At least most of the SAM launching vehicles can be regarded to work BVR and are therefore radar equipped. What is the sense to make them playable when only way to find and to aim at a potential target is by visual scope only? This means degrading a TOR SA-15 launcher to an AAA shooting with rockets...

Counter-question: why not?

Everything depends on how much work is required for each specific vehicle.

Here's a quick question: for radar sams, does the vehicle, occupied by a CA player, emit radiation as it would w/o that player controlling vehicle?

Yes, it should.

So I won't touch them anymore.

Controlling a vehicle that is constantly self-painting by it's own radar emissions but not giving me the benefit of that because of missing radar screen, keeping it's overall use to visible aiming is somewhat ridiculous.

I dont want to shut off the radar. I want to use it as designed for discovering, locating and fighting airborne targets at or beyond visual range.

@Etherealn, WHY NOT !,

I think because DCS is supposed to be doing a simulation. thats why not, if they cant do these things then they should stick to Aircraft sims.

Combined Arms isn't a SAM simulator yet, so realistic employment of radar guided SAMs will have to wait for future development. Until then, enjoy it for what it is; or, as you suggested, stay away from ADA units.

Well, dont get me wrong on that. I know CA at the moment isnt supposed to be on a simulation level like the other modules. I know it is more to offer at least some fun on the ground, meant as a surplus to the JTAC function.

I just wondered why they made SAM-launchers playable lacking any radar ability. And on the other hand I can not control even a simple truck or unarmed car.

I am almost sure the future will bring up some nice development for ground vehicles of all kinds. Time to hang on and wait for these...

I wish I knew the answer, but I don't.

All I know for sure is that the CA team has no shortage of vision or ambition. There isn't a large gulf between customer desire and developer intent.

It just requires patience, because it's a big task. When it isn't broken down into smaller, more manageable chunks, what you get is something like Fighter Ops. Nobody wants that.

It falls beyond words at how bad your comment is. As ED stated from the beginning of CA, the current beta of CA is a starting point. ED has big plans for CA, we only need to wait until it comes to fruition.

You are more than welcome to not purchase CA until it has all the fancy gizmos you are after.

All I knew is that the SAM radar wouldn't shut down as it should be when I switch them to HOLD, the launcher will not fire, but the SR will still emitting make them a easy target for the SEAD package. Hope this could be fixed in the next patch

CA is a great step forward in simulation. Now ground units can move with human intelligence, something that is very hard to achieve with AI. There are short comings, but these can be fixed.

DCS is centered on aircraft at the moment. It would be wonderful if we could have every single part of the sim environment detailed to excess, but then we would probably never see it release in our lifetimes.

It might also be difficult to convince people to open their houses so we can model them to DCS standards

amen to that.

We are, after all, in uncharted territory here. Nobody has done this before -- somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this. Name me another sim where you can fly the aircraft, or an opposing helo, or tanks/artillery on either side, or SAMs on either side. Not to mention the JTAC.

To your point, they could have left the Tunguska out, and not allowed it to be human controlled for now. But I suppose the advantage to putting it in is they get the benefit of us humans out there testing it (for what it is) in the beta-stage.

Give it time, CA is still in a beta phase after all. The pedigree of DCS World and other related modules shows ED's commitment to detail and I'm sure CA will get the same amount of polish in time.

Now that's a persuasive door-to-door salesman

Hell, maybe it is the neighbor -- hey buddy, I'm kinda tired of listening to your dog bark all night!! :D

EDIT: this reminds me of when we lived in Moscow -- I really really wished I had a good RPG to take out that $5000 pile of $&*t Lada with the $1000 car alarm that ran all freakin' night long. That a$$-hat neighbor would just let it run, never turn it off -- to hell with the 4000 other residents living in the half dozen 16-story apartment buildings surrounding the little courtyard it was parked in. Bastard. Great country with a lot of super people, and I got zillions of great memories, but that wasn't one of them.

OK, sorry for derailing thread.... but damn this is a cool sreenshot!!

why play AAA vehicles? you've obviously never used the german Gepard to shred a helo with its 35mm autocannons. Ohhhhh the glory.

Also, I remember reading in the interview with wags on simHQ that the guy who made SAMsim (this guy: https://sites.google.com/site/samsimulator1972/) said he was interested in working with ED to bring the ground vehicles in CA up to snuff.

So i guess what I'm saying is +1 to everyone who said just give it time it'll get there...
