rrohde Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Since the DCS banner on the main page shows a drone so nicely doctored it, isn't it time for us to get out hands on some of these? MQ-1 Predator or MQ-9 Reaper surely would be nice to control... Thoughts? KLR Rico Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 ^^ (hits the like button) :D Maybe you could just fly the A-10C in full screen with the hud and MFD's. ;) i5-4670K@4.5GHz / 16 GB RAM / SSD / GTX1080 Rift CV1 / G-seat / modded FFB HOTAS
BRooDJeRo Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 (edited) LOOOOOOOL But yeah, seems somewhat weird too. Go to the office in the morning, step into the simroom, fly around and what not in afghanistan for 8 hours and be home for diner again... Sounds very boring. Edited February 15, 2013 by BRooDJeRo

Britchot Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 There was a thread with a similar request and I think it's a good idea but not it's own sim. I think a UAS interface in Combined Arms would be appropriate. Basically, you'd be an armed AFAC. The interface is pretty much like Rico mentions, a HUD with a forward looking camera, a moving map display, and a payload video like the TGP in the A-10C. The thrill would be a lot similar to playing JTAC in CA with 2-6 bomb drops or missile shots, to each their own. Peabot Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I'm a UAV pilot and I can tell you right now that you will be bored to tears. LOLZ!! So basically you have a screen and joystick and do the same thing we do here for fun, except you have a real plane that you are controlling remotely and get paid for it? What a blast!! Serious question, do you get satellite lag or interference in the middle of flying a UAV, and when it does does it have a pre-set course that it flys on gyro nav or something until connection is reestablished? Im thinking GPS nav wont work as well if you lose signal to it.

No interface per se but you can control and target air units from the F-10 map in the next update to CA. 104th_Maverick Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) Serious question, do you get satellite lag or interference in the middle of flying a UAV He will do yes, provided what system he is actually crewing. Perhaps some of the newer advanced UAV's have managed to get around this problem but I'm not sure. A member posted a link to a very good documentary on UAVs that divulges some of the vulnerabilities of such a system talking to satellites for command inputs relayed from somewhere else. You get a very good demonstration of what happens when he loses the signal.... pretty sketchy stuff! bn880 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Just wanted to say they're not "drones" but UAVs. :p UGVs etc. (it's becoming the same as helicopter vs chopper though with how often it's used in the media) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Pyroflash Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Just wanted to say they're not "drones" but UAVs. :p UGVs etc. (it's becoming the same as helicopter vs chopper though with how often it's used in the media) Actually the common terminology for it now is Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). But yeah, people saying drones kind of irks me. Like they don't have people running them or something. Also that video is broken. The user got banned. If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.
bn880 Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Yeah, that encompasses the aerial systems, but there are also ground and sea unmanned vehicles. So basically Unmanned Systems (US) :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
