Sounds great. Personally, I suggest most simpit builders ideally just do 2-projector 180 degree. Something like 6-projector setup like that is only adding complexity for cost. Sure you get more pixel density with that but I don't think 6x projector cost is worth messing with for the added pixel density. I read up on building for two years 2006-2008, before trying my first build. There is plenty of research out there before you decide on building a screen. It's just like simpits -- there are always 10 different ways to do something.

Just a heads up, he's confirmed he will be releasing it to open source for sure soon. Previously he was only pondering it.

Look in my sig for several examples of pre-warping software. I've been experimenting with multi-projector setups since 2009. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. I help other DIY builders all the time with multi-projector projects.

Apparently, they're a little proud of their screen for that price point.

Overall, I like the design. I've been pushing front dual-projection 180-degree for about a year now with multiple builds. Dual projector keeps the price of entry down as you're typically 2560x800 native, so you can push that resolution without needing SLI or Crossfire. Obviously, two projectors are more cost effective than using three. Only issue is it's easier to implement with AMD cards than NVIDIA. With NVIDIA you'll need one of the Zotac DP to Dual-HDMI Active adapters. I've spoken with zahry a few times and he seems to have a good design overall for several different rear projection screen designs. This particular one seems to be my favorite so far because of it's hardware requirements are more sensible than most multi-projector setups. Personally, I'm partial to a projection height between 48-60", but this screen would be much more manageable than what I typically do.

Wow, that's a lot of air suction. Thanks for the link. I was wanting to get one of those for my grinding table in my machine shop.

660cfm? I wonder if he meant 66.0cfm? I have a Delta 120mm 220cfm fan that sounds like a jet taking off.

I've pondered the china lasers before on ebay. How much is the upgrade to g-code controller if I install it myself?

Why glossy clear coat? Real panels are matte for anti-glare.

My assumption is with Star Citizen you'll be able to do this sort of thing with the multi-player ships.

Anyone Using 3600x1920 3x1 Portrait?
BHawthorne replied to walker450's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Sort of depends on a few things. The Gigabyte card can only push 4 displays while the ASUS card can push 6. Gigabyte card is two-slot while the ASUS is three-slot. Slightly better GPU clock on the ASUS and a lot better memory clock on the ASUS. The ASUS Matrix Platinum is the no compromise 7970. It's the top of the line. And the oversized cooling on it makes it run cool under max load. It's overkill for most 7970 users though. I'd only humor getting it if you want the top 7970. It's a great card and I enjoy it but I don't think it's really $100 better. -

Be mindful like I said earlier that DP and DVI/HDMI are not compatible protocols. You need an active adapter for DP to DVI or HDMI. They cost $20-25. That'll get you fixed up. Some businesses sell passive DP-HDMI adapters that are useless to AMD cards. A bit of background on how AMD works with more than 2 ports out enabled. All modern AMD cards since the 5000-series have 6 port clocks for DP and 2 port clocks for legacy DVI/HDMI. Here is where things get tricky. Say you want to connect more than two displays that have DVI/HDMI. You need to use active adapters to give you extra external DVI/HDMI port clocks. Passive DVI/HDMI adapters don't work on displays 3, 4, 5, or 6. Get one of these. Note in the close up product pics that it has ACTIVE written on the adapter: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815129012 and the appropriate length DVI-HDMI cable. One end will be DVI and the other HDMI on the cable. http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp?spcDB=10231&spcWord=Video+Cables+-+%3Cb%3EHDMI+%26+DVI%3C%2Fb%3E&keyword=hdmi%20dvi The devil is in the details with multi-display. Let me know if you need any more help. I've learned it all the hard way over the years and would rather my experience be useful to others. -

Yep, 2 mDP-DP cables and a DVI cable to the third will work. The dual adapters Kuky talks about are handy pushing a bunch of extra displays. I have three of the DP to Two HDMI port Zotac ones. Gotta watch out how the OS sees them though, they'll see them as a pseudo 3840x1080 display not as two 1920x1080 with that adapter. That'll effect potential Eyefinity groupings with them. -

