In that same movie, however, don't they attack a second time from the same direction because "they'd never expect them to go through that again?"

I know- I'm kidding... I think they get shot down and a skyraider kills Dafoe. Oh- and a SAM launched into a church. Oops.

OP- glad that you were able to enjoy some success... these can get pretty frustrating if you don't get the occasional victory-

The Su-25 is really the only SEAD aircraft available at the moment. If there are too many air defenses in the mission to destroy, then you have to use masking and defensive maneuvers to defeat them.

Most lost range SAM can be destroyed with a pop-up attack from low altitude. I do this with the P-51 from time to time, which can be quite exillerating. However, with AAA or SHORAD defenses close by this would not be advisable. Masking becomes your only option.

All of the campaign missions are designed to be accomplished a certain way. They don't make them unbeatable, you just have to anaylze the mission first to determine what the best tactic is going to be.

Some of the F-15C missions seem impossible until you learn what the RED A-A weapon limitations are. The AI is predictible which equals death in combat. Prediction requires experience, which takes awhile to get unforturnately.

Learning how to react to certain threats can save your butt. If you are attacked by a SAM you didn't know was there, you are toast. But defending a SAM that you are expeecting to fire at you is pretty simple. You'll want to watch some SAM defense videos on youtube.

IR sams are deadly in any situation. Staying out of range is really the only soultion. Strelas and MANPADS are always the ones that get me, but I usually don't die, just crippled and RTB if I'm lucky. Killing them takes practice and requires that learn how to spot them. The Strelas and tanks look the same from 10K feet, but tanks are usually in groups with MANPADS and the Strela and Shilkas are usually by them themselves and spreadout, often hidden by structures and trees by presky mission builders.

While there is some good advice in this thread it suprises me that the most important tactic has been overlooked. .... yes my friend you need to wear your lucky pants.

May I quote myself?

dont expect to much:

calculated livetime for a german CAS (G91, Alphajet, early Tornado) pilot in a WWIII szenario would have been around 7 !! minutes....

All this will help to reach above mentioned 7 minutes.

Pray for gods help and luck to last longer.smilewink.gif

You engage and destroy Long Range SAM's with teh P-51? Awesome. I want to see that in a vid. Would be great footage seeing youd estroy a S-300 with a P-51 :)

Go in close, and when you think you are too close, go in closer.

As with the Blackshark, my advice is to keep your head out of the cockpit and constantly scanning the area around you. Constantly. You will see threats before you meet your maker.

Keep your head down and it's fine. With 1 Mustang you'll get tagged pretty quickly if the mission-designer is clever and places protection. With two P-51's in a Wagon-Wheel over the target it could get interesting. With three Mustangs in a Wagon-Wheel the ground-staff will be in a heap of .50cal-induced misery, even worse if your first run is with rockets.

Good Fun :D

Nice flying Viper.

I find well placed Tors, Strelas, Tunguskas and Shilkas usually put a stop to this outrageous fun. :D

I tried to get my head out of the cockpit but the door was in the way, so I opened it and stuck my head out but then I could only see to my left and the noise of the engines drowned out the missile coming from my right. I did see some threats to the left though, just not the one to the right that sent me to meet my maker, so I guess I can't sue you for bad advice :P

I can never see anything with my bare eyes, I have to use the Shvkal zoomed in (have to know where they are first though, so I can stop outside their range and find them) and even then it's tricky unless it's a moving vehicle. I fired four missiles at what I think was actually a large bush earlier. :music_whistling: That was actually my best mission so far, as I managed to hit stuff (other than bushes) and didn't get shot down within minutes :)

I haven't seen anyone here mention using mission assets - If you've got allies in that particular mission, they're usually a HUGE help, especially against things like enemy fighters and the bigger SAMs. So make sure to get on the radio if they're available.

Also, just be a huge coward. People call it "flying conservatively" or "terrain masking" but thinking of it as pure cowardice always helps me remember to actually do it. Once I really started hanging back and looking out the window until I was absolutely SURE where everything was that could hurt me and what was going on, I finally ended up consistently completing missions.

And the value of Tacview cannot be overstated. It's like the pure Platonic ideal of debriefing, plus it always makes me feel like I just beat an Ace Combat level.

Nothing cowardly about it, it's called flying smart.

I don't think self preservation should be called cowardice.

Its one thing to be courageous in the face of danger but trying to avoid danger altogether is always best IMO.

Still, I understand your point. Thanks for sharing.

(I only fly ka-50 so not sure how relevant to other craft this is)

Do you use numpad/ and numpad* to "zoom in" your eyes? You'll be able to keep your head up and out the window to keep your SA up while scanning for targets. Once I spot the dot, then it's HMS to bring it into the shkval and ID.

I do need to use that more. I used to have them mapped to the rocker on my throttle but since I found that it was too difficult to use the twist-stick to control rudder whilst also trying to move the stick directionally, I remapped the rudder to the rocker, so I need to find some other buttons to map the zoom keys to.
