rudder via gearing, with limited throw. To unlock the tail wheel and let it swivel, push the stick forward. Try at low speed, and be ready to use differential braking to control the turn. Oh, and do post the track of your first attempt! :D 1 ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.

pixelpilot Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 (edited) my understanding was that the only influence you have over the tail wheel was to control its freedom of movement, ie +6 to -6 degrees with the stick held back or fully free with the stick held forward. I think the turning force actually comes from the air flow hitting the rudder, or by using differential braking. try stopping, hold one brake on and the stick forward and rudder hard toward the braked side then give a big ole' blip of throttle to send some wind against the rudder, it will turn on a dime, probably about 3 times. If i'm well wrong on this apologies, i've only had the game a few hrs and had a quick read of manual, This is just how i understood it and is how many tail draggers i've tried in FSX work. edit: actually just re-read the manual and it sounds like i'm wrong, gonna have to test it. HiJack Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Tailwheel is already discussed in this thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=88007 I even made some videos to show the problem. Look them up!

tintifaxl Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 But when will we experience it? Will we need to relearn the takeoff and landings?:pilotfly: Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.
HiJack Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Yes, you need to learn everything all over again :D :ooops (HJ)

HiJack Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Still haven't managed the landing part. :D You just need to hold the stick harder back when flaring than you think Jona, unlike the jet aircrafts. (HJ)
pixelpilot Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 surely the tailwheel glitch is only with it unlocked and wont effect anything but tight taxi control. my problems generally dont start untill the tail wheel leaves the ground. I can do three point take offs pretty easy but if i try to let the tail come up before i lift off i struggle. really not getting too consistant at landings yet at all.

This is not a tailwheel unlocked. This is P-factor and gyroscopic moment. Try to lift the tail when your speed is not less than 70-80 mph for 9300 lb plane. Then carefully push the stick a little bit beyond the central position (3-4 degrees to nose down I think). Be ready to apply right rudder as you are rotating but release it after the plane is at two points attitude. That's all... If you still encounter problems feel free to use TO assistant. It's not a cheat - it's your back sensitive to acceleration. It helps to counteract unwanted fast yawing movements. As you are training, gradually reduce TO assistant help using slider until you can TO without assistance. Daze Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 I still suck at taxiing in the P-51, I always end up spinning in circles. I just taxi across grass and everything now, much easier :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] First to Fight, First to Strike.
