EtherealN Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 No, you don't fly close formation in combat. That's suicide. However, there is utility in flying close formations in order to hide your numbers. IvanK Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 (edited) Try using this: it should scatter them around enough so you can bug them separately. Thats a classic response .... if only we could :) As to close formation well its been used a lot by the inferior types when going head on against things like the Eagle. The transition from a close blob to confetti, spirals, hooks etc all designed to screw the sort and get in close unobserved.... sometimes it works especially in the days when the BVR threat was the AIM7 ... then those pesky AMRAAMS came along and added to the difficulty. Crescendo Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 (edited) Jokes aside, I think this is a legitimate question. If the VSD in TWS mode is displaying multiple discrete targets then you should be able to select them individually, even if they are in close formation. It can be frustrating using the cursor to select indivudual targets when the cursor is so large and indisciminate. I can't believe that there isn't a button you can press that cycles through each TWS contact on the VSD, thus allowing you to select and bug whichever contact you please. Surely the real F-15 radar must have a feature like this as it would demonstratively reduce the pilot's workload in close formation situations. Chalk it up to simplified FC3 avionics and higher priorities I suppose, but it would be nice if ED implemented a cycling feature. It should be a relatively simple task for a programmer. Vekkinho Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Thing is there is no "MFD zoom" option simulated with F-15C as it is IRL. This allows magnifying MDF display to cursor size making it easier to declutter close formation contacts. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
GGTharos Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 The real F-15C doesn't use an 'MFD zoom', IIRC. They used to have it, but they removed it. They probably just step the targets instead. Vekkinho Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 They probably just step the targets instead. Can U explain what does it mean and how can it be done? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
GGTharos Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 It means that the fire control computer assigns a priority to each target, and 'moves' the TDC from target to target with the push of a button on the stick or throttle. IvanK Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 As Kenan implied there is a thing called '"RAID" mode in the real jet. RAID mode allows you to look inside a big blob and try to breakout multiple contacts it does have restrictions on use.
GGTharos Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Yep, long removed now in favor of other modes :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Cali Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 (edited) Is it moddeled in FC? Nope, if it was, that'll be another thing the flanker boys would be crying about. I love using it and the zoom function in BMS. @ Crescendo, the best we can do in FC2 was to get closer... lunaticfringe Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 As Kenan implied there is a thing called '"RAID" mode in the real jet. RAID mode allows you to look inside a big blob and try to breakout multiple contacts it does have restrictions on use. Raid Assessment Mode was deleted from the APG-63 software. It will show in older versions of the Weapons Employment Manual (such as the one you're referencing from the mid-80s, based on the concerns you raised about the positioning of the elevation numbers). This mode no longer exists.
Frostie Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Nope, if it was, that'll be another thing the flanker boys would be crying about. Probably with some justification considering Russian birds are still waiting for TTI timers, multi targeting TWS for 29-S, and the fact that they too can most probably target step in TWS. But for now lets just concentrate on the new models and cockpits. ;) "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. But in your post "the fact that they too can most probably target step in TWS." doesn't mean much without any proof. Some easy things have been messing from the 15 since the beginning and there is proof of these features, not a guess or it should have it....proof. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED

To claim a portion of the community as cry babies when asking for parity in updates is a bit selfish. Russian fighter updates are non existent at this point and if it was common knowledge that they can tgt step (which they do automatically in TWS at the moment), then not implementing it or any other update in parity with the F-15 being updated would create the disgruntled vibe you label as cry babies. I would love to see a fully modeled AN/APG-63(v)1 but you can't build a house with one wall. If you're still not clear on the point, i'm not claiming target step should be implemented i'm taking exception to your assumptions of 'another thing to cry about' without reason, as i'm not clear what the other things were. :) "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'.
