last win10 update possibly sucked 10% perf
Gearbox replied to toutenglisse's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
This a meltdown and/or spectre patch or something else? Those have significant performance penalties for certain things. https://meltdownattack.com/ -
That's true, but the Rift does cover the majority of the part of your view that you can focus both eyes onto. You can't actually slew your eyeballs so far that you can focus them into the peripheral area and see fine detail. You can detect movement and see that there is "something" there, but not much else.

Improved simulation of reality does bring some of the problems of actual reality. You can't spin your head like Linda Blair via TrackIR.

Yes, the little plate they give you has the holes in the right spots, but they didn't countersink the screw holes and I'm worried that they might stick up too far and touch the insides of the base and damage the board. I think it needs to be spaced away from the plate with some washers. The plate seems a little thin to try to counter-sink the holes, it would be easy to remove too much material.

I just got one of these myself and I'm still trying to get iRacing to work properly, but while trying to get the traction loss thingy to behave correctly I discovered this: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/aerofly-fs-2-plugin.9096/page-7 Basically when you roll the plane, you want the seat to lean to simulate the rolling sensation itself, then it slowly returns to center when you aren't rolling so that your G vector is straight down where it belongs and the seat is ready to roll again the next time you mess with the stick.

2.5.0.15365 Update is really good !
Gearbox replied to DaveRindner's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I don't think this is true, mining on a GPU that you bought for the specific purpose of mining on will never reach ROI at current rates. Edit: According to Nicehash's calculator, you can make about $71 USD per month with a 1080ti if your electricity is free. So a $800 (good luck finding at that price) takes almost a year to pay for itself, assuming your share of the global hash pool doesn't decrease, which of course it will. -
Hahah it's like the fight sim version of DE_Rats

How does a partially-full set of CFTs influence handling compared to a set of drop tanks that you could punch off? I assume not very well.

There's been a bunch of talk on here about using MFAA (can be enabled from the nvidia control panel) vs MSAA but I haven't personally tried it yet. This fact drives me nuts, VR is a perfect use case for dual GPU since you should be able to use one card per eye very easily vs the issue of drawing alternating frames, alternating scan lines, checkerboard, etc and keeping the contents of the two cards in sync all the time.

Eh, if the cost to mine is more than the sell price you're better off just buying some if you're hoping it will go up. At least it's still winter so the heat is useful to keep the house warm.

2.5 Settings Comparisons and GPU Impact
Gearbox replied to Sideslip's topic in Game Performance Bugs
This article is more about the pixel density of a physical display as it relates to the human eye. The setting in game is just another name for supersampling, which is to say that the game renders at a larger resolution than what the screen can display and then scales it down, adding an effect similar to anti-aliasing. -
Save the track and watch afterwards to figure out what happened?

Solving the starving children problem by just giving them food is impossible. All it does it generate twice as many starving children in the future. We could steer the entire GDP of the world to this purpose and it would only make the problem worse, and more quickly.

They haven't made a Mac with a PCI slot since 2012. I guess you could do eGPU with a thunderbolt enclosure.

A couple comments: You need an additional cooler for that processor, the K models don't come with a stock heat sink anymore, I assume to save money because they expect you to OC it and use a fancy aftermarket one. 8GB is not enough for a modern computer for any purpose IMO, and we have been seeing reports of DCS 2.5 using a lot of RAM. Optical drive: I bet you have an old PC you can pull it from. Power supply: a fancy one could save you money in the long run if you live in an area with expensive power. Breakdown of the math here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/327742-28-80plus-bronze-silver-gold-platinum Monitors are a tradeoff. For business desktop work I always recommend nice IPS panel monitors that are 60Hz and have excellent color fidelity at all angles. For gaming you will often see ghosting on these though because of the high pixel transition time. Gaming monitors generally use TN panels and have much faster pixel transition times even if they are only capable of 60Hz, but have lower total color gamut and can look bad at high angles (though this has improved a lot in the last few years). Most gaming monitors can do 120 or even 144Hz now though, and the difference is definitely noticeable. Monitors are also very durable and become obsolete more slowly than other components, so spending a little extra is justified. As I type this at my office I'm using a Samsung IPS monitor that I bought in 2006 that still looks fantastic.

Did it do this rate for more than a few minutes? I assume it was mining some unusual altcoin that had a momentary value spike? What's your typical daily haul with awesome miner had how do you have it configured? I've been using nicehash because I'm lazy and it's netting around .00065 btc/day with a stock 1080ti and a mildly OC 8700K.
-
That's going to be a tall order because GPU prices are so high and availability is so constrained. Any 1080ti that's in stock is over $1000 by itself. Newegg has this special with a 1080ti and a decent looking mobo though, but I don't know if they have that in Europe: https://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?cm_sp=Homepage_SS-_-P4_3745104-_-02042018&Index=4 Is your iMac one of the models that you can use as a monitor via displayport or are you going to need to buy a monitor too? Or you could sell it and buy a monitor I guess.
-
If you're starting from scratch you should strongly consider the 8700K over the 7700K. The price difference isn't huge, you're getting the latest generation hardware, and it can OC a little higher. The two extra cores will likely come in handy later when Vulkan API happens, and could also be useful for running accessory software like HELIOS and voice attack.

Mind your electricity bill... hypothetical numbers here: (200 watts * 24 hours/day) / 1000 = 4.8 kw/h per day $0.25 kw/h $1.2 in electric bill Adjust your numbers as appropriate.

You only lose money if you sell. Hold on until it goes up again and you'll be fine.
