Adding to the listmania, what would be your pick for military aircraft of 2012? I do not mean an aircraft launched in 2012, but an aircraft that definitely made its mark this year.

For me, MV-22 Osprey tops the list: the Marines pulled this challenge of and I think they finally got it going. It brings something radically new to the table, and if there is one aircraft I would like to take a ride in, it would be this one.

But maybe the most important were the transport aircraft like C-130J and C-17: absolutely world-class performers.

Nominees for 'failure of the year' must be include NH-90 and Airbus A-400M, examples of how to botch things up in every conceivable way. Since Belgium has both on order, I wonder when we will ever see them in service. Remember in 2011 this prize went of course to the MRA4 Nimrod, leaving the competition behind by a large margin.

Two crashes in one year, and i think the championship should belong to F-22 :vertag::vertag::vertag:

I agree and at that price too.

I think the success of the year should go to either the AH-64 or the AC-130 because they kill more people in 5 minutes than many other aircraft kill in a lifetime.

Second I think of the MQ-9 Reaper, that killed even more bad guys this year than the F-104 and the Harrier ever managed to kill their own pilots combined.

.

Yes, yes, the more people it kills the better it is.

tflash I hope you're humane enought to edit your post...

MiG-29K. Lots of work on that bird has been done and it is finally going to get to Russian Navy.

Deterrence.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Is it planned to fly from Kuznetsov also? That would indeed be transformational, since SU-33 has only limited A/G weaponry.

The scale of wars we have seen, I think its been working....

But in those wars they're used for killing people. Since deterrence is a very abstract non-measurable parameter, it's generally the performance in those wars that counts and acts as a deterrent.

The Nimrod MRA4 was a history of failure but in the closing stages the only failure was on behalf of the banks. The aircraft finally worked and a training system was even delivered for it. The UK government just decided they didn't have the cash for it and stated the historical failure of the project as a reason. By mid-2008 the only changes still going through were daft shit like more comfortable headrests.

IIRC the V-22 killed more men that any other aircraft in its commissioning and you give it AC of the year?. Sure it has come along leaps and bounds but its been paid for in blood.

I'll vote for the PAK-FA.

No opinion on the military side of things.

On the civil side. After many delays and a lot of money. I think the 787 has earned top marks. It has set a new standard of efficiency and comfort. A few minor problems but it has proven itself so far.

The airbus 380 has had a rough year. From engines catching fire, to cracks being found in the wing spars on low hour aircraft. I think airbus has taken a beating for this. This may have been over a year ago now. It is still fresh in my mind. Bottom score.
