Obviously this is hard to perform in the first place but it seems like I may be having some extra issues. It seems regardless of how smoothly I hook up with the boom, I stay latched for a maximum of 2 seconds, every time, before I DC. Smooth/rough contacts alike, the disconnect time is the same regardless. Anyone else have this problem? Am I omitting a button or am I STILL not level/fluid enough? Thanks for your help

Btw, there is an unwritten rule that after 27 failed attempts, plus or minus 3, you are permitted to back off, count to 10 and then...

I was feeling hopeless myself at one point because I was putting so much effort into it and I couldn't stay connected for even a few seconds.

 

Until I read something about changing the response curves on the joystick. I put both pitch and roll at about 30-40 smooth curve and suddenly I could stay connected. Shortly after I had first complete refuelling without disconnecting.

 

I'm using X-52 so that might had something to do with it. :-)

Just press the pinky button on your stick/insert on the keyboard.

 

Yes. Using stick pinky button is much easier than moving that grey Air Refuel Control Lever back and forth.

 

Until I read something about changing the response curves on the joystick. I put both pitch and roll at about 30-40 smooth curve and suddenly I could stay connected. Shortly after I had first complete refuelling without disconnecting.

 

I'm using X-52 so that might had something to do with it. :-)

 

You can also try changing the curvature of the throttle.

Was this on multiplayer? I have seen a bug where the tanker calls disconnect 2 seconds after you connect no matter how well you fly.

Once I had a hard contact with the tanker and the tanker lost its whole left wing -> lotsa smoke. I thought the tanker would dive into the sea as usual, but it just kept flying. No problem, one wing left seems to be enough :confused:. I decided to follow the tanker and see if something's gonna happen.

 

It took maybe 15 minutes and then the captain of the tanker (still spreading smoke and flying with one wing only) told he is gonna RTB. I followed the tanker as it landed. No problem with landing at all. On the runway I tried to overtake the tanker. However, I hit the invisible left wing (which somehow was still there...) and we both exploded. :D

Sometimes this happens, but usually it is a simple matter of clicking the pinky button to reset your refueling status. Then refueling continues, usually without incident.

 

BTW, the tanker seemed to be a real "fast mover" compared with my A-10C. I almost lost it because A-10C is so damn slow.[/Quote]

 

Yeah, the tanker can move quite a bit faster than an A-10C, and in real life, part of the job of a tanker pilot is to match speeds for the airframe that is being refueled. The KC-135 pilot has tables that he will dig out to find what speeds are supposed to be flown for whatever type of aircraft he is going to be fueling. So IRL this really isn't an issue, however in the sim it is modeled incorrectly, so it is up to the mission editor to assign the right speeds to the KC-135.

As a matter of fact it is happening in multiplayer. I'm doing Dragons training pack, running the normal free flight mission in MP by myself so it will work. I'm assuming no fix for this bug? Does this bug effect everyone or just the host? I also tried it on the free flight stormy mission with the same results. Thanks for your responses everyone!

Thanks for all of the other advice as well by the way. The nose wheel steering/insert function after disconnection is definitely something I wasn't aware of for the first few hours of my attempts haha! Certainly won't forget now though

I tried this as well, it disconnected me (physically as well as by audio) immediately and says 'transfer complete'.

A reference here that states an ORBIT speed of 255 KIAS: ATP-56(B) Part 5, Annex ZB. But the sentence continues: "to facilitate the rendezvous slowdown to the A-10 AAR speed" suggesting that the contact speed is actually slower.

 

Then there's this: Altus KC-135 and C-17 AIR REFUELING STUDY GUIDE which indicates an AR speed of 220 (TAS, I believe, since the other tables seem to be TAS). Not sure about accuracy as this is from a "virtual" AF.

I have to clarify my previous message a bit, so you don't have false impression: The tanker speed was just right when I was refuelling. But after telling he's gonna RTB, the tanker speeded up considerably and I couldn't keep up.

We just covered A2A Refueling in this month's PC Pilot magazine.. Might want to pick it up and have a browse of it.. (if you take it into the bathroom like George did on Seinfeld..you're gonna have to buy it..)
