Nvidia 680 GTX Inbound
Gunnergolly replied to Terminal Meltdown's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'm back to using my old HD5870 after my HD7950 failed after less than a weeks use. I found that my CPU became very much the FPS limiter when using the HD7950. I've also (temporary) ditched my second monitor which i used for my Halios display and am i am now using only the 37" LED TV at a res of 1920x1080 running in full screen. My old faithful HD5870 is having absolutely now problem running this sim now that its only running the one screen and also using full screen mode.. However i was thinking of going Nvidia for a change. My question is:- Would one of these new 680 cards be too much of an overkill for my current setup. I was thinking that maybe for me at least a Nvida 580 would do the job just fine and money saving would also enable to buy a 850W Corsair power supply as well. I know it's nice to have the fastest and best, but if my ageing HD5870 handles my setup, then surely a 580 will do just fine ???... Any honest opinions would be much appreciated... Regards Gunner.... -
Finally upgraded to 37" TV
Gunnergolly replied to JaseGill's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Jasegill How did you rename the channel to PC on your Samsung TV ?. I have the same model TV as you. I'm having problems with scaling and can't seem to find where you can rename the channel. Maybe i'm doing something wrong as i've only just bought the TV, however going from a 22" monitor to a 37" TV to my eyes the picture looks alot more blurry. I guess this is due to the fact that i'm now stretching the 1920x1080 resolution over a much larger area. Are there any other settings that i can adjust on this TV to get a better picture ?... Finally upgraded to 37" TV
Gunnergolly replied to JaseGill's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I was thinking of replacing my 23" monitor with an LED TV. If i go for a 37" TV i'd be sitting about 0.6m away from it using my current computer desk. I was wondering wouldn't this be a bit too close for comfortable viewing ???... I recently had to RMA my HD7950 card as it failed after only a weeks use, so i've reverted back to using my old HD5870 graphics card. Would the HD5870 be sufficient to drive a single 37" or 40" TV ?, i currently have a dual monitor setup with a 22" monitor sat on top of a 23" monitor using halios. If i were to buy a TV then i would probably just use the TV on it's own initially without my Halios touchscreen monitor....however i would miss Halios !!!. I was thinking along the lines that if my HD5870 was up to the job, they'd be little point in buying a replacement HD7950. When my RMA refund money comes through i was thinking of spending the money on a TV instead. Regards Gunner... -
Appreciate your replies.... I've just refitted my old HD 5870 and everything is ok again... I did consider that the HD 7950 card would be more punishing on my power supply, however i've rechecked the manual specs and apparently my power supply is considered adequate. I bought the twin fan XFX HD 7950 due to the very fact that it came with two fans to help with cooling and my operating temperatures have been around 54 DegC. The artifacts/flashing lines are there from the start.....even when the card is relatively cool (34 DegC).... I have notice that when the game has gone through it's loading screen and the game starts i can hear a clicking sound coming from the graphics card. It sounds more electronic then mechanical and stops as soon as i exit the game. I have been using the Cat 12.3's for the past 5 days with no problems and all of a sudden i'm getting these flashing lines etc etc.. So it's a case of "RMAing" the card back to "Overclockers" tomorrow were i bought it from and hopefully getting a replacement as and when. In the meantime it's back to my two year old faithful 5870... Regards....Gunner.

Hello I've had my XFX 7950 for less than a week, up to now it has been working really well and has been very stable. I was playing a mission for a couple of hours earlier today with absolutely no problems, then i started another one and i kept getting all these flickering lines and artifacts flashing on and off. The sreen shots don't really do the problem any justice as there maybe 10 of these lines flashing on and off at any one time.......quiet severely... Have tried re-installing the drivers, changing monitor leads etc etc, has anybody else had any problems like this with their card in the past......what is it, the card internals breaking down ???... The card seems fine when i'm running the Windows desktop, however when i open the catalyst control center on the game video settings page. Half the setting options disappear and then reappear as i scroll up and down ?......even through the Windows desktop is ok.... Posted a few photo's to show what i mean....... Tomorrow i will put my old AMD 5870 back in and see if the problem go's away, i personally think my old card will be fine.... Just wanted some thoughts/opinions/other peoples experiences before i send what i believe to be a faulty card back. Shame as i was really enjoying this card :(... Regards Gunner....

