Why didn't they just buy some slightly used C-17's give them a new paint job and save themselves a whole lot of trouble?
Because, this way, they created thousands of new jobs. And because they have technology, financial and human resources to do it.

Why change something that works.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

And also, don't make the mistake of equating the exterior of an aircraft with "copy". Having copied the configuration means only just that - you've copied the configuration - you still have most of the development work ahead of you.

China has not only copied American C-17, but also IL-76, C-2, C-5, because the Chinese aircraft has also two wings, a few engines under the wings, and a tail with two wings! I bet they also copied the interior of those foreign planes, because it probably has some place for humans and other empty space for cargos! What a copycat is that! And what a genius am I, figuring all these out from just a few pictures!

I wonder what engines it has?

Probably rolls royce copies since there are rolls royce subsidiaries in china building the original items.

EDIT: Looking at the clearer footage above it looks like they are using russian engines in them (at least for now).

My humble apologies if I've offended you,I'm sure that the similarities with the C-17 are strictly coincidental. How thoughtless of me to think China would want to copy anything so inferior when they have their own cutting edge Aeronautical design:doh:

I saw that you have tried once, you deleted it, and this is your second attempt. It must have been difficult for you to figure out an intelligent response. But still, I see only failed sarcasm but nothing new there. Try harder.

TBH, they may or may not be copies, but more than half of the worlds militaries can only dream of having a budget to create such "copies"

also its smart spending, to just use a proven concept then to throw bucket loads of money at it just for the sake of originality, especially when its not a beauty contest.

Did you show us this pic to show the obvious - that similar tasks often lead to simillar design:

(Just as well none of those animals came from China, or someone would have accused them of doing a direct copy...)

It's like in the good old days when some people accused the MiG-25 of being an F-15 copy. :D
