The precision attack weapon was evaluated during several trials and test-firings with the UK's future Apache AH-64E fleet. The trials validated a prior UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) study contract that confirmed integration was expected to be low risk, MBDA said in a statement. Fully telemetered missiles were test-fired to demonstrate the weapon's semi-active laser (SAL), dual mode SAL / millimetric wave (mmW) and fully autonomous mmW guidance modes. Boeing flight test engineer Mesa AZ said: “The mmW autonomous shot from a moving and banking platform against an off-axis target with the missile hitting the MBT turret ring was the most aggressive shot I have seen in my 30 years of the Apache programme.” The weapon was tested against tanks and pickup trucks in hovering, manoeuvring and banking scenarios. "UK MoD is working together with MBDA to develop the missile capability the British Army requires.” UK MoD FMC-WECA complex weapons senior responsible officer Dai Morris said: “UK MoD is working together with MBDA to develop the missile capability the British Army requires. “Brimstone is part of a family of capabilities, which in addition to the needs of the warfighter, will be aimed at delivering wider benefits, including pan-platform utility, stockpile resilience and better overall value for money for defence.” The programme was funded by a UK MoD contract that was awarded to MBDA in September 2015. The contract covers a range of environmental and sensor compatibility tests, as well as functional and avionic trials to demonstrate new platform software and functionality.

The test of the networked weapon was conducted by teams from MBDA and BAE Systems in England and involved the Spear transitioning to powered flight and completing a series of maneuvers before reaching its pre-planned point of impact. "The success of this trial demonstrates the inherent flexibility of the Typhoon aircraft as a platform in supporting such a crucial phase of testing on this next generation missile -- and further cements the strong relationship between BAE Systems, MBDA and the UK customer," said Paul Stone, Typhoon Product Development and Future Capability manager for BAE Systems. "The weapon operated exactly as expected during the trial and we are delighted to have supported such important step in further development of SPEAR using Typhoon." The Typhoon is made by a consortium that includes BAE Systems and undergoes continual capability upgrades. It has been designated as the test aircraft for trials and development of the Spear. The Spear missile is being developed to meet Britain's Selective Precision Effects At Range Capability 3 requirement for F-35 Lightning II aircraft, with the potential to equip the Typhoon. Spear is for precise engagement of long-range, mobile, fleeting and re-locatable targets in all weathers. It is fitted with the latest generation multi-sensor seeker. Eurofighter said the test firing from the Typhoon was the culmination of trials performed by missile-maker MBDA to prove the weapon is ready to move to the next stage of development work.

The Ministry of Defence said the new order would see F-35s operated by the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy start to use an updated version of the missile beyond 2022. The order for additional ASRAAM’s follows an announcement last September of a £300 million deal with missile maker MBDA to design and build an initial batch of updated weapons. Typhoon and Tornado combat jets are already cleared to carry the current version of ASRAAM. The updated variant of the missile is expected to enter service on the Typhoon in 2018, the MoD said in a statement. British F-35s will carry the current version of ASRAAM until 2022 at which point it will be taken out of service. The first F-35s are scheduled to be introduced into service with a British air force squadron in 2019. Royal Navy jets onboard the new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth are planned to become operational the following year F-35 flight integration trials on ASRAAM have already begun in the USA. Integration of Raytheon's Paveway IV precision guided bomb is also underway on the jet. The new ASRAAMs will be built at a new £40 million manufacturing facility now nearing completion in Bolton, north west England.

Its new version will be manufactured at MBDA’s Bolton, Lancashire site. It has the same performance characteristics as the current configuration, but benefits from an MBDA seeker – a Raytheon one is currently used – that includes its own cooling system instead of using the aircraft’s. Then again, I've never launched a rocket, let alone recovered one, so who knows. :music_whistling: Just for comparison, Blue Origin's current "New Shepard" should by roughly one third the height of the Ariane 5.