Hello JG_14 You asked in your PM how i got my PVI-800 and UV-26 displays working on my second monitor. Please find attached copies of the files that i use:- In your BS2 installation look in these locations :- E:\DCS Black Shark 2\Scripts\Aircrafts\Ka-50\Cockpit\EKRAN\Indicator E:\DCS Black Shark 2\Scripts\Aircrafts\Ka-50\Cockpit\UV_26 E:\DCS Black Shark 2\Scripts\Aircrafts\Ka-50\Cockpit\PVI Back up your original copies of the... Ekran init.lua PVI init.lua UV 26 init.lua Then replace them with my files.... The viewportHandling.lua will disable your SHkval, UV-26 and PVI-800 "in cockpit" displays, but still allows exporting to your second monitor. It is located here:- E:\DCS Black Shark 2\Scripts\Aircrafts\_Common\Cockpit Then it's a case of adjusting your monitorconfig file to position them in the correct location, Hope that helps Regards Gunner.... Thanks for your input peterP... I can now see where i've been going wrong.......simples !!! :) 33% !!!!......Yeah that's a lot of render wastage with the way that my current inefficient BS2 monitor configuration has been setup.... Just had a look at how i have configured my current A-10C setup to try and gauge how much of an improvement i could make by moving my monitors :- If i were to change to a side by side setup then i would only make a 5% saving in terms of total render area (3.888.000/4.089.600 px) However i am now running a HD7950 card and i really don't think i'll see any performance return in my A-10C setup for my re-editing efforts ?......however it would be good to be able to run in full screen mode. Although i will probably change my A-10C files too, just to keep some level of consistency between the two different setups. I'll start on my BS2 setup first when i have the time as this is where the most gain will be made. You certainly have !!!, thanks again and i'll make a donation to SoftTH in appreciation of your efforts in helping out.... Cheers Gunner... EDIT.... Just had a thought, maybe i'd only need a total resolution of 3600 X 1050 (NOT 1080) for my A-10C setup ?. My reasoning is that the space below my digital clock is dead space, that way i'd have a total resolution of 3.780.000 px a (3.780.000/4.089.600) 8% saving over my current setup ???...

Gizmo I'm not an expert on graphics cards by any means but i've just bought an XFX HD7950. So far it has had about 24 hours of hard use over the 4 days that i have owned it and has proven to be very stable even when overclocked. Initially the HD7xxx series cards when first released last month were reported by other forum members as not being stable with DCS. From my personal experience of using this card thankfully i have found that this is no longer the case when using these drivers:- http://www.mediafire.com/?dji4ozqk22q7sr9........(thanks Mustang)... Personally i wouldn't bother considering the HD7970 for DCS as in the UK it's over a £100 more and in my opinion i don't think you would gain anything more in terms of performance/FPS for that extra outlay in cash........ I'm sure that within my system the CPU is now the main FPS bottle neck... I still have to make compromises with this card in terms of graphics settings as i'm a dual screen halios user running in "windowed mode"...........However DCS looks stunning now, (Rise of flight is just awesome !!!). However nearly all my settings are on high with the exception of water and mirrors are set to off. Knowing what i know now, i'd certainly buy this card again....even if it meant spending that little bit more outside of your budget :) !!!!..... Before you ask........no i don't have any affiliation with AMD !!!..... Regards Gunner....

Hello PeterP. Hope your well. I came across this thread today and thought i'd give your config tool a try. To be honest i have always suffered FPS loss whenever i have tried to use SoftTH in the past and so still continue to use "windowed mode". I've renewed my interested in softTH due to the amount of resources that my graphics must be wasting in order to render all that unused screen "real estate" on my second monitor in BS2 (i'm a Halios user)......see picture below:- As you can see the Abris, PVI, Shkval, Ekran and UV26 display's are using less then half of my available second screen area. Rather then write loads i have included lot's of pictures instead !!!... I have included relevant information below:- Monitor Config File. SoftTH Config file. Default SoftTH config tool file. My modified SoftTH config file to try and render only the right half of my bottom screen. The final result..........not quiet what i had in mind !!!!. The above picture i made in photoshop as FRAPS would only screen capture about two thirds of my lower monitor when running in full screen.....but i hope you get the picture ... I was hoping that after my "mod" softTh would only render the right hand side of my lower screen as i don't use the left half. However it seems that i've misunderstood something in setting up SoftTh ???.. Please peterP when you have the time would you have a quick look over my setup and maybe provide me with a pointer as to what i'm doing wrong ?... My system spec's are:- Best regards Gunner....

