Emergency divert to Groom Lake....
Jayhawk1971 replied to Indianajon's topic in F-14A Zone 5 Campaign
Maybe an over-G? -
The only way I'm ever going to accept a D model is if it comes with triple glove vanes....stacked, perpendicular, of course.

There are three missions where AAR is specifically part of the mission design (albeit skippable). The rest of the missions have optional tanker support. You don't need to AAR at all (unless you're too liberal with burner use), but IMO it's recommended for immersion's sake. Edit: also, don't forget that while you may not need gas, your AI wingman may very well need some...a lot, even. So probably a good idea to at least let him hit the tanker while you can practice formation flying while he's busy.

M15 and campaign feedback
Jayhawk1971 replied to tsgucci's topic in F/A-18C Raven One: Dominant Fury campaign
I also just finished Mission 15. What a fantastic campaign!! I did the whole mission in one long session (no "F10 skipping"), and I loved it! I really enjoy those long missions with multiple visits to the tanker, and lots of other flights. Mission specific spoiler: Can't wait for your next campaign(s). Next should be the F-16 one with Rain, right? -
How did you arrange your HOTAS around your desk (or "home cockpit")? I ask because you can make your life magnitudes easier if you have a way to rest your "stick"-arm on something. For example: I used to fly with both throttle and stick just sitting right and left of me on my desk, which was fine for FBW aircraft, I guess. But looking back, I was really prone to overcorrecting on my stick inputs. Since then (about a year ago) I have moved my stick to a center mount setup (like in the real jet), and have it low enough so that I can rest my elbow and lower arm on my upper right thigh. I am not steering with my arm at all for 98% of the time (except maybe in a wild dogfight), but only move the stick with the wrist and most of the time only the fingers. That will really help smooth out your stick movements. Also, why does that advice sound so unintentionally naughty?

Yes, got a freeze yesterday in mission 14 in Dominant Fury, towards the end of the mission, right when a scripted radio call was triggered. Generally, it seems to me those freeze-crashes only occur when some kind of event is being triggered, like radio calls or units spawning? In another campaign I was heading back to the carrier in the Tomcat, and the mission froze just as (Supercarrier) Marshal was responding to my inbound call (it froze as the radio call was played).

Just got a freeze in mission 14, right when I (Flip) reported feet wet. Right when Flip was making the radio call. According to the log, this was the final "error" message right before the freeze 2022-09-04 21:43:02.192 ERROR SOUND: render time = 0.011225s exceeded allowed slice of 0.010000s I am on the latest open beta patch, no mods installed. Very unfortunate, because up to that point this was probably my most favorite mission of the campaign so far.

BTW, what are currently the determining factors regarding map size in DCS? Detailed land mass? I'm asking because I would be very up for a Northern Atlantic map for cold war Carrier operations (think "Hunt for Red October" or "Red Storm Rising"). Maybe use the coasts of Nova Scotia, Iceland and Western Ireland and Acores as boundaries?

Some personal opinion on f14's flight model during refueling
Jayhawk1971 replied to Ddg1500's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Hey, I didn't say I was going to buy one. I wouldn't say no to a community-driven crowd-funding campaign, though (or in my case, being German, Kraut-funding). Seriously, though, my point was more that the notion of owning a motion platform isn't as outlandish anymore as one of the posters further up in this thread claimed (donning a leather flying cap, etc.). It's within the price range of mere mortals now, compared to what those things used to cost (and some still cost). And some of the home-made sim pits I've seen in posted in other threads must have cost a lot to build as well, excluding the invested manhours, so I'd say 5000 Dollars is a sum that I suppose many who see simming as their main hobby would be willing to invest. Dedicated mountain bikers spend a lot more on their bikes, as do hobby photographers/ videographers on their gear. Or model train aficionados. -
I finally completed the mission (successfully), Weed again did not engage the first group, but I'm pretty certain that's just me blasting the Floggers too quickly (I'm in TWS, so with both of them bugged, I just shoot at both). He probably would simply need more time to engage. He did engage the "Brushbacks", though. This time I tucked in behind Weed about 2 miles and let him get off the first shot (figured he still has his Aim-120's, he should probably use 'em ), so I was in a better position to take on Brushback No. 2.

