Devrim Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Hi Belsimtek. While you were developing UH-1H, when first screenshots published, at first sight I noticed the exhaust pipe's shape (or existence) on this model of Huey. Then I realized that UH-1H model didn't match with the one in my memory. I've just googled the pictures of UH-1H. I've seen some UH-1H models without that pipe. Are they another model of UH-1H or images with wrong information something? Some photos: So far, everything is fine, perfect actually. But I have still issues only with "exhaust pipe". :) Well; If I push my luck, I'd dare to ask that question: Have I any possibility and ability to remove that pipe as a user? :) A mod or edit any file? I know this is a stupid suggestion, 'cause I have some knowledge about DCS file system. But as I said, I'm pushing my luck... :music_whistling: Thank you. I think that it is designed as removable accesory. ...and it reduces tail boom polution :D Per aspera ad astra! Derk Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 It sends heated exhaust fumes through the rotors wich quickly spreads it, greatly reducing ir signature. IMHO a good thing while flying around in your average dcs threat enviroment. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Sundowner.pl Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 It's actually quite funny, the up-turned exhaust supposed to be an interim solution to the new threat of Striela and Striela-2, and after decades of study, research and development... many helicopters are getting up-turned exhausts now - the AH-64, MH-60, OH-58. The biggest effect of this exhaust duct is the limited amount of exhaust gases interacting with the tail boom - heating it up. There are better designs available today though, like the DAVIS CBT (not up-turned). [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "If a place needs helicopters, it's probably not worth visiting." - Nick Lappos
WolfK33 Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 I have to admit, I don't like the exhaust we got very much. It's just not quite that Huey look I have in my mind when I think about that bird.

Derk Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Belsimtek's Uh-1H depicts an 80's bird or close to that. The iconic picture you have in mind is some 15 years older. And then there's hollywood... That being said, i think we all share that iconic vietnam picture in our head and i do hope that when a vietnam theatre gets released there will be changes to the huey to make it fit in. Oh, and a -B or -C of course because D/H variants weren't really gunships way back when. Though i fear that this is an unlikely thing to happen. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ericoh Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 You would rather be an easier target for IR threats :smilewink: Hell yea! lol
WolfK33 Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 You would rather be an easier target for IR threats :smilewink: I'm getting shot down anyways, so I'd rather die looking good :smilewink: Yes Vietnam era birds in different variants and the fitting theatre would be a dream ! Our german Bundeswehr birds don't have that exhaust pipe, to be honest, the first time I've seen that thing is in this sim :)
Derk Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 The bundeswehr huey's are in fact licensed build Uh-1D's by Dornier. They differ even more from your typical huey than belsimtek's model in some ways. ;) +1 for Bundeswehr camouflage though, always loved it. Much cooler than our dutch helicopters. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Sundowner.pl Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 No, Dornier's Hueys ar license build UH-1H, the D on the end of designation was a German idea, don't know if it suppose to mean Deutchland, or Dornier, but it confuses the hell out of people ! :P [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "If a place needs helicopters, it's probably not worth visiting." - Nick Lappos
Derk Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 indeed it does! I stand corrected, thanks Sundowner. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Sundowner.pl Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Now a bit on the up-turned exhaust, and why it's not present on many helicopters. Every piece of technology has its drawbacks. If we take the exhaust gases and start to direct them somewhere off the turbine axis, or start mixing it with outside air, there is a pressure buildup aft of the engine power turbine, this in effect create two problems: 1 - reduces power; 2 - increases temperature - this poses additional performance limits, and shortens component lifespan. The whole setup also weight a bit more than usual. So now if we take a look at the German Hueys - those are utility helicopters, that are not deployed for combat, but also work as Search And Rescue platforms, and training for mountain flying in the Alps... Those are roles where you need lighter aircraft, more power, longer life - so no IR protection kit. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "If a place needs helicopters, it's probably not worth visiting." - Nick Lappos

Rangi Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I guess i depends what you are used to. The Australian Hueys I grew up with had the exhaust deflectors since the mid 80s (IIRC) so that is the 'true' shape to me. They just need add the intake covers as well..... monkie Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Hopefully the final product will keep the current model with the "sugar Scoop" exhaust and cable cutters, that is my favorite version circa late 80's early 90's. It would also be nice to see a scoopless version as well for those that want an earlier version of Huey. Sager Laptop, i7-6700k 4.00GHz, 16GB RAM, GTX 980M, 1920x1080, TIR 5, Windows 10
