Their CEO said last week that they aren't making any money on the rift. I assume that means they are breaking even perhaps but he didn't say they were losing money on them either. I think it is priced as competitively as they could make it until the technology catches on.

Is simvibe only for racing or can it be used for DCS and BMS flight sims?

 

Afaik the advantage of simvibe is that is translates telemetry data from sims into the buttkicker(s) in order to have the right vibrations at the right time regardless of what's happening sound wise. Only a few sims output such telemetry, namely Iracing. It'd be great if DCS would but, afaik, that's not the case.

 

Looking at specs from sources I have.

the 2 Screens + MiPI board alone are 475 Retail.

Then you have to add the optics and tracking system.

$599 is prolly selling with minimal prophits.

MS likely gave them a bunch of XBO Controllers to bundle for free, same with the bundled games.

 

Indeed that sound about right. I'm sure it's the best they could do too. But the hard truth is it's just not good enough for a lot of us. I hope screens will evolve quickly, Oculus Rift is now worryingly starting to only refer to long term plans in scales of 10+ years when asked about affordable market VR and wide adoption, taking smart phones as an exemple.

The pricey part is the MiPI boards.

 

So far no one manufactures Small DVI/HDMI screens for PCs.

 

They are using Cellphone screens and tech, hence the MiPI board.

 

A 1440P 60Hz LED MiPI screen is like 175, a 75Hz is about 200, and 90Hz is about 220.

 

The MiPI boards/chips to convert HDMI signal are stupid expensive, the higher the resolution and refresh rate, the more expensive.

Well people are complayning that the set is overpriced. I'm sure shortly after the release we'll see some detailed teardown with each complonent's value.

 

Palmer is claiming that there ia a lot of custom hardware inside the deal is a steal. Time will tell...

 

Overinflated shipping/taxes (Hello Australians) is another story.

So does anyone know if the consumer version will have some way to 'peek' at the outside world without having to lift up the OR? It's great having a clickable cockpit but getting my hand back to the mouse off the HOTAS has me on the fence about picking this up. Anyone know or know from their DK2 experience?

No ability to peek in the consumer version but the foam could probably be cut around the nose if absolutely needed.

 

I currently use a trackball instead of a mouse. I have it connected to my collective as my controls and seat are away from my PC. It's very easy to use in the rift with clickable cockpits. No fumbling to find it like you may have with a mouse.

I dunno about anyone else, but I can type and reach for my mouse without looking.

 

 

I dont see how anyone that plays PC games at least 8 hours a week can be a single finger look down typer.

That a smart idea with the trackball. I'm sure its a hell of a lot easier than pushing a mouse around. Plus Im sure reptition of locating it while in VR will get easier with practice. May have to channel my inner Karate Kid!

ok, i have never used DCS and rift, but hearing this comment, maybe its possible to use leap motion as a mouse substitute?

 

so on a 2d desktop, i can use a mouse and move a the little yellow cross hair, i would assume in trackIR also.

 

so for the most part in gearVR, users use a non-movable reticle at the center of the your vision as your cursor, in which you look directly at something to choose once you tap on the side touch pad.

 

obviously, this wouldnt work in DCS, it would be tedious to move your head at each button, were in the normal desktop situation we just look straight into an area while moving the cross hair cursor about..

 

im wondering if leap motion can be used in DCS with the rift, to move the yellow cross cursor about... Though i dont know how the stereoscopy (3d-ness) would work, once your dealing past center point of things... :/ but then again, if your using a trackball with the rift, i see that leap motion is possible.. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

 

(BTW FRUSHEEN, do you have photos of your setup? not many have collectives!!! i am curious to see!! )

Stay away from the Leap Motion Controller. It's garbage. I've got one for FSX and FlyInsideFSX and the control just isn't there. Frustrating at best.

 

If there was any functionally that COULD be added for the DK2 or CV1 in DCS with the Leap is make it a passthru camera. That function in FlyInsideFSX is great.

 

Really helps me find my beer.

I've no experience with leap. If it can emulate a mouse then I'm sure it could be made to work. I've read mixed reviews about its accuracy though. I'm more inclined to wait for some form of hand tracking to be added to the rift SDK and implemented by ED.

 

I've no updated pics of my G-Seat setup as it's still a work in progress. Here is a picture I took early on in the construction before adding the belts and flaps. You can see the trackball on the collective head.

My hang up isn't so much typing and clicking. I think muscle memory will help get you to those.

 

Mine is writing. I am a note taker. I write down 9 lines. I write down key things to remember, etc. Not being able to write and refer to notes for checklists, etc is a big deal to me unfortunately.

VR isn't without it's limitations and that's certainly one of them.

 

The reading items aspect could be partly solved by improvements to the kneeboard system (making it easier to integrate your own pdfs for example) but the writing side would remain problematic.

The problem with typing and clicking is particularly problematic specifically because muscle memory is hardly involved. We're good at remembering exact force and pressure required, we're terrible at remembering distances and length. For exemple driving with a brake pedal that has only slight linear resistance would be very hard.

 

About your issue, there are ink pens that also records what you write and instantly translate them into PDF through bluetooth, it's then just a matter of copying it into the kneeboard. There are other ink-less pencil that can "write" on any surface to modify or note anything on the document you want. There are all kind of different electronic pencil that offer some solution to that problem thought I'm not sure how exactly that would work for you.

i like using the collective too, but mine doesnt have a throttle control grip like yours.

question for you.

i just might pull out the leap motion to see if it has gotten better enough for usage..

That would be great. Touch typing is no problem for me- if I could just actually type onto the kneeboard.. that would be great.

It would be even better if important information like that was automatically entered into the kneeboard.

E.G. JTAC sends you a 9-line and it will automatically be added into your kneeboard.

Yes I can use the trackball in the rift and I use Vaicom for radios so I seldom need a keyboard.

 

Frusheen how do you like the ctek pedals? I'm on the cusp of ordering them myself. Hard to find any recent reviews of their products online.

 

Mine are a good few years old now and have held up well. I modified them as there was slop or play in the axis which I shimmed out. I also switched out the control board as it was only 10bit. I think the new models now use a 12bit controller. They are well made but honestly I regret not having gone komodosim all round. I just hadn't the budget at the time though so as a cheaper alternative they work very well. The komodosim cyclic is a much more polished piece of kit though.

Ah I read your review somewhere else as one of the few I could find about ctek maybe on hovercontrol I can't recall? The problem with komodo is their delivery times and the fact that they want 50% up front. Paying $1000 now for three USB controllers that won't be delivered until July or August just doesn't sit well with me as a customer. Ctek is made in America which is another thing that I like. The problem is that I just can't find anyone that owns these things! Everyone that owns komodo loves them but that English pound is just so strong and never drops in value to the dollar which makes them a good 15-20% more expensive than ctek not to mention the wait times...
