Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 If your are in the uk and use adsl internet service from any isp, if you are connected to the internet at the moment then do not sign out, as most likely you will not be able to sign back in, as BT's Authentication servers are down and have taken the majority of the uk adsl service with it. This will not affect you if you are already online. Do not reset router. Do not log off. Do not Disconnect anything. Do not turn pc off if you have a usb adsl modem If you want to stay connected dont do any of the above 4 options, as any one of them will cut you and chances are you will not be able to sign back in.

504 Wolverine Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 After 3 months of hell with BT's DSL 1Mb connection I went with NTL's 3Mb cable service and have not had one problem in the past 6 months. Also they are boosting their speeds up to 10Mb in the new year. :D
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Its nothing to do with the isp, every isp in certain areas of the uk was affected. as adsl service is run threw bt exchanges. I think everything is ok now, but i dunno, it started at about 5pm last night and the story goes that 3 servers or exchange went down and within seconds the majority of the uk adsl service was messed up, if you were already connected then cool, it was just signing into the service that was affected, so people kept getting auth failures and couldnt connect. probably over by know, but i dunno. am with wannadoo, and i never had probs, but i phoned em cuz i needed to reboot my router last night, and they recommend that i didnt do it as they werent able to say if i could reconnect. bt dude i know, said it was crazy at bt last night. bt gonna be fined for this one, isp's just be lineing up to kick the crap out of it. as for blue yonder handing out free 4mbit, 2-3 months ago, wanadoo or freeserve as i like em to be called, handed me a big fat 8mb upgrade for jack :) there doing it to all there customers now.

Cosmonaut Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 WTF? i want that connection! LOL.. Well it does come down from two hundred thousand but if the file is around 30 or 40 megs and on an unrestricted site then by the time it gets to 30 thousand I have the file which is like 1 to 4 seconds. For a file like 1 or 2 gigs I can average anywhere between 400 or 650kb/s it depends on the site. The cool thing is that I have no limits either I can download as much as want for as long as I want. I've never had dsl, I'm on cable, but I've heard cable is faster I wouldn't know and it really doesn't matter as long as you get unrestricted downloads and/or you’re happy with the service. Cozmo. Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 ya, i am with freeserve/wannadont, and they cap everyone at 30gb max, but since i been with em for 5 years, i get unlimited downloads :D i wud of died if they capped me when they started capping everyone else. 30gb = 1 - 2 days of download, imagine doing that and not being able to use inet for 28 days til next months quota came round. AINT GONNA HAPPEN
504 Wolverine Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 thank god im on super reliable NTL 10mbit cable !! :) You updated already? ya lucky ** :icon_lol: they are updating existing 3 Mb customers first starting with the North of England and gradually working round the country. Hopefully I'll be due the upgrade before the end of the year.

Cosmonaut Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 When you game online does that register as downloading? ..so you'd be taking away from your monthly quota or is online gaming not counted. I have no idea how much info in terms of file size is being transferred when gaming over the internet but if it does eat into your monthly quota then that would make me a little paranoid. Cozmo. Pilotasso Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 quota is expended whenever you request downstream information, download, gaming or surfing alike. Upstream (upload) is usualy unlimited. Be carefull controlling your transfers. .
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 quota is expended whenever you request downstream information, download, gaming or surfing alike. Upstream (upload) is usualy unlimited. Be carefull controlling your transfers. RGR basically if you are connected and not even using the internet, you will still be using your quota, as packets of info still travel back and forth from your pc to the net. Although its just tiny amounts, you are still using it up. every single thing you do over the net, surf, speak on TS, gaming or just being connected but not even having a browser open, will use up your quota. to be honest tho, 30gb a month or even half that is perfect for people who dont download that much. but who game alot and surf alot, as you would never ever use 15gb gaming 24/7 for a full month, and you could add about 30,000+ web sites to that if you were just browsing. but who doesnt down load like carazy when there is soooo much freebies to be had off the net. ;) :p ISP's who cap suck balls and thats the majority of them in the uk :(
