Well.. Who is/are TFC in relation to ED? On almost every official article and website I find "TFC & ED". Ar far as I could find in a quick Google attempt TFC is a club or organisation of WW2 era airplanes enthousiasts. What do they have to do with ED and developing the DCS sandbox and its modules? Just wondering...

And since we're at it anyway, how do ED and Ubisoft exactly relate? Although I did not search for this myself so excuse me if it's pretty easy to Google it..

Interesting! What I get from the first clip is that TFC is actually the party who iniated it all.

I gathered the same thing JayPee. I would love more history on this and more insight on the key players such as Matt, Chizh, the late Jim Mack, etc.

I could imagine they somehow split off the consumer market department and merged it somehow with the then already existing ED. Hopefully somebody with more insight will reply.

Who is TFC in relation to ED?

While ED was the producer?

Developer. A producer is something else entirely.

Well I'm not familiar with the exact definitions in English, I only know them in Dutch. In any case Ubisoft didn't 'make' the game, they just made sure it ended up in stores and in customers' hands, right?

Well i suppose they also came up with the money upfront to pay for EDs development effort and they now hold the intellectual property.

They somewhat are to ED what a major label usually is to an (established) artist. They pay the artist and pay for the costs of album production, PR, radio air time etc. for the exploitation rights of the music that is created in the process.

Got it. Still leaves the matter partly unanswered on the relation between ED and TFC.

You can find some info about TFC/ED relationship and Jim Mack here:

Matt Wagner (WAGS) is the TFC/ED producer. From an interview with him:

After resigning from the CIA as an intelligence analyst in 1998, I came onboard with the Baltimore Studio of the EA / Jane’s Combat Simulations team as a designer on the F/A-18E simulation. After the studio was closed I was off to SSI (which was later absorbed by Ubisoft) to produce Flanker 2.1, IL-2 Forgotten Battles, and Lock On. After moving back east and doing some work with Break Away Ltd on some “serious games” titles, I was sent to work full time with The Fighter Collection / Eagle Dynamics to help with design and coordinate our military and game projects in the US. While at TFC/ED I’ve produced Flaming Cliffs 2, DCS: Black Shark, DCS: A-10C, and several military training projects.

Flanker driver since 1996

Posted (edited)

Once upon a time I had a website with info on how it all began. The information posted was verified by a member of team TFC (or was it SSI?) whose name I can't remember. In fact, he posted a response in similar thread as this one saying there was once a guy who posted such info on his website. I responded that it was me. :D

Anyway, basically it went like this.

Early 1990s Eagle Dynamics was show casing their Su-27 Flanker simulation at an airshow somewhere on this planet. Obviously hoping to swoon and plug a few military contracts. This original team was made up of a bunch of Russian geniuses with degrees out their booty. Quite a few of them were scientists and engineers who actually worked on the real gas thumping, fire breathing hunk of beast. Now, this same gentleman whose name I can't remember happened to be at that very airshow and noticed Chizh thumbing his nose at passers-by, and decided to coaxed the man by way of pillow talk and moderate pistol whipping into making a PC version. It took Eagle D roughly two years to port their mil sim to PC, and somewhere in the U.S. in 1995, Gilman Louie, with a nervous grin, said to his team the Russians are coming. :D

Oh, yeah, I read that majority of the original team left ED. Not sure if Yo-Yo was part of the 'the' team, but I think Valery was, though, I haven't seen him around here for a long, long time. I'm almost sure I read somewhere that, think it was from Mr. Wags, the current team also has credentials such as master degrees and pom-poms out the poontang.

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

TFC = Parent Company

ED = Subsidiary Company*