Tried 20 minutes ago, no freezes, could complete the mission, latest patch.

I mean the V-22 would be an easy module to make: wouldn't even need a flight model. My guesses would be: UH-60 variant F/A-18E (F?) early F-15C full fidelity MiG-29 full fidelity Oh, I missed "3rd party" So, in that case strike the F-15 and MiG-29 Hmm, Phantom, Eurofighter and A-6 have already been kind of announced, so Cessna O1 AH-1W which is wishful thinking on my part

Some personal opinion on f14's flight model during refueling
Jayhawk1971 replied to Ddg1500's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Ok, let's say "comparatively" not that expensive anymore. Some of those things I've found when I googled probably cost more than a PPL and a lasik, and a used Piper Cup, so 5000 Euros are "nothing" in comparison -

Jayhawk1971 replied to Ddg1500's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
IDK, from what I've seen, those platforms seemed decent enough. If it's good enough for sim racing, I suppose it'll be good enough for DCS....and the civvy one. As long as you don't want to mount a full-fledged homepit onto the thing. All I need to mount on top of it is a seat (if it doesn't come with one), a HOTAS, maybe a keyboard, a VR headset, and my elven-like arse. My biggest concern would be longevity. Edit: I've also found one for 180,000. Full 360° range of motion. Need to save up a little more, buy a garage, and invest in barf bags. -

What Dragon1-1 said. Also, motion platforms aren't that expensive anymore. There seem to be quite decent ones available for around 5000 bucks (that's less than a Sony A1 camera). 6 DOF. -
For me, he did not engage the first time the option was presented (or I was too fast killing the southern group myself). Second engagement, he did engage with Sidewinder (9L?)... ...albeit too late for me, because I was going down in flames by the time he engaged. He did avenge me, though.

I'm really excited for this campaign. Not only do we desperately need a high-quality SP campaign for the Viper, it's also the SEAD/ DEAD mission I was truly itching for, even before reading Hampton's book, but even more so after I've read it. Especially after having played the great Cerberus North campaign (where I'm still stuck in part 2 of the final mission; I get shot down every time , no matter what I'm doing. ), with itscustom ATC. And now you're adding custom IADS to this upcoming one? Instant purchase!

Some personal opinion on f14's flight model during refueling
Jayhawk1971 replied to Ddg1500's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Have you checked if you have any "double bindings" on your control axis? Maybe something is interfering with your input device? Because otherwise, it's all you, mate. I have absolutely no problems with AARing in the Tomcat, with a bog-standard (= no modifications), 10+ years old Logitech G940 HOTAS. I have zero curves and a tiny deadzone (1). Personally, I find the Tomcat to be the easiest module within DCS to AAR in. Excluding any "outside issues" like controller setup problems, my advice for you would be to just practice handling the F-14 (both A and B) in free flight. Set curves to zero on all axis. Tiny deadzone (1 or 2, depending on your stick and rudders). I make it a point to jump into a free flight instant action mission for half an hour or so, every time I come back to the Tomcat after spending some time in another module, and just practice precise flying. For example: keeping the VVI needle centered during cruise at different speeds and altitudes, turning without loosing/ gaining altitude, employing the rudder, formation flying, correct overhead breaks and AAR. In short, build (or regain) the necessary muscle memory Once you have that down cold, AAR should be a breeze. -
That might explain why subsequent Phoenix shots were "trashed"? I always - unscientifically - found that my first shot usually hit the target, whereas the second (and rare third) missile was going haywire. Since switching to VR, I got rid of TacView for performance reasons, so I had no way to check what the missiles were doing. Edit: strictly referring to TWS launches But IIRC someone (about a year ago?) came up with the theory that in TWS, the (in-game) AWG-9/ Jester would latch on to the first Phoenix instead of maintaining track of the target that would be "next in line" in TWS priority. Could also be complete hogwash, what do I know?! Guess we'll find out soon, though.
