Radar obtains tracks at highly inconsistent ranges
Napillo replied to Arctic Fox's topic in Bugs and Problems
If you're firing on a mig-21, you need to set the target size to small - by default it is on medium, and that means the missile turns on its radar 5nm away from the target. Since the RCS of the mig-21 is small, you need to put it on small, and keep the target tracked until the missile goes pitbull. I agree though, I can reliably see a target on radar, and I can't lock it. I have to wait until it gets closer, and that's not how radars work at all. I should be able to lock a target even before I see it on the returns. -

[CHK] standby targeting mode unusual behavior
Napillo replied to Napillo's topic in Bugs and Problems
When I want to be stealthy, I like to use the PL-5EII seeker but fire the SD-10 missiles on the found targets, with my radar turned off. The best way I found to do that is by using the standby targeting mode. -

yea, everything aside from the stuff that depends on ED to make work, like the beacon radar mode (works but its a hack) and the WA mode (clouds don't have radar returns) -

depends on how far it is, but mig-21 has an RCS of 3, compared to for example an F-16 which has an RCS of 5. The larger it is, the farther you can lock it from, and the reverse is true as well i.e. the smaller it is the harder it is to lock. -

pinging @uboats on this since I don't think it has been triaged yet, and I do have a track file attached. -

S1_FORWARD puts you into dogfight mode and switches you to PL-5EII. I recommend once you are in the air, go into dogfight mode to ready your PL-5EII and unlock the seeker (S2_PRESS). -

I use RWS and VS quite a bit, it gives me a better picture of the area. VS can pick up targets from very far away, so when I don't know where the enemy is, but have a general idea, I at least get a bearing on them. RWS also has a slightly longer range, and TWS is only for either hot or cold but not both. RWS is great when you don't know if the enemy is going towards you or away from you. You can then lock and get their vector, or rely on the datalink to handle that for you. Also, RWS can scan a larger section of the sky than the TWS can - even if you increase the horizontal width of TWS, you see it switches to less bars, because your radar needs to hit those targets pretty quickly to track them. RWS is more forgiving. Also, in situations where there are a lot of targets (normally on GS) RWS will put up bricks where TWS will give you a mix of bricks and triangles because you're exceeding the maximum number of TWS tracks. Once I have a target, if I am not trying to DTT, I will STT lock before firing a missile, especially in close range (<20nm) because I don't want to lose lock. Sometimes I'll STT lock someone from far away just because I want their RWR to annoy them, it's a psychological warfare thing. If I am 40nm - 50nm away, then a bugged contact flying high, I'll pitch up 10 degrees, set the missile target size on small, and fire, that lofts the missile, so I can fire from beyond the maximum range and still hit. It also comes down on them, so maybe the missile can avoid activating an RWR on certain aircraft, because it'll be in their blind spot. The missile going active 2nm away from the target means if their RWR picks up the missile, they'll only have a few seconds to respond anyway. I'll put the missile target size to large if I am just firing a missile to make the enemy go defensive. I normally just take the single middle 800l tank, and two SD-10 (one on each wing) - I do this because that's the most common configuration seen on the real JF-17, and it will help you go faster, meaning your missiles will be a lot more lethal. I'll release the missiles at mach 1.2, or as close to it as I can get. By taking just one tank, my drag is reduced, meaning more speed, and since it's a small tank, I can use it to just get up to altitude and drop it quick, so I'm faster. If I would take two, I'd have them attached longer, more drag, and be slower, though it's great to have extra if I'm going to be flying low over long distances. I once did a 300nm strike with just the built-in fuel tanks, and landed with 1200lb fuel. A lot of the time, a single tank is all you need, though, if you have a TGP on the middle, it makes sense to bring the two tanks, but I never take the 1100 ones because I've never needed that much fuel - your air will run out before you run out of fuel with the dual 1100 drop tanks config. Not to mention, the 1100 tanks need you to be a lot slower to drop them. I've been a lot more successful taking just two SD-10 vs taking 4, because I fire them only when I have a very good chance of getting a kill, I can go faster, and when I launch my last missile, I immediately head home. I can avoid missiles chasing me because i'm faster, and since I am not in the sortie for a long time, I have less chance of dying. -
I forgot which mode I was in, it was either tws auto or manual. I got radar returns, identified targets as hostile/friendly with the buttons, so I have a full hafu. targets were within 40-60nm and there were priority numbers assigned to them. Launched on them, and there was no countdown on any of the targets. what am I doing wrong?
-
dude, all the cruise missiles get shot down by ship defense. You have to do multiple launches from multiple angles released around the same time to have any sort of chance at hitting any ship with a ciws. It's not just the 802ak. It's all.

