  1. Should we stop Cool-T from posting polls? :P

  2. Just a quick note to let folks know that I have uploaded a new tutorial to my site: F-15C: Radar Introduction and Long Range Search (LRS). This is an introduction to the F-15C's radar, the AN/APG-63. The goal of this training flight is to introduce you to the Vertical Situation Display (radar scope) and, using the Long Range Search (LRS) mode, to discuss the importance of understanding your scan volume: where it's pointing, and what it's doing. You will also learn to understand and interpret what you might see while in LRS mode. Targeting modes are not discussed. Nor will we be shooting anything down (boring, I know). All that will come in future tutorials. OTOH, I have finally found my way into the F-15's pit. You'll find the tutorial on the A2A page of my site. Enjoy. Rich

  5. I've been told that the issue of PC Pilot that I wrote a DCS: Black Shark preview for has hit the newsstands in Europe. Usually it takes a couple weeks for the magazine to make the transit over to the United States. It is issue #56 and features a 4 page spread with some information about Black Shark and some new screens. I've purposely compressed the scan to make it unreadable since PC Pilot is in the business to make money.. ;) Just wanted to give a heads up for those interested in picking it up. And I'd ask that nobody scan in full size (readable) images of the article - the copyright holders would not appreciate it (nor would I). BeachAV8R

  6. For quite some time now I have the idea of a Black Shark Wiki. Alot of information about Black Shark and the Ka-50 is already present in the forums, producer notes, etc. but its not easy accessible and its hard to add information. People will often ask the same things over and over, and some complex things are quite hard to understand if you have to collect the information from diffrent threads or other sources to get the complete view of it. That is why I would like to have an open Wiki were everyone could add to a knowledge base about Black Shark and the Ka-50. And with the release of the offical manual and of DCS:BS still to come, it would make waiting much easier ;) So what do you think about this, would you think you could support this project with content or technical? :cheer3nc:

  8. Help Indeed.............. As some have stated - will not matter in which Helo you find yourself in should that happen........It's B.O.H.I.C.A. time!! I personally prefer the 'Stalk and Snipe' role that I envisage that a large portion of my Gameplay will compromise....and as such that 30mm Monster is mounted exactly where I want it :gun_sniper:

  12. If you have unseen AAA firing at you, your problems are over and gun placement doesn't matter.

  13. I believe that the designers made a sensible choice as it being a single pilot set up it would create higher workloads. Imagine trying to train the gun onto target and fly at the same time. One way ticket to death.

  15. You're serious? :D You mean that whole curse over the movie? So let me try. It's very exciting. McVittees: Yeah, I would love to know real Ka-50 HOTAS functions map too. Any chance to show us?

  18. These kinds of things are taken into account during aircraft design so that they are not a big issue: The weapons are already generally lined up with the CG, so firing them off does not appreciably change the CG (that I can tell). The fuel tanks are arranged in such a way that the CG does not change appreciably as fuel drains out of them. The total amount of hydraulic fluid on the aircraft is not heavy enough to cause a noticeable shift in CG. Besides, if you lose all of your hydraulic fluid, you have much larger concerns. The aircraft isn't really watertight, so if there is hole big enough for fuel to leak, it will leak out of the aircraft, not redistribute itself around the aircraft. The fuel tanks have baffles in them to prevent sloshing that would alter the CG of the aircraft. To try to answer your third question, using normal loading, there isn't any way to get the Ka-50 out of CG limits. The only possible thing I can think of would be to fill one of the fuel tanks (aft or forward) and leave the other one empty, but even then I am not sure if that would be sufficient to throw the aircraft out of CG limits. I think the only way to really get the aircraft out of CG would be to have part of it shot off. ;)

  19. .. "Hokum" is an English word that Nato assigned as code name for the Ka-50 - helicopters are assigned names beginning with "H" for "Helicopter"......other examples are "Helix", "Havoc", "Hind", "Hip" etc. "Werewolf" was the name initially given to the Ka-50 by Kamov, but it was later changed to "Black Shark" :)

  25. The skval sensor suite cannot deviate to the sides a lot so you could not take full advantage of a fully articulated gun mount. Also the emphasis was clearly on long range precision as with the higher caliber instead of the spray and pray philosophy of the ah-64 for example.

  26. That one falls under the heading of "learn something new everyday". I suppose I would have realized that, if I had actually stopped and thought about it--or if I had spent enough time in the F-15's pit to notice it. Right now, I'm feeling my way through its pit a step at a time. Pretty cool, though, to enter a vertical dive and see your IAS/TAS go through the roof while your GS drops to zero. Do you mean the elevation scale on the left? Or is there something else I'm not seeing? In some respects it doesn't matter that there isn't one, though the radar's elevation position can be a bit nebulous when the TDC is positioned at ranges less than 25 nm. That's the current plan as time allows. I've been ignoring the F-15 for quite awhile now. (And I still think it's ugly.) But I can't ignore it any longer. It's absence is conspicuous on my site. And I've been getting far too many emails asking for F-15 tutorials. So the current one is the first to be followed by tutorials dealing with the F-15 as the stellar weapons platform that it is--AIM-120, AIM-7, and AIM-9 employment in their various aspects, sophisticated radar suite, high visibility cockpit, etc. I'm hoping I can get away without doing a tutorial on guns--I suck at gunzo. :) At this point I'm still debating the organization of the remainder: STT vs TWS? BVR vs WVR? Take each weapon separately? Or some other format? I want to "teach" the pieces but make sure that, in the process, people understand how each pieces fits into the whole--the concept of the F-15 as a superior A2A weapons platform where its radar, the missiles, and the pilot shape the outcome of the fight. Those "pieces" need sufficient depth but, at the same time, should be short enough not to overload the viewer. Hence the organizational dilemma. But I'll figure it out as I go. And I'd better figure it out fast because I want to get started on #2 this weekend--time allowing. I often find that I have to reorganize the work in progress to keep the information clear. What works on paper doesn't always translate as well to video. That's why I enjoy making these things. See above. :) Rich

  27. Test with side targets showed that Ka-50 is more precise turning it self to the side (without changing the direction it's moving), than Mi-28 turning just its gun. :) The gun is close to center, so it has a much smaller effect on stability

  28. firstly the gun is 30 mm caliber it gives you 5 tons of recoil... it is where it supposed to be... secondly there is auto mode which points the heli at the target... so.. go back to practicing... guitar ;)

  30. The fore mentioned link the the SIMMOD site will explain how it works but you are right; building a nice new custom map involves a huge amount of work.
