During my service as a groundcrew in the RNoAF, Alert-recovery was actually more fun than alert-launches. Why? Because you have an AWFUL lot to do in very little time in order to get the jet readied for another launch. 15 minutes from shutdown isn't very much, even though the pilot aligns the INS before the jet shuts down. You get what you can done before shutdown, and stand ready to dive into the intake the second the engine stops rotating, hoping to get in before the fueltruck and/or weaponscrew arrives. The Vipers are launched pretty much like the Eagle is, although you only have one engine to start. From what I remember, the startup-procedure is somewhat shorter, though.

I! AM! WEASEL!!! (YGBSM)

This. Even though I know much about the history of the sign, I fear that it has been tainted for all eternity.
-
Amen to that! Been far too long since I've had to crawl on/under/inside one, and would love to have one in DCS at A10C-level of fidelity!
-
I've kept an eye on it for a while, but I lost interest after the LRM/SRM-nerfs. Right now it feels more like a Battlefield/CoD-game than anything else, so meh, don't really care. Same with World of Tanks, really. My Ferdinand is rotting away in the garage. Got UTTERLY tired of getting flamed for camping in a bush waiting for something to show up, and trying to explain to people that you simply don't take a slow-moving, slow-turning hunk of metal out into the playfield of something nimble and fast.

DCS F-16 FM-AFM Development - Design and Video
Fjordmonkey replied to WRAITH's topic in DCS Wishlist
Well, trust me, there's plenty in even the F16A-MLU's we fly here in Norway that are classified, even though those birds are 30+ years old now. During my time as a groundcrew in the RNoAF, we learned things about certain systems on the Viper that we're not allowed to talk about, even though they may or may not be common knowledge. That being said, if there ever WAS a full-blown F16 for DCS:World with full fidelity, I'd hit the buy-button so hard and so fast that my keyboard AND creditcard will scream in agony! -
Your answers make more sense than the OP's question :P Not sure if the static discharge rods on the aircraft would help against an EMP, but that's another discussion, and one I don't know enough about to engage in :)
-
Let's take this idea and run with it, shall we? Let's say you produce a missile equipped with an EMP-warhead. For those that don't know what an EMP does, it's basically a high-energy electromagnetic pulse that will fry any unprotected electronic components caught in its field. Let's say you fire this missile at...oh, an A10. You'll kill off anything driven by electronic systems, including the engine management components, but the pilot should still be able to fly the thing due to its hydraulics still being up. Theoretically, he should be able to land (if he survives the EMP, as EMP's can have nasty side-effects to human nervous systems, which are, in effect, electric). The same goes for things like an F5, the F4 Phantom and maybe even the F15 (Not sure on that one). You might be able to land those if you're good enough a pilot or just lucky enough. Let's say you fire such a missile at an F16 or F18, frying their electronics completely. Well, congratulations, you've just killed the pilot, just not instantly. Neither of those two jets can fly without their computer systems keeping the inherently unstabile airframes under control, so the pilot will have to egress the plane right quickly. But wait, there's a catch! What do you think drives the sequencing-system that times canopy-jettison and seat-booster initiatiors...? Yep! A Mini-computer! See where I'm going with this?

Accidentally dropping or even exposing a reactor-rod to open air actually is a pretty bad scenario in terms of contamination (remember, you're dealing with a very high-radiation source), so handling the rods like they do here actually IS a potential nuclear accident every 90 seconds. If that canister dropped and cracked, you'd have a rather bad case of contamination to deal with.

Footage from the documentary Speed and Angels, btw :) Good movie about two of the last few Tomcat-pilots that got to fly the bird before it was taken out of service.

Once upon a time I had a mind. But then art like this came along, and blew it completely away. So now I have a misfiring hunk of synapses while I'm trying to pick my jaw up from the floor. Yep, this is hilariously awesome work!
-
Holy hell that's awesome :D I'd love to see her interpretation of the RNoAF F16 with the tailnumber 686, in it's celebration-paint :D

Anything from close airsupport to strategic bombing-missions. Yes, of course, let's just have the aircraft sitting on the ground until they're so broken that they can't be flown. Because this WILL happen, despite steady and constant maintenance. You'll have to deal with gaskets and valves getting stuck, electronic components breaking, contaminated fluids through condensation etc. Yep, good use of an aircraft....

FSX is more important since that's guarantees them a steady income. That their principle DCS-guy has quit is a complication, the FSX-bit common business-sense.

Polkadot AMRAAM's. It's the latest in missile technology. Not only does it blow you up, it also scrambles your comms by humming on Itsy Bitsy Yellow Polkadot Bikini louder and louder the closer to you it gets :P

I never said that their PURPOSE was humanitarian aid. I said that they COULD, and DID, render such aid when able and it suited the US Government. Very different.
-
You should know the answer to this already :P Then again, I'm not really all that surprised. I mean, we're talking about the guy that called me delusional for claiming that US Carriers and carrier battle groups actually did humanitarian aid-missions, despite plenty of evidence of such things occurring.

I'm down for the DCS Hawk :D

Let me guess: Nice stealth-capabilities, not so much when it comes to service-friendliness? :D

Logitech G940 vs Windows 8.1
Fjordmonkey replied to Fjordmonkey's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Apart from this relatively minor issue, I've had about 0 issues with Windows 8. The upgrade to 8.1 is UTTER hell if you have the wrong wireless network card (you'll face a double bluescreen then reversal to 8.0 with an ASUS PCE-N53-card in your box) or if you, like me, forget to unplug USB-hubs. Especially if you run a USB soundcard or headset through it. Anyway, going to do some poking around in the system when I get home from work and see what I can find. Bound to be an error-message somewhere, heh. -
So. I've recently updated my gamebox to Win8.1 (yesyesyes, I know all about the howling about how Win8 is the devil etc. Spare me :P), but found out that my Logitech G940 suddenly don't behave properly (yes, I know the logical solution to this is to buy a Warthog, but right now the finances doesn't cover that if I want to avoid meeting a very swift, brutal death at the hands of my better half :P). First problem I found was that the Logitech Profiler no longer detects any games what so ever (DCS or others), which led me to believe that there was a problem with the Profiler itself. Uninstalled it and reinstalled: same beef. Removed ALL Logitech-software from my box (Have a G13 and a G700 mouse as well), then reinstalled the Profiler first and the software for the G13 and mouse secondly. Still no go. Tried the Logitech-boards which proved to be about as useful as a wet sock in an oilrig-fire. Tried a few other boards with much the same result. Secondly, trying to define the controls without the Profiler installed somehow makes DCS go haywire. Suddenly the left throttle controls pitch while the vertical axis on the stick suddenly controls roll AND rudder. Regardless of which axis I configure to where, the behavior still remains. Thus, I come here to see if others have had the same issue and a possible fix before I throw the sucker out the window and light it on fire :helpsmilie: Anyone?
-
Damnit, now I'm hungry again!!!
-
I can't decide if this is the most awesome or the most useless thread ever on these boards :D
-
They don't simulate them like they used to, and they never did.
