Video showing my problem: user missions not ploading

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Whew, finally got this problem sorted, thanks to the fine help of others here in this thread!

So what was happening was I was not able to load custom user created missions and I was not able to even save any missions I created in the Mission Editor.

In the Mission editor I would go to save my created missions and it would deny me access to saving the file saying "can not open file for writing...'

The other issue was I could not open any custom SP mission as it would instantly dump me back to the main menu.

Well here's how I corrected these two heartbreakers...

Mission Editor not saving problem Solution:

1.

I had to uninstall and delete all DCS World left over files and then reinstall by right clicking the installer and choosing "Run as Admin" :weight_lift_2:

- WARNING...be sure to first deactivate and backup save games and other important folders /missions/skins/etc before deleting leftover folders

After re-installing using "Run as Admin" option, I can now save user created missions in the Mission Editor.

ALSO...VERY IMPORTANT STEP...

I must now run the game by right clicking the game launch icon and choosing "Run as Admin" to allow saving of Mission Editor Created Missions.

***Also you can make the game icon start with Admin Privileges by right clicking game launcher, choose properties, then compatibility button, then check Run with Admin Priv and then you shouldn't have to right click the game launcher anymore to run in Admin Mode.

2.

Problem #2 - Can't load/run any user created missions.

Well this one is silly. I simply had to re-download the files as the ones I had downloaded (twice) were not complete. I do not understand how this happened, but apparently for some reason or another the files were not downloading completely.

When I looked closely in the mission folder I put the downloads in I noticed the ones not working were all the same files size...29k which were far smaller than the others I had downloaded.

So there it is.

Re-install under Admin

Re-download incomplete mission files

I was up to almost 4am cruising around in wess24m's custom missions.

So happy now.

Thanks to all of you guys here in the thread who helped me look closer into these issues. :book:

strange, do you save your user made missions in the above location ? or in a different location?

Well, I have tried copying to and loading from both locations:

C:\Users\*myname*\Saved Games\DCS\Missions

C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Mods\aircrafts\Uh-1H\Missions

but neither work. It just clicks back to main menu. :(

Thanks for trying!

I'm thinking your windows might be screwing with permissions / folder ownership?

Good thinking, but I tried that too.

Weird thing is, the "resupply mission" by wess24m worked when I first copied it into the SP Missions folder, but now it too will not work.

Also did you install with Admin?

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

have you opened them in the mission editor and re-saved them after the last update?

Alright let's see...

I have not been running as admin, but I just tried and still not working.

Was it installed under admin? Well I suppose so as I am the sole proprietor of this PC...running under admin privileges. Do I have to manually select install as admin?

Also I have not opened them and re-saved them in ME.

Like I mentioned the resupply mission worked last week, but for some reason, nothing but stock missions are loading now.

Bizarre.

Thanks for trying to help out.

Update - I also can't open the user created missions in the ME. I can open the stock missions. I also can't save even missions I create in the Mission Editor.

Maybe read/write permissions have been removed somehow, right click one and check the properties of it.

Maybe try readding permissions for yourself again.

Strange thing to happen, but it is windows.

Aravon17...if it makes you feel better, I'm in the exact same boat with you on this. I ALSO was able to use the "resupply mission", but haven't been successful with any of the other ones. I swear, Win8 is one big virus.

Well thanks. Sucks to know you are seeing the same problem, but there is some relief knowing I'm not the only one.

I really want to be able to fly some of the custom made missions.

I just ran it without editing it, worked fine. Dir doesn't matter, could technically run it from a flash drive. Just for clarity I ran it from my temp directory and I opened it via the mission "button", didn't have to use mission editor or anything.

Not sure if you've already tried this- Redownload it and try it, maybe try one of my other missions and see if you get the same deal.

Thanks wess...

Well I re-downloaded ZeroDarkThirty and put it on my desktop then pointed my game to the desktop download and it again kicked me right back to main menu.

This is really odd. I really want to try out your missions!

I appreciate you trying to help!

NP, You haven't by chance installed any skins have you? Not sure if that would do anything or not, try this, open it up in the mission editor and change the skin to a different one and try it.

Still no joy. I tried opening the newly downloaded mission in the ME and still nothing.

I can't even open up custom missions in the ME. When it "opens" I see the mission name, but there is zero data carried over into the ME. The map is blank, ie no mission parameters, vehicles, aircraft, ...nothing.

Oh and yes, I have installed some new skins. Just simply added the skins into the liveries/uh 1 folder.

This is crazy man.

This begs the question as to what is different between the user mission files and the ones in the sim that you can run?

Permissions/read/write?

As a matter of interest can you create your own mission, or take one of the working missions and make some change to it, maybe just time or loadout, save it and open it?

Have you considered a second instal on another drive or a complete uninstal and try again. Sometimes its the less painful route.

Many thanks for your efforts.

Here's what happens when I try to create my own mission...

"Can not open file for writing..."

Cannot open file for writing looks like a file/folder/user permission issue, but I am not a windows guru.

Right click on your DCS shortcut and goto propeties/security tab.

Alternatively locate the .exe files in your instal folder.

Have a look at the DCS.exe, launcher.exe and dcs_updater.exe in the same way.

My security permissions are shown in the attachment (the ticks) and are the same for each of them.

Also worth checking is the .mis files themselves, Compare a mission that works to one that doesnt (permission ticks)

So bizarre.

Everything looks just like yours, except I have full control ticked since I'm the only one on my PC.

I checked stock missions and custom missions permissions and they too are all the same.

I really do not want to have to uninstall/re-download/re-install, but it's looking like this is going to have to happen.

Perhaps I should install to my secondary drive this time?

again...thank you very much for your time. It's really kind of you to offer help.

Dunno man, just a tip if you do re-instal.

De-Activate your module/s first so you don't waste an activation when you instal again.

Edit: I see from your vid you only have bought the Huey module, can you change say one of the Su-25T default missions in the editor or is it Huey specific.

I just tried to change a one of the Su25 missions and it again said it can not write the file like before.

Good thinking though. It was worth a shot.

Thanks for the advice on the deactivation. I would have forgot that, no doubt. Much obliged!
