Don't forget the impact this will have on your electric bill, it can add up fast.
  2. It's moving pretty fast so acquiring and launching on it in time would be difficult for a human. I could see what amounts to a point defense system being created for HVTs like tankers and AWACS though. That reminds me of a thought I had the other day... I assume the large missiles launched by the S-400 system are not stealthy at all and could be easily acquired by most airborne radar. Could they be downed by an AMRAAM?
  3. That sounds like an issue with the potentiometer being old/worn/dirty.
  4. >an attacker with physical access If someone can put their hands on your stuff, all bets are off.
  5. It was released out of sequence as KB4056897, or as part of the monthly rollup KB4056894.
  6. If it's a ramjet it must have fold-out intakes because it looks like a pretty smooth cylinder in the photos I saw.
  7. Do you have the monitor set to 144hz in windows' monitor settings? It's kind of buried in Win10.
  8. Interesting, the Chinese VLRAAM is super long but the diameter is pretty much the same as an AIM-120 (at least it looks like it from the article I found), which would barely incur any aero penalty compared to something the shape of an AIM-54.
  9. Yeah they're pretty heavy, weighs about as much as three AIM-120s. Still nice to have the option though. Imagine a B-1R stuffed full of them. Airborne SAM site.
  10. We've got Mirages and Harriers... Falklands war?
  11. eGPUs are almost ready for prime time. You can get a reasonable laptop and hook it to a real video card via Thunderbolt 3 when you're at home. There are still bugs but the future of this tech will only improve. https://www.computershopper.com/feature/2017-guide-the-best-external-graphics-card-boxes-egpus
  12. Some people have very limited budgets, might be running on a hand me down computer or trash-built one for all we know, especially if they are in a non-US market with ridiculous import duties on PC hardware.
  13. Imagine the capabilities of an upgraded missile the size of an AIM-54 though... the bigger body leaves a lot more room for fuel, and it can house a larger radar antenna.
  14. Interesting. I wonder how it will compare to the Meteor. The existing weapons bays on the F-22 and F-35 impose some design constraints, but I believe the meteor is designed to worth with them, or will at least work by luck since it was designed to snug into the underside cutouts on a Typhoon.
  15. By rendering the area outside the fovea in less detail you are able to boost the frame rate of the overall scene substantially with higher detail visible in the foveal area, which is the only part your brain really cares about.
  16. What aircraft do you intend to fly? The problem with all of these options is that none of them have enough hat switches on the stick to mimic the pitch, CMS, DMS, and TMS switches so if you are doing a modern aircraft you have to mess around with submodes and/or shifting.
  17. Don't forget the F-14 use during the Iran-Iraq war. This doesn't have numbers on total weapons fired but they scored a bunch of AIM-54 kills: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Iranian_aerial_victories_during_the_Iran%E2%80%93Iraq_war Pretty good article about them from Air&Space below as well. One interesting point is that just lighting up Migs with the radar was enough to get them to bug out since they knew they were screwed if an AIM-54 were sent their way. https://www.airspacemag.com/military-aviation/persian-cats-9242012/?no-ist=&page=2 I'm surprised/disappointed that we don't have a current missile in US inventory with such ridiculous range.
  18. You can also go to search and look for threads containing your own posts, and see if they are updated. As for 3DOF being worth it, if you're on a budget and it's the difference between 3DOF and zero DOF, then it's absolutely worth it.
  19. The 8700k is the fastest single-threaded CPU you can get right now, what would you upgrade to?
  20. They are also making optane drives large enough to use as primary storage, but require a regular PCI slot: https://www.anandtech.com/show/11953/the-intel-optane-ssd-900p-review
  21. Interesting, I didn't know that real ones did such things.
  22. Not sure how that would work... the reason those maneuvers work is that the missile has to pull lead pursuit to be able to reasonably get to the target. If the missile is running pure pursuit or lag pursuit it would expend less energy on corrections, but the trade off is using much more energy on the way to the target and taking way longer to get there. I guess you can always add more energy to the missile design... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteor_(missile)
  23. Part of that is because the whole thing flickers as it is being redrawn on every cycle, even when there are no changes. LCD screens don't flicker or change at all except for the pixels that change frame to frame.
  24. Cyrix... that is a name I have not heard in a long time. Also, AMD users beware: there is a bug with the MS patch... https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/09/microsoft-halts-meltdown-spectre-amd-patches/
  25. Interesting. I just built a new rig with a 1080ti, what's a good thing to mine with that? I was mining LTC and Doge a few years ago with R9 290s but the scrypt coins got killed by ASICs.