It's important to use IPS if you're going to have a lot of portrait use. The anti-glare film they use on TN panels orients the FOV range optimized for landscape mode, while IPS panels are good both portrait and landscape. My Samsung 245BW are TN panels and they're annoying in portrait mode because of the TN portrait FOV angle issue. Which Dell IPS displays are you planning on using? That'll better help decide which method of connection you'd use with a standard 7970 port out configuration. -

I just realized that ASUS doesn't ship any adapters with the 7970 Matrix for display #3. I need to pick up a single-link active adapter from Newegg. Might be Thursday or Friday of next week before I have the adapter to test with. -

I just recently swapped a 7970 Matrix Platinum into my rig. I'll plug in three of my Samsung 245BW in the next few days to see how performance is. -

True, all I know is that it's a lot of height to have right in front of you on a desk. I find it novel but a bit annoying for 24/7 use. If I did it for any length of time, it would be with 20" or 22" displays. At issue with projectors any that use UHP based projector lamps don't like to be oriented in portrait mode. The thermals will either tell the projector it's overheating and auto shut down or it will actually overheat and shut down or damage it. Worse case the bulb will blow. To get around that sort of limitation you need to use a projector with low thermals. Those tend to be LED-based. Problem with LED based is they're not meant for large size projection and typically have really low lumens ratings. There are some brands out now that are called laser-LED hybrid light engines. I don't know how the laser-LED hybrid is as afar as thermals and if they are still as cool in temperature during use. If they are this might be the projector type that can push that 1920p pixel height that would be the holy grail for projection resolution for some. Just be mindful that Eyefinity 4x1P, 5x1P or 6x1P with those is awful deep pockets for an unknown. Then again someone has to be the first to try it. Someone should get a single one of those projectors, mount it in portrait mode and run it 8 hours a day for a few weeks to test it's behavior. Until then I'm a bit anxious about the concept of anyone using one like that. -

Both are based on DisplayPort or DP for short. The smaller port is Mini-DisplayPort or mDP. There is a specification group called VESA. They're the ones that wrote the spec for DVI. DVI was frozen as a spec years ago and VESA in the last few years have been developing DP as a direct replacement for DVI. DVI and DP are not compatible with each other on a protocol level. They speak different languages. This is why when people often do multi-display setups that you hear about something called ACTIVE adapters. They are called active because they have active transcoding circuitry within them that takes the DP protocol and transcodes it into DVI for output to legacy port types. If you plan on doing multi-display remembering active DP adapters are needed will be important. It's one of those things that neither NVIDIA nor AMD bother to tell anyone. NVIDIA cards tend to have a single full sized DP port while AMD depending on the card port layout might either have multiple DP or mDP ports. DP can do some pretty interesting things that noone talks about yet. They allow daisy-chaining of multiple DP 1.2 displays off of a single DP video card port. Also DP was designed to have significantly more bandwidth capability so you can push much higher resolutions through a single cable than DVI could. With DP you can run UHD/4kHD through a single video cable. That wasn't possible before. Probably a lot of useless trivia in this post for you but I'm sure some of you will find something useful in it. :) -
Yep, it's a 21:9 AR display. I was joking over on the EVGA forums the other day someone should get 5 of them and do 5x1P. They're ideal for cinematic blu-ray content. Most cinematic blu-ray movies are shot in 2.35:1 AR which also equals 21:9.

I've ran 3600x1920 on both NVIDIA and AMD cards and 6000x1920 on AMD cards. The aspect ratio of 3600x1920 is pretty close to standard single display, so there'll be no real surprises with how it behaves. I liken 3600x1920 as a cheap 30" but with bezels. You get about the same experience with a 30" 2560x1600. -
FC3 F-15 canopy frame too thick?
BHawthorne replied to silentbob11's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Hrrm, I could hop into Steve Cannaby's F-15A cockpit and snap a few comparison shots of the canopy frame closed. Is there any difference between the F-15A and F-15C canopy frame? -
My guess it's it's some euphemism or cultural reference used in the Russian military. Maybe it was the code name for the game build and it somehow stuck through to release? Project code names tend to be the most nonsensical names ever. Pulling those guesses out of my rear though.

Are there mil-spec numbers for entire panels?
BHawthorne replied to Mindz i's topic in Home Cockpits
Every aircraft has an illustrated parts breakdown manual, which is the -4. All parts numbers can be found in it. I highly doubt the C model IPB is available anywhere, but the A model probably is.