I don't think so, the LD-10 would not need a large battery like the SD-10 has, because it is not actively shooting radar waves at anything. If it does, then if the battery is the same size, the LD-10 would last a lot longer (lifetime variable) and that doesn't seem to be the case. Perhaps it has more explosive? idk. LD-10 is rumored to have a warhead of 20kg, and the AGM-88 harm 66kg, but in the dcs datamine it shows 26.4 for harm and 20 for ld-10, which I believe as DCS uses the number, that refers to the TNT equivalent weight, which would surely be more for both missiles.

[CHK] standby targeting mode unusual behavior

reproduce - start instant action bvr, switch to INTC, then d to switch to IR missiles. reticle shows. Uncage them. switch 1 to go back to nav mode, flip on the standby IR, see the IR missile but reticle is caged. Switch back to INTC, press D to select IR missiles, no reticle but you have the buzzing. See attached track. It also does the same for bomb reticle, but did not test that with this track. IR reticle disappearing.trk -
That's not what I am talking about, it seems like it's setting an SPI, which you can see as a diamond in the HUD, whatever is locking you.
-
I noticed some new behavior, it will put a marker on something that is locking you, anyone else notice that?
-
Provide a track or something, we might be able to tell you what the cause is.

I was using GMTI on the bottom MFD and there were a lot of targets, furthest of which was enemy (thanks IFF). I locked onto it and then turned on my wmd (left MFD) so I can get a visual. seemed it was behind a building maybe, turned to IR to see it better, within a few frames, I got locked up by a HT (whatever that is) and the game crashed. Apparently in JF_17::ccMainPanel::getPointOfInterest dcs.log-20220608-012326.zip

You're likely doing something wrong, as I never have that issue. Here's my startup procedure. 1. turn on all three switches for power 2. push 'combat' button 3. turn up brightness on hud and ufcp 4. ask ground crew to remove inlet cover 5. flip up fuel pump, engine, uncage throttle, turn on radio, turn on shars 6. ask ground crew to update INS (so I don't have to type in the lat long myself) 7. hold start to get the engine starting 8. wait for ground crew to say the ins update is done 9. flip INS to fast, type in the heading, flip it to nav 10. load weapons on the plane (not fuel) 11. close cockpit, flip on the ECS, lock cockpit 12. put in the DTC and load that 13. fuel up (if necessary) 14. setup DL and IFF 15. switch off brake and flip flaps down. 16. go, you're ready. or you know, like connect the oxygen lines to your suit and mask... I can usually get up in running in like a minute and a half, I think that's optimized, but if anyone has anything faster, lmk

I use terminal settings, mostly just the imp az to tell it what direction to hit from, good for getting engines of tanks, or avoiding mountains. I don't use the dive angle, because it never works.

http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-PLA-GBU.html re: LS-6-50 / LS-6-100 -- Not official, but sources say they could be laser guided, though that is disputed, they all do seem to have some IR / programmed image seeking ability. Photos show they don't have the large wings of the 500, so laser guided or image homing seems like that's what they could be doing, since they would have to be released at closer range. I'm assuming the images would have to be programmed on the ground if there's no cable, of course, datalink is a possibility (if its designed as an equivalent to the GBU/39B it would have a two way datalink with terminal IIR seeker), as is pre-planned.

sure did. If you drop bombs and they hit, it helps to turn off the laser by pushing the mfd button, so it can cool off quicker.
