You get much the same effect on nvg with a helicopters rotor disk. There's a lot of air being sucked into the front stage and for a flame to get from the back of the engine to the front of the fan would be virtually impossible, I would hazard a guess that it's particles being blown up/sucked onto the fan disk.

It's a light grey/blue and the darker area is exhaust stains. The tail number looks to be on the main tail boom and is covered by the stain/patina.
