To even play DCS World, I have to have all my settings on the bare minimum, and it still doesn't even get over 15 frames. In the air, I get about 9, on the ground, around 12. It is almost unplayable. I thought adding ram would help, so I installed more ram, yet it is still just as bad.

Computer Specs:

Processor: AMD Phenom X4 840T Processor 2.90GHZ

RAM: 10GB

Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4200

I have no idea what else to do. Should I buy a new processor or graphics card?

Price is the reason I always go for a AMD / ATI setup however they do not run so well with DCS compared to INTEL / NVIDIA at the moment.

I would wait for the new year as edge DirectX 11 is on the way for DCS ( and hopefully an improvement for ATI users ) and retail prices for computer components tend to drop in the new year.

I guess I should wait it out then? I generally don't want to go buying $300 graphics cards and CPUs if I'm not even sure what I am doing. Thanks for the help guys.

Would an I5 CPU be enough, my current job doesn't really pay me too much...

Yes it would. i7 does not offer anything gaming wise, as hyper threading is still quite not that common in games.

Spend the rest on a good graphics card ;)

I would buy an i7 920 or i7 930 Cpu. You could pick one of those up cheap enough and they can easily be overclocked to 4.0 Ghz. I have had mine overclocked for 3 years without ever having a freeze or crash. Of course it will have to fit your motherboard, but it's the cheapest option and by far the best.

Not true you can easily over clock that Cpu to 4.0Ghz. Also, just turn hyperthreading of in the Bios settings if you don't want it on. I have mine off because it's crap for gaming. No affect on DCS on or off though.

Why spend on a i7? It does not make sense. If you have a limited budget spend more on GPU and less on CPU.

Because this game use the Cpu more then the Gpu. I ran the game with good FPS with an average card and a good Cpu for months. Also, the 17 930 is as cheap as chips second hand and the i7 920 is even cheaper.

i7 does not mean its faster than i5. It only has two extra virtual cores, which DCS can't use but partially. So a higher clock i5 is still faster than a lower clock i7 in DCS.

About graphics cards, I would skip both and go for GTX 660 in that price range (just under 200usd i take it?)

EDIT: However if you go for the GTX 650 Ti, make sure it's the Boost version. Big difference. The boost version is better than GTX 560.

I currently run a EVGA GTX 560 Ti and I would recommend at least using a GTX 650. It's not that the 560 ti doesn't run it well, but because GTX 650 or greater is required if you ever want to run g-sync. If you don't know what that is I suggest researching it. It will require a new monitor but IMO it is the next big advancement in FPS since it synchronizes your GPU with your monitor perfectly unlike vsync. This will allow you to get buttery smooth FPS with out a $1,000 GPU. Granted you will need a monitor to support it but I would totally go with a minimum of a GTX 650 in case you decide to go that rout.

You talk about i5, but what i5 are you talking about? I can then look to see what it overclocks to? I'm not saying they are bad, it's just I'm thinking overclock here.

I would wait it out until EDGE appears, so that we become aware whether it is capable of utilizing several cores and how GPU dependent it is. Any upgrades before that would seem excessive to me.

I wouldn't be so certain of that. PassMark places the AMD 8320 in the upper third of top-end CPUs currently on the market, with an average score of 8132, outscoring my I7 4700MQ by ~200 points, and I run at 50-60 FPS in singleplayer, and 40-50 online.

Something else, the problem is.

A 1st Generation Phenom @ 2.9 GHz is easily near the bottom of the Current CPU Hierarchy Chart.

A Phenom II 840T is a Pre-Cursor Version of the 3.2GHz PhenomII X4 840, Which not only is downclocked, Slower Cache and Core Architecture that's 2 years older.

With Avg Rating of 35-3700

That's 1/3 to 1/4 the score of todays i-Series and FX Series CPUs.