How's that card of yours running Kuky ?, is she still running stable with Aero theme enabled ????.. I'm a halios user so i need the Aero theme to be enable, otherwise i get terrible FPS if i only use a basic theme. If your being limited by CPU now, i think i'd probably go for the HD7950 instead and save myself some money. Regards Gunner...

Not to mention the enviroment !!!...

What do you think about P-51D and Flying Legends?
Gunnergolly replied to csper's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
I agree with you EtherealN, the inclusion of a turbo engine and some hardpoints would require alot of recoding with the flight dynamics etc, etc. But i feel that the P-48 "Enforcer" would be a more fitting aircraft for this simulator. Personally i'm not really that interested in the P-51, however since it's just a side project and it's not affecting their "other" more interesting projects they mentioned on the road map they posted a while back.......i say good luck to them. Just don't know quite what i'm going to do with the P-51, at least until they produce a BF109... -

I'd like them to take extra time to incorporate some additional changes to their current model and produce one of these as well :- -
will do.....

If my memory is correct using version 2.07 caused the game to crash whenever a unit launched a missile, version 2.08 has been fine in that regard. When I get home in a couple of weeks time I will try your suggested fix and post my files for you to review. Appreciate your offer of checking my files/setup peterP. Cheers Gunner....

Thanks for the replies. I will do as you suggested and run that test using FRAPS to record the results (i'm assuming that FRAPS can do that as i have never used the program before ?). PeterP.... I have tried using SoftTh and it works.....however on my system when i go into the mission editor i'm having these problems (i used SoftTH208balpha_x64). 1) The names of the places on the mission editor map are blurred and they are flickering on and off. 2) The grid co-ordinates are not displayed on the map. 3) If i'm playing BS2 the ABRIS map is also having the above problem (No1). It's probably just a wrong setting on my end :(. However i will be away from my computer for the next two weeks due to work commitments so would you mind if i posted you my settings/config files/screen shots on my return. Just so that you could maybe spend a minute checking my setup. Many thanks Gunner....

I currently have a 1Gb ATI 5870, i was considering the ATI 7970 but have been put off by the difficulty that others are experiencing with this card at the moment.....although i know that it is a new card and hopefully the drivers will improve and support DCS products in the future That only really leaves the Nvidia 580 as i'm lead to believe that there is no point in buying a dual GPU card for this sim... I'm running run a dual monitor setup 1680X1050 & 1920X1080, would there be any advantage to having the 3Gb card over the 1.5Gb card for my setup/resolution ?. (I have an i5 Processor@4.8Ghz and 8Gb of Ram)... Thanks

I'd be willing to pay for one of those too !!!!....

Please ED, if your going to give us a P-51, why not make a few modifications to your model and give us one of these too ???.... Piper PA48 Enforcer. http://www.aviastar.org/air/usa/piper_pa-48.php Just a suggestion :smilewink:.... Regards Gunner....

This will disable the two MFCD's within the cockpit:- http://www.scsimulations.com/showthread.php?1726-Where-do-I-start/page3 I turn them off and export to my second monitor... Regards Gunner.....

Good news at least about "Rise of flight"......one of my favourites too !!!... I guess it's just a waiting game now for some good drivers that work well with DCS. In the mean time i guess i'm just going to have to wait before i get my hands on one of those 7970's !!!..

Hello I'm trying to create a very simple mission so that i can practice with the JTAC at night using the IR pointer to designate targets. I have a Humvee and a OH-58D available. I've got the Humvee designating ok with his IR pointer but the OH-58D is not having any of it. Please could someone have a look at my attached mission and maybe tell me what i'm doing wrong as i don't have that much experience with the mission editor. Frequencies are as follows:- OH-58D Kiowa Callsign "Springfield" 45Mhz FM. Humvee Callsign "Shaba" 131Mhz AM. Is the IR pointer directional ?, even when the Humvee says that he is "Sparkling" i often can't see the IR pointer. It seems that i can see his pointer best when im behind him and looking in the same direction as he is. Appreciate any help Regards Gunner.... Convoy Attack Night.miz

SSD Drive (Worth the expense?)
Gunnergolly replied to trek's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I didn't know that !!!. Just to clarify.....the above step 6 would return all my MOBO settings to factory default ?, that wouldn't be a problem providing that by re-setting the CMOS it leaves my OC profiles that i have saved in BIOS untouched. Kuky....Hope your having better luck with that new ATI video card of yours ??, i'm wanting to buy one of those too !!!...
